  1. I guarantee there is no MRI machine in the clubhouse. If the kneecap is broken they'd just need an xray. I'll bet there isn't one of those in the clubhouse either
  2. I guarantee there is no MRI machine in the clubhouse. Counsell is busy managing the game. Who else is there to talk?
  3. In August sure I agree but it's like a 50 man pen right now. With the hard contact he's giving up, the walks and his spot coming up there's no reason to keep him out there. He wasn't fooling anyone and benefited from facing a weak lineup. I just think this pen runs out of gas if they keep down this road. They have solid pieces in there but only one horse. Would have liked to see another inning or two from Anderson tonight. Having 13 in the bullpen doesn't do a lot of good when they include Nelson, Peralta, Albers, Faria. Who's really better than Anderson? Hader, Black, Suter, maybe Guerra, Pomeranz, and Claudio but not by much.
  4. When giving up 8 runs, the Marlins are 0-4. Nine runs, 0-9. Ten runs, 0-1.
  5. Yeah, it would be one thing if it was a good lefty. But Wei-Yin Chen is not that, and hasn't been for two years.
  6. Pomeranz has pitched the last two games, but only 12 pitches total, so he should be good to go. Guessing Guerra and Black the next two. Claudio only 10 pitches yesterday, didn't pitch the game before, so he's probably in the mix too.
  7. Marlins 6-10 when allowing four runs. 1-16 when allowing five runs. 5-11 when allowing six runs. Good reason for going for an extra run by pinch hitting Braun instead of Thames facing a lefty.
  8. Atlanta up 7-1 over Philly. Mets up 3-1 over Arizona. Might get some help tonight.
  9. [sarcasm]He was fired for the Tyler Thornburg trade.[/sarcasm] They'll lose Porcello ($21M), Cashner (prorated portion of $9.5M), Nunez ($5M), Pearce ($6.25M) and Owings ($3M). Moreland ($6.5M) and Holt ($3.8M) are also free agents, and Sandoval's buyout decreases by $13M. So at most about $68M comes off the books. But Sale's contract doubles ($15M more), Bogarts adds $8M, Betts will add probably another $5M-$7M (they'll likely find a way to backload a deal), Bradley another $2M-$4M, Eduardo Rodriguez another $6-$8M, and Benitendi another $8M-$10M. So that might be another $50M or so that they'll have to spend to keep the core of the team together. Wouldn't be surprised if they have to trade some of that young talent (Beninendi, Bradley) for pitching or prospects or to get out from some bad contracts.
  10. If the Cubs had this many injuries to their pitching staff they would be nowhere near a playoff spot. The Cubs only needed to have nine starts covered by pitchers outside of their opening day rotation. If they had to go 8-9 deep they would be in serious trouble because they had no depth. They've been incredibly lucky.
  11. I think this was planned as a "get the nerves out of the way" opportunity. Give him a little game experience so in case he is needed he isn't completely green.
  12. Belichick (and Kraft) just has to hold up a fist full of Super Bowl rings in anyone's face and say, "Let's be clear, we do things my way around here." Reminds me of a story about a famous rock band, I can't remember which one, who needed to replace a band member. The new member started making suggestions about changing some things, and the lead guitarist said, "I have two Ferrari's in my garage, let's do things my way."
  13. There are some tight sphincters in Ann Arbor right now.
  14. Last night the Cubs got at least a half a dozen weak grounders and bloopers that were hit in the only place they could have to get a hit that resulted in most of their runs. Jackson got Rizzo to do exactly what he needed him to do - hit a ground ball. It was perfectly placed right down the first base line, and maybe a better defensive 1B might have been able to get it. He also got Castellanos to hit a ground ball earlier in the inning, but it too found a hole. Either of those grounders get hit in a slightly different place and no runs score. Prior to the grand slam the Cubs got two weak infield singles, one a dribbler in front of home plate perfectly placed between Grandal and Pomeranz with two out. If either of those turns into an out, at worst only one run scores. That's six runs that scored simply by luck, not by bullpen management. You're not going to strike everyone out; it's unrealistic to expect anywhere close to that. Soft contact and weak ground balls are good outcomes that usually results in outs, and the bullpen got that. The walks hurt, but the runs scored by luck.
  15. Brewers not losing helps. Win every series and the rest will take care of itself.
  16. Strikeout on a slider... well, I'll be damned.
  17. They haven't released him yet. No team claimed him, so the Packers then had the option to put him on IR, which apparently they did.
  18. Sort of. Another team can't claim them, they have to make the player a contract offer and then the player has to accept. The player almost always accepts because it usually is a lot more money, but the player's current team can offer an increase in salary to stay - sometimes up to the active roster minimum. The Packers have successfully kept a few guys on the practice squad by bumping up their salary.
  19. Luis Contreras, who started the year in the independent United Shore League, finishes the year with an appearance in AA for Biloxi. Carlos Luna, who had never appeared above Rookie ball, finishes the year with a start in AAA. He's followed by Karsen Lindell, who started the year out of baseball and previously had never pitched above Rookie ball as well.
  20. Bolton is listed on Green Bay's IR. Not sure at this point if he cleared waivers or if they pulled him back and put him on season-ending IR. The Packers official team site lists Bolton on IR along with Malcolm Johnson, Mike Tyson, Jason Spriggs, and ESB.
  21. He's 26, but in 61.1 IP this year gave up 37 hits and struck out 94. Walks are a little high but not terrible. Career minor league K/9 of 10.9. Worth taking a flyer on.
  22. http://www.brewerfan.net/images/store/dailylinkreport.jpg Organizational scoreboard: https://www.milb.com/scores/brewers/2019-09-01 QT-C with a much better rehab outing. Not an immaculate inning, but got three outs on five pitches with a strikeout. Bickford doing what Bickford does. Missions get stymied by an old friend (who I thought was even older).
  23. How likely is it that a team is going to put in a claim on an injured UDFA? I'd say not very likely. Other than the pre-season games, there probably isn't a lot of scouting that other teams are going to have on him besides his college tape, and his college tape wasn't enough to get drafted. I don't recall any formal announcement about the severity of his injury. Last I heard, they were seeking another opinion as the first MRI(s) were not conclusive. It's possible he might need to miss the entire season anyway, in which case another team is not going to want to pay him if there's no chance he can play this year. By releasing him, another team is going to have to pay for his medical evaluation, and he probably won't pass their physical anyway.
