    In hockey they say the worst place to be is up by two goals on the road going into the 3rd period. Many a game has been blown up two on the road in the 3rd period. I imagine that isn't much different being up big after halftime on the road. Pretty easy for the momentum to swing, especially if the team up big goes into conservative offense/defense.

    I don't recall Villar playing a passable SS, and we have a better 2B in Hiura. Villar was moved to 2B for a reason. If Villar can't play SS, then what are we hand-wringing about?

    53 catchers had at least 175 PAs in 2019. Of those, Pina's .724 OPS ranked 29th. Of the 28 who finished ahead of him, only 18 had at least 300 PAs. Only 11 had at least 400 PAs. If those catchers were good both offensively and defensively, I would think they would have had more plate appearances (unless they were injured). Starting two out of every three games should get you 400 plate appearances and enough rest during the season. Few catchers did that. My opinion - Pina is an average starting major league catcher, and the Brewers can win with him if Grandal leaves (and they invest that money elsewhere)l.

    Woodruff Davies Houser Lyles Gonzalez/Nelson Using FIP as the measuring stick, the odd man out is Anderson. His salary gets allocated toward Lyles/Gonzalez. Gonzalez actually pitched better in innings 4-6 than 1-3, and the 2nd/3rd time facing a batter than the 1st; his struggles were in the 1st/2nd inning. As for Houser, digging behind the numbers a bit: 1st half: 19 G, 5 starts, 42.2 IP, 2.4 K/BB, .796 OPS-A, .346 BABIP, 1.453 WHIP 2nd half: 16 G, 13 starts, 68.2 IP, 3.89 K/BB, .656 OPS-A, .279 BABIP, 1.107 WHIP The numbers suggest that he was better in the 2nd half primarily as a starter - and better when he had a defined role as a starter - than he was primarily as a reliever in the 1st half (and bouncing back and forth between the pen and starting). Only 5 IP as a reliever in the 2nd half (with 2 ER, 1 HR given up), so the vast majority of the 2nd half numbers above were as a starter. Given that Houser is pre-arby, I think they have to roll with him so that they can invest their resources in bringing back Moose/Grandal and/or upgrading SS.

    It's one game - what are the chances they need more than 10 pitchers? Woodruff goes 2-3, then six guys to go one inning, leaving three for extra innings. They'll save Anderson and Lyles for extra innings.

    Well, depending on Bulaga's health, a RT might not be a bad idea. Or an ILB. I'd put both of those over a WR or TE.

    UW Madison stadium area bar told me they count Seltzers in their 'beer' category for record keeping purposes. Said Seltzers are 38% of 'beer sales'. Couldn't believe it when I heard, but thinking about it and it makes sense. Definition of "insight": a basic human truth that results in a change in behavior Insight: most young women don't like the taste of beer, and, regardless of generation, never have. (There's a reason why Zima was popular when I was in undergrad.) Most young women are conscious of the calories they consume. (Thus why vodka/soda has been popular for some time.) Most young women want to party and not "miss out". Alcohol + not taste like beer + relatively low calories = winner. And if you haven't tried the new Natty Light hard seltzers ("Catalina Lime Mixer" and "Aloha, Beaches" - they get an A for naming them)... they don't suck. At all.

    Not one jet sweep to keep the defense honest from crashing the line of scrimmage. Not one WR screen. Not any screen pass that I can recall.

    Amazing to think how little the Brewers gave up to get Lyles, and how big of a benefit he has provided.

    Arcia's career OPS: .650 Iglesias's career OPS: .684 IMO, if he costs a lot more than Arcia, I pass. If that's the best option, then I think it is a pretty good sign that there are not a lot of good shortstops out there. Keep in mind, the Red Sox won the World Series last year with arguably the worst offensive production at two positions - 2B and C. In baseball, the sum is greater than the parts.

    Still a tough road but not impossible. The Cubs are going to need to help us. The Cubs hate the Cardinals just as much as we do, and they would love nothing more than to ruin their season and kick them to the wild card.
