  1. Axford has made $25M in his career. I don't think he's just out there looking for a paycheck.
  2. Houser's going to need a lot of first-pitch outs to make it happen, but given the bullpen situation I think he'll get every opportunity. I just hope that when they take him out they don't take him out between innings. Let him walk off the mound.
  3. Tell that to Daniel Bard or Caleb Thielbar. And it's the Pirates - with the exception of 2-3 guys, it's a AAA team. Or Eric Yardley, or Hoby Milner, or Angel Perdomo, who were literally the only in-house options available.
  4. No, it wasn't dumb. He got hurt which caused him to pitch poorly and that can happen to anyone. Look what he was doing in AAA before they acquired him. They scouted him. And what other options did they have?
  5. I hope Ax doesn't pitch in the 9th unless we have a 4-5+ run lead. Ask and ye shall receive
  6. if you're placed on the injured list as a close contact, it's because you are not fully vaccinated. fully vaccinated players who test negative cannot be placed on the injured list for close contact. Just to clarify, Hader tested positive so he may or may not be vaccinated.
  7. On July 10th, there were 127 deaths and the 7-day moving average of deaths was 170. On July 30th - 20 days later - the 7-day moving average was 308 with 451 deaths reported that day. 1) Are you telling me that those 451 people are nothing to care about? What if one of them was one of your loved ones? 451 per day is over 160k per year, 4x the number of people in the US who die in vehicle accidents (how's that for context?). 160k deaths per year is nothing to be concerned about? That's not "surging"? B) What about the people who are immunocompromised, such as those undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant patients, and other immuno-compromising conditions for whom the vaccines aren't as effective? Are you telling me those people are nothing to care about? Yeah, it's a lot less deaths than back in December/January. But it's a lot more than it should be, and there are a lot of people who, despite being vaccinated, are still at risk and can do nothing about it.
  8. Cubs fans are dumping their tickets faster than their team dumped their players at the trade deadline. I know there's a bunch of Chicago-area BF.netters (plus Southern WI). Let's do what Cubs fans have done to Miller Park. Mon 8/9, Tue 8/10, and Wed 8/11 are night games and Thu 8/12 is a day game. Right now tickets for Mon/Tues start at $10, Wed at $11, and Thu at $13. Pre-game at Will's Northwoods Inn (because it's the biggest Wisconsin bar in Chicago and there's free parking on the west side of Racine Ave and west of Racine Ave), 15 minute walk from Will's to Wrigley. Who's in and what day? I'm definitely going one of Mon/Tues/Wed, maybe more if some of you bozos can talk me into it.
  9. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/covid-data/covidview/index.html Interpretive Summary for July 30, 2021 COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and deaths are once again increasing in nearly all states, fueled by the B.1.617.2 (Delta) variant, which is much more contagious than past versions of the virus. Now, about that $10K...
  10. This, this, and this. I distinctly recall the CDC saying when they relaxed the mask guidelines that they essentially reserved the right to reverse that if cases start rising again.
  11. Hader gets 7/8/9 in the order. Just have to not walk any of them (or give up any HRs).
  12. Yeah, I won’t mind when they don’t have to face him anymore. For as poor of an overall season as he’s had, he certainly seems to have the Brewers number. 1.202 OPS vs. MIL this year, next highest is .889 vs. PIT.
  13. He didn't walk the guy to get him on base. He got a ground ball, but it found a hole in the defense.
  14. How do you guys know what offers they had? By not trading him they can negotiate with him at any time to extend his contract without any competing offers. Puts pressure on Story to make a decision and choose a bird-in-hand versus an unknown of what he will get as a FA. Also, what are the chances that Story gets a contract worth more than a QO after this past season with a .655 road OPS (and career sub-.750 road OPS)? I think there's a decent chance that Story accepts the QO to try to redeem his value; if he does, the Rockies can trade him next deadline. I don't think this is a horrible move by the Rockies, and I think some of you are over-valuing him. For a guy with a sub-.750 career OPS away from Coors field and coming off of a season where so far he has a .655 OPS away from Coors field, I don't see him getting an AAV worth more than the 2021 QO of $18.9M. At least, if I were a GM I wouldn't give him that kind of an AAV and I wouldn't have given up the equivalent of a first round pick for two months of him even if the Rockies paid most of his salary.
