  1. I have wondered this too. Escobar was the number 8 prospect on MILB and Gamel was 23. That seems like impact prospects. I am sure Law must not be as high on Escobar or Gamel but when you have two guys in the top 23 that is pretty solid.
  2. If you are going to use a computer for what you just mentioned I would go with a PC. I have had mine now for over two years and it is great and I use it for similar things. However, I would not by a low-end. I would get a decent one because I have heard the cheaper ones have problems with things like keys falling off the keyboard.
  3. I am surprised some different scouting services rankings of both Lucroy and Taylor Green. Green was 7th on OPS in the FSL and Lucroy would have been tied for 6th if he had a couple more at bats. Only 2 of the 6 guys ahead are younger than Lucroy and I think only one was younger than Green so it is not like they were way older than the competition. I guess I would understand more if there were big questions about their defense, but Lucroy's has been graded pretty well, but I am not sure about Green. I am excited to see what both these guys do this upcoming year as I expect their prospect status to continue to rise as people look beyond overall athletic ability and upside and look at their production and consistency.
  4. That would give the Brewers three in Yo, Parra and Sheets. Would the Twins have more with Slowey, Baker, Blackburn and Perkins. Not to mention the Twins developed Liriano from high A on. That is some impressive pitcher development right there.
  5. The chat was not that bad although there are some things on there that just don't make sense. Tom said R.J. Seidel had a solid year at West Virginia. I thought R.J. was one of the bigger disappointments last year. Tom also seemed really high on Michael Brantley saying he would see time in the majors this year. While that could happen I just don't see it. Where would he play for the Indians?
  6. Bradley may be a better hitter than Edmonds but the argument is that to make the team better than last year he has to put up better numbers than Edmonds did last year. Edmonds had an OPS of .937 which is great. Bradley has been better than that past two years, but never before that. I am guess he is a slight improvemnt there. Again Gregg may be more accomplished than Wood but he actually needs to be as valuable as Marmol was for that to be a step up. Marmol becomes the closer and could be a little more successful than Wood but Wood was good last year. Gregg cannot give the flexibility that Marmol did. DeRosa is far superior to Miles unless you look just at BA. Fontenot is a nice player and if he does what he did last year than they are fine here, but do you get the 2007 version or 2008 version. And nobody is talking about Gaithright because he is awful These moves in terms of production compared to last year are lateral at best but most are drop offs. I look at by thinking how would I feel if I were a Cubs fan. The only move I would like is getting Bradley, but to get him I had to get rid of a guy who was one of our top 3 bats last year in DeRosa and a productive 5th man in Marquis (although getting rid of that contract is nice). I would not like moving Marmol out a role he was great in and replacing Wood with Gregg especially at the cost of prospects. I would be nervous as heck about Harden's shoulder and the fact that he is not pitching yet. I would not like the idea of Olson or Guzman being our number 5 guy if Harden is out for an extended amount of time.
  7. While I agree they probably knew about it, the quote by Rothschild saying he is nowhere near pitching off a mound seems to make it sound like it is pretty big deal. I am guessing they were hoping it would be better by now Now this could just be a sportswriter making something sound worse than it is, but how would we have felt last year if we found out Sheets had a small tear in his shoulder and was not pitching off a mound? We would have been nervous and considering Harden has had more serious injury problems than Sheets this is a big deal. If move Samardzija to AAA to start who does that leave as their go to guys in the bullpen? Marmol, Gregg, Wuertz, Cotts, Hart, and Gaudin. I guess that could be good enough for them.
  8. How is pointing out statistics from last year grasping at straws? Of the the three mentioned Bradley for Edmonds and Pie is the only obvious upgrade, but it really is not obvious because of how great Edmonds numbers were for the Cubs. As the bad defensive Brewers team in the past have shown defense matter and an OF of Soriano, Johnson/Fukudome and Bradley will be poor. Wood at worst is equal to Gregg, but I know I would rather have Wood than Gregg. DeRosa is heads and shoulders above Miles. There is actually a lot to indicate they wont reach what they did last year. Harden is already hurt. Marshall is their 5th starter and they have no depth behind him, so their rotation will be Z, Dempster, Harden (if healthy), Lilly, Marshall, and Guzman/Smardizija as the 6th. Marquis may not have been great but he provided nice depth for them. The have less talented depth in the infield and outfield than they did last year. Now I am not saying they will drop to being a .500 type team but they are not as good as they were last year in my mind. If Harden magically stays healthy and so does Bradley then they will be close to what they were last year, but history says both of those guys will miss significant time and the Cubs don't have a lot depth to back that up. The other big questions are do they get the 2007 Theriot and Dempster or the 2008 versions. This is not grasping at straws. It is looking at a team objectively just like I would with the Brewers and the many questions we have this year. Edit - I posted this just after rydogg and agree with everything he said
  9. How is Gregg replacing Howry? Marmol is taking Woods spot so Gregg if he is not replacing Wood is replacing Marmol. The small step up from Wood to Marmol is lost in the large step back from Marmol to Gregg. Marmol was great in his role as he could eat up multiple innings which maybe Gregg can do but not as effectively as Marmol. Smardzija is replacing Howry. It is hard to know what you are getting in Smardzija. He was great in August but awful in September. He should be a step up from Bobby Howry last year. Miles may be a switch-hitter but he is better as a righty of his career and is really not good as a lefty, .690 OPS and .321 OBP. All his numbers for the most part are worse than what DeRosa put up versus RHP. So, you do not add something to your team if the lefty you add is worse at hitting RHP than the righty before him. Jim Edmonds is also a lefty like endaround said and he put up great numbers last year. Bradley might match those numbers over the year or be a little better but he is not a significant upgrade to what was there last year. Both guys are injury prone, and edmonds is better in the field.
  10. They saved 5 million total in the Marquis deal and saved about 2 million reportedly in trading DeRosa but adding Miles. It that is true and Bradley is getting 10 million this year they not only ate the net saving up but spent an extra 2 million. Now I guess they could still have the money to do the Peavy deal once the ownership thing is finalized, but I don't know how much they have left right now.
  11. I completely agree with this. Fontenot and Marshall were the MLB guys rumored in the trade but neither can be traded right now without losing the little depth they have. Unless they can unload spare parts like Cedeno and now some of the pitchers they got with Vitters, I do not see what they have to get this deal down. If they made these trades with the hope of getting Peavy I think it is a huge risk, because they could be left with a bunch of avegae prospects and little depth.
  12. They also lost Jason Marquis he put up nice numbers for a number 5 pitcher last year and gave them depth they lack right now as everyone of their starters has questions except Lilly. People are undervaluing DeRosa. The numbers he put up with the flexibility he gave them is going to be hard to replace. Aaron Miles has a career OPS of .693 and an OBP of .329. He does not have a lot of value. Kevin Gregg is not as good as Kerry Wood and now they have lost the flexibility they had with Marmol as they make him a closer. Bradley is a nice addition, but last year was the first year since 2004 he played more than 100 games and he DH'ed most of the year. Their defense in the OF could be horrendous with those Wrigley winds. That does not even take into effect the Harden's injury, Z's becoming a pitcher who has about a 4 ERA, and Dempster coming off a career year and most likely regressing at least a bit. This is not to say the Brewers have a had a good off-season and are going to catch the Cubs. I just do not see how the Cubs have really improved themselves and in the process they have left themselves with a very depleted farm system. If they do get Peavy a lot of this changes, but right now I am feel they are worse off than last year.
  13. I was excited to see Blindness as well but I thought it was terrible. I did not engage with the characters, the filming seemed sloppy, it was like they were trying to be really artistic but it turned out poorly. There were other things that I personally did like about like the graphic sexual content that I just was not expecting.
  14. Harden makes Sheets look like an ironman. Here are Hardens starts over the last five years, 31, 19, 9, 4, 25. Which is 88 total. Sheets over those five years (which takes out years of 34, 34, and 25) started 34, 22, 17, 24, 31. Which is 128. Sheets has averaged close to 28 starts a year over his career whereas Harden has averaged 17 starts a year.
  15. The reality is that none of the pitching prospects they received are that great. They would be nothing more than filler in this deal. Vitters would have to be the center and a good amount more would have to go along with that. If the Cubs really wanted to send the guys from Baltimore to San Diego ( and if that was the design all along) they why did they not do a three team deal. If the hope for these trades was to land Peavy it is really, really risky because if the Padres do not decide to deal Peavy you are left with guys you want. That is why I think the Cubs thought these moves made the team better. I just do not think they did. DeRosa was extremely valuable and nobody they got in any of their trades outside of Gregg help this team right now.
  16. I am not sure if I would consider a guy with a 6.87 ERA in MLB and with 111/90 K/BB rate a good depth guy. He put up nice AAA numbers but his MLB numbers seem to show is a guy with average at best stuff who got minor leaguers to chase but MLB bats have held off. He could be their depth and if he is that makes me happy as a Brewers fan.
  17. Olson already has fizzled to the tune of a 6.87 ERA and a nearly 1/1 K to BB rate along with a high 80's fastball. Sure he could figure everything out but a Pie for this guy trade is great for Baltimore. I do not know if you meant you would love Olson or just a different starting pitcher. I obviously would love a someone with experience but a guy like Olson does nothing for me. I would have just as of rather have a guy like Zach Jack.
  18. maybe none of us were but with the lack of depth the Cubs have they must have thought he was. They have Z, Harden, Dempster, Lilly and Marshall, but after that what do they have Guzman? We lack depth too, but with the financial resources of the Cubs they should protect themselves more and I am sure they will try to pick someone up. However, I really question if they made themselves better this off-season.
  19. According to reports on rotoworld from the Sun Times Rich Harden has a small tear in his shoulder that requires surgery in some but can be healed by strength and conditioning. Larry Rothschild seems worried and Harden seems to think he will be fine. Rightfully so Cubs fans are freaking out about this over on Northside. If Harden does in fact need surgery the central could be very interesting this year. Now he could very well turn out okay by the beginning of the year but a guy with a long history of injuries having a tear in his shoulder is a pretty big deal.
  20. I will fourth Dave Ramsey and vehemently disagree that he is a scam. The company I work for gives us all training from Dave Ramsey to become more financially aware and it is great stuff. I know a lot of people have gone through Dave Ramsey's financial peace stuff and have really been helped out by it.
  21. Peavy is a great idea except he would have to waive a no trade clause to come here and he has not done that. This is not Melvin's fault. Really nothing with the current state of our rotation can be blamed on Melvin. He went after CC, it did not pan out. The other big name guys had serious issues, like Burnett's contract/injury history, Lowe's age, Johnson wanted to stay out West, Smoltz probably had his choice of teams and picked a contender like Boston, Jamie Moyer is old, Sheets does not seem to want to come back, etc. What was Melvin supposed to do? The only option is to trade someone and create another glaring hole on the roster. The only guy who we would even think about trading who is worth a top end starter is Prince, but who plays first, bats behind Braun and is left-handed? I guess we could trade Hardy, but who plays short, Escobar needs another year. The blame seems to lay not on Melvin, but if it falls on anyone it maybe should be Jack Z for not developing any starting pitching near major league ready. Sure, we drafted Parra and Yo, but we traded for Bush and McClung, and signed Suppan. Small to mid-market teams need to develop pitching and we just have not done that, our we need guys to have career years so we can trade them for pitching, but Hart struggled down the stretch, Weeks has not panned out, etc, leaving us with few pieces to trade.
  22. Is Hart in the same year as Hardy? If so I would be surprised if he got the money Hardy did. Maybe Corey's second half collapse is clouding my judgment. But Hardy plays a premiere fielding position and put up better numbers than Hart last year in most categories.
