  1. Tough catch having to dodge his own player undercutting him.
  2. Lazard's inexperience showed on the deep ball - all he had to do was stop and jump and he would have drawn the pass interference. Can't take sacks when you have over five seconds to throw.
  3. My god no. Please no more challenges with vague wording so that you can disregard making a change when you are wrong but almost not wrong. Let the machine call every pitch. If you do that and have a few challenges for plays around the diamond, they should be about as good as we can get. In behavioral psychology it's called "escalation of commitment" - it's easier to get people to commit to smaller steps one at a time than it is one big step. By taking a smaller step first - still giving umpires control while having the technology to change the bad calls in critical situations - it's easier to get commitment to the steps. People can get used to the technology in a smaller role while they work the kinks out; then once people are comfortable with the smaller step and the kinks get worked out, take a bigger step.
  4. Keuchel would be the Cubs 4th or 5th best SP, so no? The Cubs also probably have 5 of the top 6 or 7 position players between the teams, including the best in Bryant. The pitching floor seems much safer too. I don’t see it unless all this young pitching comes together that’s been hurt or under performed to date. With Hamels gone, I don't even know who the Cubs 5th starter is. Chatwood? Jharel Cotton? Darvish is fragile, will be 33 next year, and led the league in HR's given up last year. Lester will be 36 and has had a FIP >4.00 each of the last three years. Right now Giolito is the best pitcher on either team, I'd put Keuchel on par with Quintana, then you have Hendricks/Lester/?? versus Kopesch/Cease/Gonzalez/Rodon. Moncada had an OPS equal to Bryant last year, Anderson had a higher OPS than Baez, and Jimenez is the best OF on either team (keep in mind he was only 22 last year and could easily get better). Then add Grandal, and I think it's a lot closer than you think.
  5. My hope was that they would adopt a system similar to tennis where the umpires make the calls, but each team gets 3 challenges that are determined by the automated system (with more challenges available if they correctly challenge all three). What will be interesting is if the strike zones are based on player height, stance, both, or set dimensions, and how much if at all strike zones will vary based on player height.

  7. I was just reminded about another reason why I did not want Sogard back. Endless stories about Saydee.

  9. OPS vs LHP: Thames: .679 (2019), .612 (2018) Smoak: .672 (2019), .688 (2018)
  10. Sounds like a raunchier version of San Francisco's Beach Blanket Babylon.
  11. Hamels is gone, and Lester and Quintana are fading.
  12. I think the whole "Thames is strictly a platoon/Smoak is serviceable vs LHP" is a bit overblown. First, Thames and Smoak had almost the exact same OPS vs. LHP last year (.679 vs .672). Second, the Brewers' main competitor next season is the Cardinals, and not only are all of their starters RHP, but all but one of their key relievers are RHP (Andrew Miller the exception, but he'll be 35 next year and has been fading the last two years). The Reds starters are all RHP and only have one key LH reliever (Garrett). Thames is a legitimate threat vs. RHP, and Braun can play 1B versus tough LHP.
  13. Both Yelich and Cain were acquired in late January. Lots of time left.
  14. Depending on size, guys can easily flip from WR to DB. Natrell Jamerson came to UW as a WR, and left as a 5th round draft pick as a defensive back and is playing in the NFL. UW has been very good at projecting guys to other positions (both Edwards, Baun, Ingold, and Biadasz was originally recruited as a DL). Just get the athletes in and figure out who can play WR and who can play DB. Devin Chandler is a little light now, but add 15 lbs and he'd be a good sized CB. Maybe he's one of those guys who can flip.
  15. Maybe I'm not following you on this, but why should Braun be getting less playing time even with his off days? He's a much better hitter than Garcia. I think this is more about Yelich - he's missed time with a bad back and is coming off of a fractured knee cap. I think Yelich is the one who will be getting more off days to take care of his back and put less stress on his knee.
  16. Is BALCO back in business? I'm not opposed to giving $4.5M to a LHH utility IF. I'm very opposed to giving it to Eric Sogard.
  17. If Barrett and Jones deserve to get in over the Smiths because they have more sacks, then the Smiths deserve to get in before Khalil Mack.
  18. Sooooo.... back to Badgers football. Early 2020 recruiting class signing period begins tomorrow. Usually the Badgers get most of their class to sign early, with a handful of them enrolling early and participating in spring practice. Biggest question marks are the two RBs, Jalen Berger and Kevonte Bradford. No RB in this class yet. With Schiano being hired at Berger's home state Rutgers, it sounds like Berger is going to wait to see who else commits to Rutgers; I think he is also waiting to see if LSU lands the #1 RB recruit Zachary Evans, as he also has an offer from LSU. They already have a big LB class, but it sounds like it's a two-horse race for Kaden Johnson between UW and Nebraska. Scott Frost must be a really good salesman. To quote their defensive coordinator from last off-season, they're a 5-7 team until they prove otherwise. Rumors from some coaches' tweets suggest two recruits added to the class tomorrow. Kaden Johnson is signing at 7:45am, and some of the recruiting gurus switched their crystal balls to UW today. Adding Johnson and one of the RBs will make it one of their best classes ever in terms of rankings.
  19. Been meaning to ask this for a while - is your shift key broken? I find it hilarious that you have the acute accent over the "i"'s, but no capitalization.
  20. My concerns exactly, and why, IMO, it was an overpay.
  21. Just ignore him. He's been doing this for years.
  22. Well, I'd rather the Brewers did this than the Garcia deal. Maybe Miley is a little miffed that Stearns didn't give him the money he was looking for after 2018.
  23. Not sure if this is the reason, but Gio struggled to go deep into games. Only once completed six innings (that being said, it was against the Cubs).
  24. Why do people want to send Braun to the bench or a platoon role? He had a .849 OPS last year and played in 144 games. Garcia has had an OPS greater than that only once in his career.
