  1. Get a salary cap and steroid testing but no strikes! Bud just couldn't win.
  2. I think everyone here already understands and agrees with you on that one. If anything though, it just gives me more respect for Bud. Everyone is criticizing the guy, and he has made himself the target in order to move the game in the right direction. He didn't quite get it there, but he did a damn good job with what he had.
  3. The move to the Wild Card and Interleague play are reason enough to call him a success as a commissioner in my mind. He got the owners and players to move forward (albeit in small steps) in a sport that has been well behind the times and obsessed with irrelevant traditions.
  4. This is a little bit of vindication after reading my SI College Hoops preview cover to cover without so much as a mention of either the Warriors or Badgers.
  5. Jeter really had a heck of a year. He put up a VORP of 71.8 and actually played good enough defense to earn his gold glove for a change. He would have been a reasonable MVP pick as well. Definitely moreso than Zobrist, who had a fine year as well, but clearly below Jeter (61.0 VORP with the bat, but questionable at best defense). Texeira's numbers look similar to Zobrist's, with lower offensive production but stellar defense at his position. Flood pants, have you seen Zobrist play a lot? I ask because your comment about his questionable defense seems to go against everything I have heard and every defensive metric.
  6. Yea, the Utley snub is pretty amazing. Tom did admit that he voted for Braun because he is a homer. He also seems to have ignored position or fielding ability. He also chimed back in to respond to a comment on his blog with some slightly snide remarks. I thought he was told not to do that, or at least be professional.
  7. In fact, from all of the highlight plays I saw from Fielder I'd say he's better defensively than Pujols. Which is probably the worst possible way to judge defense.
  8. If you aren't looking for that average/replacement level player, then I think it is really dependent on what is surrounding the player in question. For example, we only need Escobar to play great defense and hit about 0.250 next year for him to help the team. Would that be the case if we didn't have Prince and Braun? If we were without those two, we may be looking for more offense from that position.
  9. NBC always does that type of stuff. Didn't they try to get each of the top Thursday night shows to guess star a character from another Thursday night show back in the day. Like one of the guys from Friends was supposed to be on Seinfeld. The Seinfeld writers thought it was so stupid that they went ahead and wrote him into the episode, but had him killed off...so of course NBC canceled the whole thing.
  10. Greinke, Halladay, Lincecum.
  11. Anyone play Assasin's Creed 2 yet? I am kicking myself for not taking advantage of the buy 2, get 1 free sale at Best Buy. I want to get Borderlands, Fifa, and that but can't really afford 3 games (not to mention I have no time to actually play them).
  12. I can't even imagine a world where the Brewers offer a pitcher $20 mil a year. Its fun to talk about, but really I think this is mostly a pipe dream.
  13. It was a joke, just like Lowe or Vazquez for McClung would be. The idea that either of them would be available for a couple of middling prospects and contracts we want to rid ourselves of is also not realistic to me.
  14. With that kind of uncertainty, I think it is perfectly reasonable for Harang and Arroyo to be brought up in this conversation. When it is a one year type of rental and the Reds don't figure to contend, I think they would take the best deal available.
  15. You really think the Reds wouldn't make a trade that would help their team out of spite?
  16. Lowe and Vasquez for Seth McClung? They might have to throw in some cash, but I think it could workout.
  17. He had a 4.42 Era in 08' and a 3.62 ERA in '09, and he averages 95 mph per fastball, and has a great slider and will only be 26 years old. I'm not sure why Bill James would project him to be .30 points worse on his ERA for next season. I understand his BABIP might go up, but I would be willing to gamble that he would be a good #2 or #3 starter for the next 2 seasons for the Brewers. His peripherals don't suggest he was as good as his ERA last year. Couple that with the fact that Leyland pitched him into the ground (as he always does with young pitchers) and I could see him being the next Fuastino Carmona. I think James suspects the same thing, or at least expects all those baserunners to catch up with him.
  18. Looper wasn't one of the worst pitchers in the majors last year...he was the worst. And nothing about his peripherals suggests he will bounce back or that it was bad luck. He was just all around horrible.
  19. You can never have enough pitching depth imo, even as mediocre as Looper was last season, he was still the most durable starter we had outside of Gallardo. The problem is that he wasn't mediocre. If he was eating up innings at anything above replacement level he would have value. Unfortunately, that was not the case.
  20. PE is 4 years experience as I am about to take it in the spring and only have a BS. Perhaps you are thinking of your SE? Did you apply to Sargent and Lundy? They are always hiring structurals. My company hired two just out of school at the beginning of summer, but isn't hiring right now. Like you, I was unemployed for quite a while and got jerked around by a few companies. Keep your head up..I eventually had my dream job fall into my lap and am much happier here than I ever was at my old job.
  21. They abused the hell out of him in the second half. I could see him becoming the next Carmona as easily as I could see him having a successful career.
  22. There is a RF available for very cheap from the North Side of Chicago...just saying.
  23. Hoffman's Fastball and HR Prevention Interesting article from fangraphs about Hoffman's fastball this last season. They had touched on this before in regards to the rise and how he was able to get so many infield popups, but this goes a little more in depth.
  24. I went to the same school with some of her kids. All really nice. I feel terrible for the family.
  25. Plus, if Cam goes somewhere else, he will be looking for a 2 year deal. It doesn't make sense for him to take a 1 year deal when he wont play unless he just wants to stick it to the Brewers.
