  1. There were no takers for Gerald McCoy, so it's not surprising that there were no takers for Daniels at that salary, especially coming off of injury. Daniels is no longer viewed as an every down player, more of a 3rd down inside pass rusher, and while that is valuable they have the Smiths and Gary as options to move inside next to Clark on 3rd down.
  2. My goodness, what pitch did he learn how to throw once he got to the pros? And whoever taught him that pitch, offer him a promotion here.
  3. I have a Linksys WiFi extender. It adds _ext to the router signal. When you switch between signals you do not have to re-enter any passwords on your devices. You just connect to a different WiFi signal. A bit of a hassle, but it takes three seconds to do it. The wireless mesh systems where you seamlessly move between signals, last I checked, cost $300 or so but that was about a year ago. For best results, make sure your router and WiFi extender have antennas. The more antennas, the more the signal will carry.
  4. The Reds aren't known for their bullpen. Brewers have eight more innings to prove that.
  5. Has anyone ever purchased a refurbished cell phone? Overall, I've had good luck with refurbished electronics (I'm typing this on a refurbished PC I purchased about nine years ago) and that makes sense because they usually fix the manufacturing defects. I'm considering switching to xfinity Mobile as they don't charge a line access fee and charge $12/GB of data. I rarely stream video/music, and if I do, it's almost always on WiFi - I don't think I've exceeded 1GB of data in a month in the last year. The cost of xfinity would be ~$12/mo plus phone purchase cost which is $25-30/mo because they don't discount the cost of the phone as they don't have contracts. I can't bring my current phone there (Galaxy S7 - too old) and would need to purchase one from them or bring one, but a refurbished Samsung S9 is about half the cost of what xfinity charges for a S9. Even so, it's still $300, and would hate for it to crap out after a couple of months.
  6. In 2008 Gallardo blew out his ACL (technically, some jerk on the Cubs sliding into first base blew it out) on May 1st and pitched again on September 25th.
  7. Yes, I have seen their starter/reliever splits. I've also seen Peralta throw 6 or more innings of one run ball or less eight times. I also know that it's difficult getting yanked back and forth between starting and relieving and AAA and the majors; just look at Woodruff's first two seasons. I also know that Adam Wainwright was the closer on St. Louis's 2006 World Series team, and I'll bet that they're pretty glad they didn't keep him in that role. I believe that it's a fool's errand to definitively define a guy as a starter or reliever based on less than 200 career innings.
  8. I don't want it to be Peralta for similar reasons I don't want it to be Houser. It's just too damaging to our pen where we finally seem to have things working in a positive direction. So... you want our pen to be stronger than our starting rotation? Why not the best pitchers be the ones who pitch the most innings?
  9. Nick Anderson was actually drafted by the Brewers in the 32nd round back in 2012 (didn’t sign despite being a college senior). That is the same year the Brewers took Brent Suter in the 31st round (some impressive late round drafting that year). It looks like Anderson has had a small number of blow-up outings that have inflated his ERA. Since late May he has a sub-3.00 ERA. He has allowed 0 runs in 31 of his 41 appearances this year. This past Thursday he struck out 5 of the 7 batters he faced versus the Padres. Anderson’s fastball averages 96-mph, and the slider is his go to pitch. He just turned 29 years old this month, but is actually under team control through 2024. He could be a sneaky good option for a team in need of stability in the middle innings. Given that team control, the Marlins are likely in no rush to trade him. In fact, since the Marlins will likely dump Sergio Romo for whatever they can get prior to the deadline, there is a good chance they put him in the closer's role and try to inflate his value prior to next year's trade deadline. My guess is that his price is going to be higher than it may appear to be.
  10. Same team, but I'm looking at their de-facto closer Shawn Kelly. He's 35, has a slightly higher but very good BB rate (1.4) and has a $2.5M option for 2020 with a $250K buyout. He's been very good 4 of the last 5 years with 2017 an aberration likely because he was hurt part of the year. Not a "proven closer", but has some experience closing this year. At 35 he shouldn't cost much, and isn't in the Rangers long-term plans. Martin is an interesting guy. Signed out of the independent leagues at age 24, got to the majors and then missed two years likely with injury. Not much track record with him, shouldn't cost much either.
  11. I read that and it said nothing about his background, just "15 things you didn't know about me". I assume you didn't read it. I don't give a crap that he liked the ending of Game of Thrones and hasn't played Fortnite.
  12. Who the heck is Luis Contreras? I realize he is 23 and in low rookie ball, but he's from Venezuela, not a guy who pitched 3-4 years at a D-1 college. In 19.2 IP he's given up 11 hits, walked 8, and struck out 37 - that's 16.9 K/9.
  13. Missouri has similar conceal/carry laws, and one of the issues around Busch Stadium (which, unlike MKE, is downtown) is people breaking into cars looking for guns to steal. My hypothesis is that people are looking for people going back to their cars because they forgot to leave it there and then targeting those cars. Considering that there are 81 home games, that I'd be surprised if 10% of fans even own guns much less handguns (rifles/hunting guns much more likely), the large number of families/children that go to games, and the large number of season ticket holders (who know not to bring guns with them), I'll guess it's not many and go with a dozen a year.
  14. Could use his bat too - he's hitting .320.
  15. Yep, that was building all night. Fried was getting pitches that Houser wasn’t . Yeah, if anyone would know that it would be Grandal...
  16. Overall a very good outing from Houser. Two ground ball infield singles given up to two of the best young players in the game, followed by a home run to one of the best players in the game. Nothing to be ashamed of. Could easily be 1-0.
  17. Wheeler supposedly going on IL with "shoulder fatigue": https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/07/mets-trade-rumors-zack-wheeler-injured-list-shoulder.html Not sure I'd want to part with any top prospects for him.
  18. I'm sorry, but what is the Hug reference here and how does that relate to potentially being traded?
  19. Kennedy is 34 and due $16.5M next year, as well as the remainder of that this year (~$8M right now). The Royals will have to throw in a lot more than $6.5M to get those prospects. For reference, last year a 34-year-old proven closer in Joakim Soria who was making only $9M was acquired for Kodi Medeiros and a 20-year-old DSL arm and the White Sox kicked in $1M to cover the buyout of Soria's 2019 option. If the Brewers weren't going to pay Soria $10M for 2019, they sure as heck aren't going to pay Kennedy $16.5M. Kennedy isn't a proven closer like Soria, so the net would have to be no more than $3M for the rest of this year and no more than $5M for next year. The Royals would have to kick in at least $16.5M in order to get those prospects, and likely only two of the three.
  20. Would love to see a recent scouting report on him if someone has one. Second only to Braves top prospect Ian Anderson in strikeouts in the Southern League this year; in terms of K/9, he's fifth among full-time starters behind Brendan McKay (consensus top 50 prospect), Ian Anderson (consensus top 40 prospect), Scott Moss, and Jimmy Lambert, but the latter two have much higher BB rates.
  21. It's likely because Cashner is making $9.5M this year, and if he pitches another 90 innings this year his 2020 option for $10M becomes guaranteed.
  22. I'd be shocked if any decisions are made before July 30th. The next 17 days will determine the path. Unless they win 75% of their games the rest of the month, I don't see any major acquisitions. Likely a couple of deadline free-agent-to-be acquisitions that will only cost a Marcos Diplan, Bowden Francis, Alec Bettinger, Troy Stokes type of prospect(s), someone like an Anthony Swarzak/Xavier Cedeno bullpen acquisition. I don't see them selling either, unless they lose 75% of their games the rest of the month.
  23. Catching is the hardest position to add at the deadline because of unfamiliarity with the pitchers. Grandal would be by far the best option for the Dodgers because he is perhaps the only catcher they could add who is familiar with most of the staff. Not a bad idea, but barring a big losing streak over the next 17 days I don't see the Brewers waiving the white flag.
