  1. fwiw, Since his OPS season high of 1.045 on June 7th, Branyan is hitting .206/.300/.471. 72 Ks and 15 homers in 204 at bats. If you check his OPS game by game since then it's a long steady decline. He was Pujols the first 1/3rd of the season, and Hardy/Hall like the second 1/3rd.
  2. Last night's game pretty much did it for me too. Two games on consecutive Tuesdays that were a complete embarrassment to the organization. That happens once in a while over a long season, but when it happens twice in mid August you can figure any hope for the season is gone. Or at least the present team as constructed is going nowhere.
  3. Still hoping your source was right, Luke....
  4. The reality is they are probably "re-assigning" Castro. Look for him to appear in some capacity within the organization after the season.
  5. This makes the most sense Luke. Hardy has options left and you can bet the new team doesn't want him putting on a Brewers uniform while details are worked out. So, why should the Brewers play with only 24 tonight?
  6. I never disliked Bill Hall the way I do Kendall, but it was time to let him go. He has a better chance of resurrecting his career as a utility guy with another team. Maybe he'll end up a Wes Helms type with more versatility and better defense. Good luck to him. Hope he goes to the AL.
  7. This seems like a scapegoat by a GM who needs to blame someone so he can save his own job.
  8. That he's been traded is the only way this move makes sense. If a verbal agreement on a trade has been reached, then the other team will not want Hardy in the lineup tonight. Instead of sitting him on the bench, Doug can make the Escobar move right away. Hardy will probably soon be on a plane to somewhere for a physical and never step down in AAA.
  9. I was embarrassingly optimistic. For the first two months I looked like a genius!
  10. What good pitcher was available last winter for a one year, $10 million deal? For the most part, the good ones signed long term deals. I suppose you can point to Randy Wolf who signed a one year/$5 million deal, but Cam's contract hardly prevented a deal like that. But it didn't take $10 million and a one year commitment to sign Derek Lowe, it took $60 million and 4 years. I'm not sure that's a deal I want Doug making.
  11. I'm worried he'll be shut down for the season after a rehab start or two. I just hope he doesn't need TJ surgery...
  12. Probably the period of greatest competitive balance in MLB was from the start of free agency until the 1994 strike. Was there competitive balance before free agency? Haven't the Yankees always dominated the American League? Wasn't the NL dominated by the Dodgers and Cardinals (and Giants to a lesser extent) from the 20's through the 70's?
  13. Salary caps punish talent. I think revenue sharing is the more honest way toward competitive balance. It's in the best long term interests of the game to seek competitive balance. Therefore, it should be the teams that make the financial commitment through revenue sharing, instead of forcing players to take pay cuts through a cap. MLB should own all the local cable networks that broadcast major league games. The revenue from these networks could be evenly distributed among all teams.
  14. I don't think it takes a miracle to make up 6 games, just a sustained hot streak. That said, I don't see this team as having what it takes for any kind of hot streak. If the rotation woes continue the hitters will mail in the rest of the season.
  15. I think they are playing for 85 wins and trying to salvage respectability. They've played a little better the last 10 games or so, but don't seem to have an offense that is capable of overcoming the poor pitching. A team that runs off an 8-2 streak or extended winning streak has to have a couple "miracle" games where they pile on runs late and come from behind. This offense can't do that. They get shutout every 5th game or so, score 4-5 runs in the other games and hope that's enough. It might have been had the original rotation stayed together and pitched to their career norms, but it's not enough now. There's still a couple weeks to get back into it, but there's little room for error. Each loss makes it less likely. (Obviously)
  16. I like it and hope they pick up his option even though it's a bit steep. 2010 bullpen becomes McClung, Villy, Weathers, Coffey, DiFelice, Stetter, and Riske. Or Villy moves back to the rotation and they are able to sign Hoffman.
  17. Good. Then Braun can storm the castle after the game too. That way opposing teams will be scared to throw at the two most important players on the team. When Torre and LaRussa order a hit, they always want to injure the player. This has to stop. If MLB isn't going to do anything about it, then it's up to the players and teams to take the law into their own hands.
  18. You have to like his 80% base stealing rate two years running. I was suspicious of him going into this season, but I'm satisfied now. I want him leading off. Gamel or McGehee batting 2nd, Rickie batting 5th. I'm done with Hardy. I doubt he's a .230 hitter going forward, but the Brewers can't keep everyone and they have a replacement for him. Doug should be able to get one or two solid pitching prospects for him.
  19. Hardy for Harang is a trade I could support. Too bad it didn't happen.
  20. I would think every legislator outside of the 4 county area will oppose this. It's a tax increase for their constituents who, haven't paid a dime for Miller Park's construction.
  21. Wow, that's about all we need to know, isn't it? Thanks for that.
  22. I'm ready to blame Kendall for everything.....
  23. Since the Brewers are 6th in OBP in the league that would make them one of the more consistent offenses in the league! First off, I think every fan feels his team's offense is inconsistent. And it does seem as though OBP is a very important ingredient. But OBP with poor slugging might make for a consistent offense, but also one that is consistently middling. I wonder if this isn't an area where batting average does matter. I've always hated that term, Professional Hitter, but I think I'm begining to understand what it means. McGehee may be a professional hitter, a guy that can put the ball into play and advance runners. We were reminded last night that Loretta is a professional hitter. I lambast batting average as much as the next guy, but I suspect a team that hits .280 with a .350 OBP scores more runs than one that hits .250/.350. In the end you need balance. You need hitters who can spray singles around the field, sluggers who drive the ball, and team OBP better than league average . When the bottom half of the lineup struggles to hit .230, you will never have a consistent offense, even if those guys take their walks and have a decent amount of power.
