  1. Agreed, Looper was probably the worst starter in the majors last season. I am most worried about injuries, as it looks like we are still thin in depth. Hopefully some of the young guys will be able to step it up from the minors in the second half if a few spot starts are needed.
  2. I understand what you guys are saying and agree. We are lucky they bumped up the payroll to where it is and I wasn't trying to say I expect it to go any further. Just that I expected the 25 man to still be at $80 mil and not dip down to $70 or so because of Hall. I imagine sucking it up and eating Hall's contract for one year is a lot easier to commit to than a 3 year contract on a new player. So I think they are right in line with the last couple of years and the next few as well (with Hall's contract fitting into their plans somehow for this year). Hopefully they still have a little flexibility in case something presents itself during the season as Invader suggested.
  3. Melvin said he and Attanasio understood the financial ramifications of designating Hall for assignment. But Melvin said he now might be able to deal Hall to a team interested in picking him up without that salary. "Anytime you have to do that, it's tough," Melvin said of eating the money. "We made the decision to give Billy a multi-year contract (four years, $24 million) after he hit 35 homers (in 2006). It's not the last contract a team will have to absorb. http://www.jsonline.com/sports/brewers/53054567.html These comments make me think the team had some reserves to absorb Hall's contract on a one year basis. They are keeping their 25 man in line with past and future years though, so thank god they didn't drop it down to 72 mil. It appears that some fans are still going to complain about the team not spending more even with this risky commitment.
  4. Yea, I mistyped there. No innings should be removed, but the ones that do help his ERA were a fluke. That was the point I was trying to make. As others have said, he really just was not very good on the field, but an enjoyable guy off. He seems to have really benefited from a couple of high pressure innings in the eyes of the fanbase. I am surprised so many people think he was "good" or even "solid."
  5. RockCoCougars, my previous post discussed why I don't think he was solid for the first half of last year. If you take out those overachieving innings, he was pretty much a replacement level pitcher during his whole stint here, and he wasn't trending in the correct direction. Add in the fact that his control is his biggest weakness. The one thing the Brewers needed last year was a guy who could eat up innings and throw strikes. Seth completely failed in that regard. There just isn't room in the bullpen for a guy who is going to nibble on purpose or because of poor ability and it seems like that is the quickest way to get on your coaches badside. Sad to see him go, but it was a no brainer to me.
  6. I am not going to say Villy has been better, but the eyeball test for me on Seth says just the opposite of what you posted. He had a decent string of games before starting ERA wise (he wasn't forced BTW, he wanted to start), but it also coincided with a BABIP around .235. He was never a very successful pitcher outside of a few key innings here and there. It is also very difficult to say he has been getting better when he really only pitched 2 seasons for us, and the last one was mostly terrible. All that said, I am sad to see him go because he seemed like a likable guy.
  7. Southpaw, HighandTight, I quoted dadofandrew and was addressing him. There are ways to disagree and ways to just be a jerk. As for me being defensive, I don't think thats the case at all, but see it as the other way around with you guys wondering why people are calling you out and not letting us have a civil discussion. The discussion was quite civil and productive before you two had posted in this thread. I think your posts were valuable at first since coach clarified and expanded on some points, but at that point its time to move on and not get into some of these debate tactics. Let the man talk and post his opinion without disecting every post and trying to catch a mistake...that will drive anyone off a message board. Lets move on either way, and I am glad coach is still here to provide us updates and inside info.
  8. I think the opening day 25 man payroll will be around $80-82 mil as it has been the past 2 years. The money they owe Hall, ect is probably a write off. They probably move the money from something else they were planning to do, like upgrades to MP or draft pick signings bonuses. Hopefully at this point they still have room to add another pitcher, but I think it is going to be something like Mulder. They may have to non-tender some players like Villy as their arby numbers go up and their cost/production declines.
  9. Davis has never really approached Wolf's 1.101 WHIP of last season though Wolf also had a very low BABIP and a high %LOB. I would expect him to be around his 4.3ish average next year, and I think he is being paid that way.
  10. Braddock will be the second lefty (midseasonish), assuming he can stay healty. A bigger assumption is that he isn't being used as a starter.
  11. The figure we see Doug bring up is the 25 man roster opening day payroll, as shown on Cotts: http://mlbcontracts.blogs...1/milwaukee-brewers.html Considering the sunken costs of Hall, Riske, Looper, and Weathers, I don't know if we are going to open the year at $80 mil. A lot of the moves so far seem to be financially motivated. If Doug can find some pitching for cheap, I think he will go for it. If they are up around $80, and have another loosing year I wouldn't want to see them trading away players like some teams are doing this offseason to get cheaper. But nobody really knows all their finances, so here is to hoping they can get as much production out on the field as possible.
  12. Dadofandrew has always had sort of a condescending tone to his posts, but that was a new high, or low I supose.
  13. Isn't a cut fastball easy on the shoulder? I suspect that it was the increased workload that got him. It seems like sometimes it is just bad luck also.
  14. The issue with Rivera is that his bat really isn't that great and his defense just seems to be average from what we've seen. If they can save half a million or so by having Lucroy or someone back up Zaun, they should go that route. Bringing up Lucroy and burning a year of service time to save half a mil this year is a terrible terrible idea. Save half a mil this year, and pay for it 4-5 years from now, or halt his development entirely. I say keep Rivera as the backup, see how the kids are doing in AAA, and you can always dump him if Salome or Lucroy are ready to come up and be broken in with Zaun.
  15. It really is easy to be a jerk when you can just do it over the internet and not to someone's face. Yea, 140 is a bit much, but with the way the Brewers seem to like running one guy out there, its not unheard of for Zaun to be on pace for around 130 starts if Rivera is the backup. If the kids are struggling and don't get called up at all, he may very well finish the year in that roll.
  16. If anything, Group D has to be considered the Group of Death at this point. Germany, Australia, Serbia, and Ghana...that could be interesting.
  17. Pitching a high amount out of the bullpen is probably even more stressful on a young arm than being a starter with a regular rotation.
  18. I would put them both at AAA trading off behind the plate and at 1B or DH if possible, then cut Rivera and bring up the one who is performing better when they wont use up a year of service time. Groom that player to be the starter next year, and trade the other. Hopefully they both tear up AAA.
  19. The time of the games is great too. The first one on a Saturday and the second on a Friday. I will probably take off early on Friday to get the second one in, then take a real day off for the third game. Last time I tried to TIVO them (I assume South Africa is in the same timezone or 1 off from Germany so 7 hrs different?) while at work, but of course I always found out the score before I could get home.
  20. Geez, come on. I think we need to cool off here. There's just no reason I can imagine for Coach to come here & essentially lie, which is what the accusations seem to be at this point. Its pretty much a non issue to me and wish it would be that way to others since its pretty much just a couple of new posters clashing with coach. They don't in any way represent the board. I hope coach can look past them and keep providing us with valuable insight. If someone doesn't like what he posts or think its too bias to get anything out of it, they can just stay out of this thread. You don't need to prove yourself to other posters by questioning someone like coach.
  21. Wow, do I not want to follow Robert on this one. This is my list as of right now in no particular order. It will probably change in 10 minutes though. Stuff I haven't seen on here so far is in bold. The Departed The Prestige Gladiator Kingdom of Heaven Hotel Rwanda Snatch American Psycho The Incredibles The 40 Year Old Virgin Children Of Men
  22. And yet Craig Counsell has routinely carried an OBP significantly higher than his BA. As rluz said, this is the exception and not the rule. One or two examples don't change the facts.
  23. Rough loss. The Warriors just looked gassed down the stretch. It could be a long season in the big east with such a short bench. Hopefully when all of Buzz's recruits get here we will be a little more deep in the coming years.
  24. They look damn good against FL St. Buzz has these guys playing great, especially on defense. I can't even imagine if they actually had some size.
  25. Chickinbrickin, batting average isn't the best way to judge a leadoff hitter, OBP is. His OBP will be too low in the next two years for him to be anywhere near the top of the lineup. I suspect that his OBP will creep up as his power does. No pitcher is going to walk a guy who can't hit for extra bases.
