  1. I agree with everyone who has said to make sure to have some fun. Yes, studying is important, but as an engineer I saw many people who burned out from studying non stop and not having any fun. And for those that didn't burn out but still had no social life...when getting out in the real world they are actually not as successful as those of us who were out at the bars having a few after class. Most companies can tell if you have no social skills in an interview. Remember, having a life and learning how to socialize outside of highschool clikes is just as important as your classroom education. To tell incoming freshman otherwise is just as irresponsible as telling them to go to every kegger and skip class. Find a happy medium, and you will be set!
  2. If you are worried that you wont have anyone to hang out with when you get there, just remember that everyone else is feeling that way too. Sure, some people will have a social group built in if they are from a nearby highschool, but there will be countless people on your floor who know nobody else when they arrive. You wont be alone for anything your first week, as you will probably end up going everywhere with a group of 5-10 people. Leave your door open and you will make lots of friends. The one exception is if you are on the end of your floor. If that is the case, walk down the hall and meet people. If you want go get food, head down the hall a few min before most people will go and see when people are going, otherwise a group may go and forget about you. That happend to a girl on my floor my freshman year (I found out the next year when I became good friends with her). She thought my group on the other end of the hall near the elevator was very clicke, but really we would just leave to do stuff and not walk down to her end. The great thing about college though, especially at the beginning, is that anybody can be friends with anybody (except the jocks and nerds of course).
  3. I put my info into Lendingtree.com at lunch and already have an offer for 5% 30 year no points with closing costs of $2138. He said the out of pocket closing cost expense would be only $470, so does that mean the rest would get put into the loan? On another note, I think this is probably an obvious answer, but I currently have about $4500 in my escrow account with Countrywide. I am assuming if I refinance, they will just cut me a check of that money they are holding, correct? Then I would just hold on to this for when my property taxes come due this summer.
  4. I don't think that rate is too hard to come by, but it just isn't worth it for those closing costs. I guess my real question is, would there be a disadvantage to refinancing with another company? And that quote did involve points, but I am sorry to say I am not quite sure what that means. I need to talk to my dad as he has his brokers license and usually helps me out with stuff like this. Thanks for the advise everyone.
  5. I just called Countrywide (now Bank of America) to see about possibly refinancing my 30 yr fixed 6.25% mortgage. They said I could refinance to 4.75% (APR 4.9%) which would end up lowering my monthly payment by $130. Obviously very good news. The bad part is that the refinancing fee would be $4,300. This seems excessive to me, as I think my original fees were around $1,500 when I first set up the loan. Does anyone have any suggestions or agree one way or another? This is all fairly confusing to me, but I am thinking I should at least look at what other options are out there. Or would it be even more expensive to go with another lender who would have to start a loan from scratch? I think my best bet would be to enter my info into Lendingtree.com like I did two years ago when I bought my condo. Thanks for any advise.
  6. I agree that Phillips is a boob and this is just another example. I do think that a case could be made for the opposing pitcher getting a little more hyped up to pitch against Santana. I know a true professional would play the same every start, but it is possible they get a little more zeroed in and pitch with less margin of error when their going against a premier pitcher.
  7. Brently is a tool, and the cheap shots were unnecessary sour grapes for sure. In terms of Milwaukee vs. Chicago for nightlife and other attractions, its not really that close. MKE has gotten a lot better with the new bars/clubs on 3rd street and the 3rd ward, but through most of my college years at MU my partying was on a very set routine and it was the same group of people day in and day out at the same bars. Chicago is totally different. In the two years I have lived in the city (live in Evanston, currently working on South Wacker) I have yet to run into the same group of people (except when its on purpose and I go to a Badger or Packer bar for games). And if you stay out of Wrigleyville (or know where to go when there) the d-bag infestations are actually not too bad. In terms of being out late, in Chicago many bars stay open until 4, so you can pretty much stay out the whole night. In MKE after 2:30 your pretty much limited to eating cheese at Mikano's or Oakland Gyros as Brently was ineptly joking about.
  8. I am 5'11" and he was shorter than me in spikes on concrete when I met him in Beloit. I would guess he is 5'9."
  9. Not a Wilco fan, but sweet cover. I was living in NY when Citizen King got big around the turn of the century, and it was definitely not just a Milwaukee thing. As for album covers that incorporate Milwaukee didn't Mase have a cover a while back where he was sporting a new Brewers hat? That should count for something.
  10. 90% of these choices could be made by my 8 year old son though, it doesn't really add strategy to PH counsell vs a RH pitcher. A tiny bit of strategy goes into Counsell or Duffy or Nelson but it is a tiny small little bit. Tell that to Ned Yost, John Russell, or Bob Brenly. The NL has a lot more strategy and I personally hate the DH rule.
  11. The Mickey's 40 was a very central part of the tailgate experience through my college years. Now I like to treat myself to High Life or some New Glarus.
  12. If you don't have an HDTV, why not get a Wii. They work 100% of the time, are cheaper, have great games, and the only downside is negated by your TV. I am not trying to come down too hard on the 360, its just that everyone I know who has it complains about it all the time. I just don't get it, although I don't particuarly like 1st person shooters so I am fine with the ps3 game library.
  13. He needs to go out on the town and find a slump buster.
  14. Might I suggest a PS3. Sure it may be more expensive initially, but in the long run its much cheaper since you wont have to keep getting new ones or send them in to be fixed. Plus you then have a blue ray player.
  15. Way to dedicate a month to Mexican food when an epidemic is currently headed our way from that country. That being said, I had Chipotle last night for dinner and am considering going back again tonight.
  16. The Royal Red Robin burger with BBQ sauce substituted for the mayo is the best I have had outside of MKE (Sobelman's). It has cheese, an egg, and bacon on it...just awesome.
  17. I would suggest a nice leasurly walking tour of East St. Louis...preferably at night.
  18. Braun has been saying for a while now that his timing has been off. He has critisized himself in the past and did so again here several times along with the rest of the team. Then he called out the pitchers when asked specifically about it. These are the exact answers I want to hear in this situation. Well done Braun.
  19. I loved what I have seen so far. I cracked up at the part of him in the school's showers drinking a beer and having that ridiculous tan line. I also liked his comment about New York and what he thought of San Fransisco. Very Rockerish. By request I made a Yo shirt featuring said slogan which isn't really appropriate for this board. http://www.theshirtalert.com/page/wisconsin
  20. I know a couple of people who are very good friends with the Melvins. They all have nothing but nice things to say about both of them, and I know from first hand experience they are very accessible and friendly to the public. This is in stark contrast to some of the execs and managers from the larger markets who I always hear negative stories about.
  21. I would argue that Reservoir Dogs accomplished the same thing as Pulp Fiction 2 years earlier, so it should cover the Indie category. I would also say that Saving Private Ryan could be on there. Going into it, I had watched many war movies. Leaving the theater I felt as though I had witnessed war for the first time in my life. It wasn't glorified violence or over the top...it was just dramatic and gut wrenching due to the effects, acting, sound, stunts, and superb camera work. Robert can probably tell us the true origin of the "handheld camera effect," but for me Saving Private Ryan was the first time I saw it used so effectivly. It has been copied quite a bit since then in basically every Michael Mann movie and in the amaizing battle scene in Children Of Men.
  22. Just put a live ordinance gernade in the grill and attach a coat hanger to the pin and then soder it to the lid. Shouldn't take more than 1 min and will give any Cub fan a good "jolt." Also, I wouldn't put the gill near your car, find one with an IL license plate (but not a silver WRX because that could be my car and I've never stolen anything besides beer).
  23. I used to have a friend in college that did quite well selling mushrooms.
  24. Phillips has an article over on espn right now about how nobody will challege the Cubs...but if they do he outlines how the Cards and Reds may have an outside chance. I'll take the sleeper position over the favorite everytime, but there sure is some bad journalism going around. And I agree with the injury concerns. The Cubs have a lot of them, and they foolishly traded away most of their depth for unimportant parts. If several players go down, its going to be a long season for their fans.
  25. Its the whole metrosexual dbag movement. Some guys feel it helps them meet girl. Half the "fans" at a Cubs game are there specifically for that (I do have to admit there are a lot of hotties that go to the games but it seems like more of them are there to watch baseball than the guys) and they think that look will help them. I live near Wrigleyville so I see this sort of thing all the time. I could go on a huge rant about the typical Cubs fan, but I will leave it at that for now.
