  1. Locke had a few bad throws and one really bad decision, but he was put in a bad situation by a bad play call. As @Joseph Zarr said, when it's 3rd and 14, the OL is getting dominated, and your QB is taking a shotgun snap at the goal line, you run a QB draw, maybe a quick WR screen, and get out of there and don't make it any worse. Locke wasn't good but he wasn't the problem today - it was losing the LOS on both sides of the ball. DL held it's own for a while, but got tired by the 4th quarter. Nowhere for Walker to run - the Badgers aren't going to win with Walker averaging 2.7 ypc. WRs dropping passes or not looking for them. And one of the hardest things to defend is a good backup QB because you aren't game planning for him, if there even is any film on him to prepare with. Honestly, this is what happens when they wear red pants. Bad decision before even getting on the field.
  2. Ohio State almost got caught looking ahead to Penn State.
  3. Prime time under the lights. Nobody thought the Badgers had a chance on 10/16/10 vs. #1 Ohio State, especially with Scott Tolzien at QB. But under the lights at night... While this isn't new news (rumors back in August turned out to be accurate), the media is trying their best to distract James Franklin this week: https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/41979922/james-franklin-refuses-comment-rape-charges-ex-penn-state-football-players Penn State has Ohio State next week. Will they get caught looking ahead?
  4. I wonder if FG% on grass surfaces decreases as the game goes on. Does the effect of cleats on grass/sod for the duration of the game and the subsequent chewing up of the field affect FG%? I don't disagree with this. But it goes back to what I said earlier - free agent kickers don't want to come to Green Bay (or other outdoor, cold-weather teams). And I don't know that many good kickers get to free agency very often.
  5. No wonder the ESPN 30-for-30 on Fernando was on yesterday. It's one of my favorites, definitely top 10, maybe top 5, and really illuminates the cultural impact that Fernando had on the perception of the Dodgers in the heavy Hispanic community. Not just the increase in fans for the games he pitched, but the indirect effect he had on the millions of Hispanic fans who've attended Dodgers games in the last 35 years. Counting stats be damned, he belongs in the Hall. You absolutely cannot tell the story of the history of baseball without talking about him.
  6. That's funny, I don't see Carlson's name anywhere in my post. I was refuting OSS's statement, "You need to be damn near 100% from inside 45 yards these days. You get to miss one kick like that a year. Two of them and they are looking at the waiver wire. Three and you are done."
  7. "Figures never lie, but liars figure." Chris Boswell has been PIT's kicker since 2015. He's missed seven FGs under 40 yards and another 20 from 40-49 yards including 10 from under 50 yards since the start of the 2021 season. And he's missed another 15 extra points including seven in the last five years. PIT had a winning record in all but one of his seasons, and that year they were .500. You might want to limit your analysis to kickers who have kicked for Green Bay, Chicago, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, and New England (New York winters are relatively mild) to determine what the standard is.
  8. (See: Christian Alliegro, Wisconsin Badgers vs Northwestern)
  9. Edwin Diaz got 5/102. Hader got 5/95 Raisel Iglesias got 4/58. 35-year-old Kenley Jansen got $16M/year. 34-year-old Ryan Pressly got $15M/year. Taylor Rogers - yes, that Taylor Rogers who stunk for the Brewers - got 3/33. Devin isn't taking $20M for one year.
  10. With the game in hand and no real offensive threat from NW, I think they deliberately played conservative so as not to put anything more on film for Penn State to see.
  11. Huh, imagine that - elite closer giving up go-ahead HR to elite HR hitter.
  12. First in MLB according to Fangraphs: https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders/major-league?pos=all&stats=fld&lg=all&qual=y&type=1&season=2024&month=0&season1=2024&ind=0&pageitems=30&sortcol=12&sortdir=default&pagenum=1
  13. Turang led all of MLB regardless of position in DRS. He definitely has a shot.
  14. Carlson has the highest FG% (among those w/>1 attempt) in Packers history. So, either no kicker in Packers history has done their job, or people have unrealistic expectations. Agree 100%. It's just not that easy, particularly in Green Bay. Free agent kickers don't want to come to Green Bay. (Or Chicago. Or Buffalo.) That's why they had to pay Longwell and Crosby top-of-the-market rate to stay in GB even though they weren't top of the market in FG%. So, they either need to pay well above market rate (and the subsequent salary cap ramifications) to get someone to come to GB or they have to take their chance on a young kicker (like they did with Longwell and Crosby). Yeah, it's easy to say just throw a bunch of money at a kicker. So, what position do you short? People say the same thing about backup QB - why don't they have a good backup QB?!? How much do you spend there, and what position do you short to have a good backup QB? I agree with the principle. In reality, it's not that simple.
  15. Maybe there will be baseball in Oakland next year after all...
  16. Butker was drafted by and released by the Panthers his rookie year before signing with KC.
  17. Missed that the Packers signed Omar Brown to the practice squad back on 8/29.
  18. There's been talk that the Cardinals are looking to rebuild. Arenado has three years left, $74M, of which Colorado is paying $10M. He's still plus defensively, his best days are behind him with his bat but can he rebound to his 2023 numbers? The Cardinals would have to throw in some cash themselves, but he would be one helluva risk/reward gamble if they are going to go for it. The more likely and less sexy option is Ramon Urias from Baltimore. They need to make room for Holliday, leaving him the odd man out. 1.5 bWAR/0.9 fWAR in 300 PAs, might be better defensively at 2B and keep Ortiz at 3B with Turang moving to SS. Perhaps there's a LHH platoon mate for Urias (Collins? Dunn? Frelick?) to minimize his splits.
  19. Exactly. It rarely happens their rookie year, and would have been a big mistake to let him go.
  20. Colorado’s Regional Air Quality Council voted to approve recommendations to ban the sale of gas-powered lawn equipment starting in 2025. The council decided to recommend to the commission to ban the sale of gas-powered lawn equipment for residential use starting in 2025. https://www.denver7.com/news/local-news/colorado-air-quality-group-pushes-forward-recommendations-to-ban-gas-lawn-equipment-sales
  21. Going into last week Gary had been chipped the 3rd most of any player in the league. There have been rumblings of dissatisfaction with the DL coach, that he's more of a rah-rah guy than someone who can coach guys up.
  22. There's no way to quantify it, but I'd be willing to bet that his clubhouse presence and intangibles are worth at least two team wins per season. There's a reason the Brewers have been overachieving and I think he's a big reason behind it. Team chemistry matters. A lot.
  23. Turang and Frelick both led their positions in defensive runs saved by a wide margin. No big names that Frelick is competing with at RF, Turang has a big name in Ketel Marte he has to compete with, but Turang was credited with 21 DRS whereas Marte was credited with only 10. Good chance the Brewers come away with two GGs.
  24. 1) Yes. See: his brother B) I saw a bad hold, not a bad kick. And a bad snap. And I said so at the time: https://brewerfanatic.com/forums/topic/41857-divisional-round-packers-49ers-saturday-jan-20th-715pm-fox/page/21/#comment-1561413
  25. This early in the season? Look at the players who are at the top of FG% this season. McLaughlin (100%) - 7th team, 71% in 2021, 78% in 2019, waived or released eight times. Grupe - 2nd year, 81% last year. Bates - kicks in a dome, had to go to the UFL/XFL/whatever first. Reichard - rookie who kicks in a dome. Folk - 78% in 2012, 77% in 2011, 77% in 2010, 64% in 2009. Prater - 74% in 2008, 76% in 2011, 75% in 2020. Boswell (94%) - 65% in 2018, 75% in 2022. Seibert (94%) - fifth team, 67% (released after going 6 of 9) in 2020, 60% (waived after going 3 of 5) in 2022. It's almost like there's some variance or randomness to FG%.
