  1. Tampa or Washington could take Edmunds. Just my luck if he slides though, because on my first run I had Edmunds but changed it...
  2. The last first round safety the Packers tried to convert to corner didn't work out real well...
  3. Why safety for GB? That's about the last position they need.
  4. Hey Dallas fans, Roger Goodell isn't the reason your team missed the playoffs last year and the Eagles won the Super Bowl.
  5. I don't know if those were THE problems, but I think they were big problems and I'm inclined not to double up on positions with recent high draft picks (namely safety) on the assumption that the problem was the personnel.
  6. I would be very surprised if the Packers spent the draft capital necessary to move up earlier in the first round to get a player who may not be a complete player at that position. Ward has questions about whether he is big enough to play the boundary. He can be an excellent slot corner, but you can find good slot corners in the 3rd/4th. Ward is a guy you take if he's BPA at #14, but not the type of guy you spend the picks to move up to get in the first. Same with Davenport - questions about position (can he play OLB, or is he just a DE in a 4-3) and level of competition (he didn't dominate - 8.5 sacks and 17 TFLs are very good, but not what I call dominating at that level). Not the guy you give up picks to move up to get, but you take him if he's BPA at your pick. I'm more confident that Landry and to a lesser extent Josh Jackson and Roquan Smith are complete players at their position; while not tall, Landry has long arms and you don't need to be 6'5" to be a great pass rusher. Matthews and Perry are both 6'3"; Landry is 6'2". If the Packers spend the capital to move up, it's because a guy like Chubb or Tremaine Edmunds is there at #9 or #10 because he doesn't have the questions that guys like Ward and Davenport have. BTW - Edmunds is the guy I had as "If he's still available" in the 1st, but he was gaining a lot of helium at the time and thought no way he'd last until #9/10 much less 14.
  7. They are not comparable. First, the Packers didn't keep Bradford at OLB - they tried moving him to ILB. Second, Landry not only has more length but also tested much better at the combine: Landry: 4.64 (40), 6.88 (3-cone), 4.19 (short shuttle) Bradford: 4.76 (40), 7.25 (3-cone), 4.30 (short shuttle) Scouting reports also say that Landry has elite burst, ability to dip and rip, and bend the edge. Landry also forced at least 10 fumbles in his career. There's a reason Bradford lasted until the 4th round, and why Landry will go in the first. Landry's comp is closer to James Harrison than Bradford. Third... how do you know how much effort Bradford put into learning his position and adjusting to the league, and how do you know how much effort Landry will put in?
  8. Very nice ovation for Cain. Really cool to see fans do that for a former player. Happens when you help a team win a world series for the first time in a couple of decades.
  9. Tyler Mahle has yet to give up a hit through six innings and has struck out 11 Braves. I recall a couple of folks here upset because the Brewers could only score two runs off of him. EDIT: Freddie Freeman ended that quickly. But he's kind of good.
  10. If you spend enough time on this site you might come away with the impression that players are robots who will perform the same in any situation or context and that physical ability is the sole determinant of performance. So much that goes on outside of the lines has a lot to do with performance between the lines.
  11. My take on this draft class is that there is a dropoff around #10 overall, and the talent likely available at #14 isn't much different than the talent that is likely to be there in the early 2nd round. I'd take #23 and #31 as the talent isn't going to be much lower than at #14, especially #14 to #23. This is a draft that doesn't have a lot at the top, thus the temptation to move up for Chubb, but I think has a lot of depth where even the 5th rounders won't be that much lower in talent than mid-late 2nd rounders.
  12. Four teams in major league baseball have a winning percentage lower than the 2003 Detroit Tigers (.265) - Reds (.150), Royals (.211), Tigers (.235), and Marlins (.250) with the Orioles (.285) close. (I don't count the 1962 Mets as they were an expansion franchise - with very different rules than when MLB expanded in the 90's - but they were .250) I wonder if this year a team will not win 40 games. The Royals and Tigers are in the same division, and the Orioles have Tampa in their division, but the Reds and Marlins are in tough divisions.
  13. Brandon Woodruff and a whole lot of nothing on Saturday. I'm sensing Woodruff back to MIL, Suter to bullpen, Drake DFA pretty soon.
  14. Cardinals 6-0 versus Reds. 6-8 versus everyone else. Cubs 2-3 versus Reds and Marlins.
  15. For as maligned as the Brewers offense has been around here, they are 8th in the NL in OPS. For as maligned as the Brewers pitching has been around here, they are 8th in the NL in OPS-A. The Brewers lead the NL in Save Opportunities... and Blown Saves. Four teams have worse Save % though, including the Dodgers. The Brewers pitching is 2nd in the NL in innings, one behind San Diego but 7.2 ahead of 3rd place Colorado.
  16. Kodi Medeiros is having a Burnes-esque relief outing too.
  17. Somehow in 2.1 IP Houser gave up two hits, walked two, struck out three, and only threw 38 pitches. Burnes being Burnes. Medeiros being... Burnes.
  18. On the bright side, Corbin Burnes is having a nice night. Edit: Jinx!!
  19. How many times this year has Thames not been in the starting lineup the day after hitting a HR?
  20. Excellent starts for Bowden, Bowdien, and Trey, and outstanding "relief" appearance by Luis. Ray with another multi-hit game with an XBH.
  21. Runner at 3rd, two out... please resist the temptation to "throw one in the dirt" to try to induce a swing and miss.
  22. If Santana isn't hitting for power, he is basically useless. He isn't a good baserunner, and is a negative-value defender. He strikes out a ton. I guess he does take walks, which I suppose is saying something with this lineup. He did steal 15 bases last year at an almost 80% success rate.
  23. I can't remember who said it, but a long-time MLB reliever recently said that it's not how many games he pitched in but how many times he got up in the pen that wore him down over the course of the season. Getting up and ready, but not going in, might be as taxing on the arm as actually pitching. If the relievers are going in pretty much every time they warm up - instead of warming up and then sitting down because the starter got out of the inning - the additional appearances might be marginal additional stress, if any.
  24. Pretty sure he meant shortstop, not short-season ball. And yes, to And That's comment, all it takes is a two-week hot or cold streak and these discussions so far are moot.
  25. Star of "Night Court", a.k.a. "Harry the Hat" (and "Skinny-butt"). I can't tell you how many reruns of Night Court and Cheers I watched nightly when I was a teenager (with absolutely nothing to do in the dumpy little town I was forced to grow up in). Can't believe he was only 65.
