  1. Thanks for the updates colbyjack. I am not as knowledgeable on prospects as many here (that is one of the reasons I love this sites), so I have a couple questions. What type of pitcher does Porcello project to be? He is young for high A and his ERA and WHIP were great last year but his K/9 were not. Is he a command pitcher more than a power pitcher? Why was no one talking about the steal the Indians got for Casey Blake with Carlos Santana (along with Jon Meloan who seems to just had a rough year after a very successful milb career) when the deal went down? What a haul for a good not great 3B. Kudos to the Indians for stocking their system in two trades. A guy who was 14 in LaPorta and a top 10 guy in Santana. Then you add in solid guys like Brantley, Bryson, and a bounce back type guy in Meloan and that is a nice two trades.
  2. Do people have guesses for who is in the top 10? David Price for sure Matt Weiters for sure Carlos Santana from Cleveland - who BA has rated higher than LaPorta Cameron Maybin Colby Rasmus - did not have a great year Travis Snider from Toronto? Jason Heyward Rick Porcello - although his K numbers were not that good last year. I do not know a ton of other top guys and I am sure I am missing couple. So for the top ten that I am sure of would be Price, Weiters, Maybin and Heyward.
  3. Now, Handicourt is reporting there are reports the Giants are ready to move on CC. What is their payroll going to be this year? Zito and CC would be over 40 million a year for two pitchers. Add the money already spent on Affeldt, Howry, and Renteria and this team is defintely a buyer in free agency right. Handicourt alludes to the Renteria signing as one that would show CC the Giants are serious about getting better but I really do not see this signing that way. This seems to show they are not that smart when it comes to free agency and CC would have to live with that for 5 years.
  4. I am surprised that Escobar is not in the 11-30 range. I really do not see him as a top 10 prospect with the potential shortcomings in his offensive game. That said I cannot fathom why he would fall out of the rankings after the season he just had.
  5. So, who aren't they trading in San Diego? They are trying to get rid of Peavy and already let go of Hoffman. I know Greene isn't really that good, so this is not as big of deal. The article says they want the payroll under 40 million. I know people are looking at Bobby Abreu being a good fit for the Brewers, how would Brian Giles look at one of those corner spots? What would it take to get him?
  6. That seems pretty high to me. Ryan Howard got 10 million after having won an MVP and following that up with 47 HR and an OPS around .970 and Prince has not matched Howard's numbers. My guess would be that Fielder gets 8-8.5 million, but I really have no idea and zzz could be right on.
  7. Here is the 31-40 list from milb Like I said earlier if Escobar was 42 last year I have to assume he will be in the 20's after his offensive production this year dwarfed his seasons in the past. Salome's defense and lack of a 2nd position of he does not stick at catcher really hurt him. If we get three guys in the top 50 like I think we will, I think that shows the system is doing well. I think Salome, Cain, and Taylor Green are a nice second tier after the three that will be ranked in the top 50.
  8. I agree completely about McClung. He had a great last month but he scares me as a closer. His WHIP as a reliever last year was around 1.4 with 71 hits and walks in 41 innings. That does not comfort me. Compare that to Hoffman who had a WHIP of 1.03 and has not had a WHIP higher than 1.18 in 14 years.
  9. I just don't understand why we can't get in the mix for Peavy if what the Cubs are offering is true. I know we don't have young pitching but what if we have a three team deal with the Yankees and send them Cameron, we get Ian Kennedy and flip him to the Padres with another top prospect, and Gwynn Jr. Fontenot is the only Cubs player I think is good that they are offering. I know Peavy would need to okay a deal to us and get an extension so that is probably the reason this would never happen but a guy can dream
  10. How many teams are out their looking for closers? Obviously the Mets are going to get one of the big names. Who else would we likely be bidding against? I like our chances to land either Wood or Hoffman and I feel like each solidifies our bullpen and give us flexibility with McClung if he is needed to be in the rotation.
  11. Well Escobar was 42nd last year on this list and I doubt he did any thing to lower himself. My guess is Escobar and Gamel will both be the 20-30 range. Salome has a chance but I would have guessed him to be in the 40-50 range, so I would be surprised if he makes it. I wonder where LaPorta will end up?
  12. The Twins list does seem a little down, and different from what I seem to remember for them as 4 of the top 5 are position players and Mijares the pitcher is a reliever. They usually seem to be stacked in the starting pitching department. Their next 5 is full of pitching though, but some of the guys seem suspect like Mulvey who was good but not really good last year. Revere is interesting to project on that team as well with Span and Gomez in the OF. They could easily have the fastest OF in the majors if Revere progresses but he is a ways away.
  13. Fukudome was 23rd out of 29 NL OF in OPS, that is not that good (He was 8th of 10 RF). You like to look at OBP, but if it comes with that little power then it is not as valuable. I think he did have a nice OBP. However his power was nonexistent and he played at Wrigley which is a nice place for lefties (look what it did for Edmonds) and he had poor numbers.
  14. The main point is the same one logan brought up. Hart is one year removed from a year much better than Fukudome last year so he has a track record in MLB. Fukudome does not so it is harder to project him bouncing back. Low power lefties who are best played in corner OF spots do not have a ton of value in my mind. If Fukudome was a good CF (which I have seen nothing to assume he is) then there would be a debate as to who is more valuable for the Brewers him or Hart, but I still would not want him because his only year as MLB player was not good.
  15. Couldn't we look at what the Royals gave up to get Crisp (Ramon Ramirez)? They consider Crisp better than DeJesus, so if you you Ramon Ramirez as a starting point as to what we would have to give up what we would have in a similar vain? I know DeJesus has a better contract than Crisp, so we may have to give a little more but the Royals do not seem like they are in love with DeJesus as a player, so I think Gamel, Parra, and Jeffress are all too much if you look at it that way. Ramon Ramirez is a good reliever who is relatively young at 27. Last year was his first really good year and in 06 he was pretty good. I am guessing the Royals would either want middle infield help or young pitching. I just don't what would match up but i think Parra, Gamel and Jeffress are too high, so I was wondering what we have that is similar to Ramon Ramirez in value.
  16. The OPS's have already been shown to disprove Fukudome as better than Hart last year. That is great that he has a nice arm but how many times does that make a difference. Even if the Cubs picked up some of the salary we would still be on the hook for three years. Hart is younger, has more upside and has had a good full year in the majors in 2007. Hart has proven that he can hit MLB pitching for a year and Fukudome hasn't. So, why pay more and trade a player for a guy who has never been better than the guy you are already have. Not too mention if Fukudome does not turn it around the Cubs are stuck with a really expensive bench player for 3 years.
  17. Maybe the Royals are not the best judge of talent. I mean that gave Jose Guillen a boat load of money, so they have missed on some guys before. There are numerous players who blossom after they leave a team. DeJesus fits some of our needs.

  21. So if we did the trades mentioned it would be Cameron and Weeks for DeJesus and Cano. I like parts of that but really don't like the decrease in defense. From all I have read Cano is actually worse that Weeks and DeJesus is not as good as Cameron for sure. Cano is coming off a down year but his OPS has consistently been better than Weeks outside of this past year. DeJesus and Cameron have had a very similar career OPS. This definitely would give us a more balanced lefty/righty lineup, but I am not sure it would give us a better lineup. I would be surprised if the Yankees would trade Cano for one year of Cameron but maybe they would DeJesus ? Cano/3B Braun Fielder Hardy Hart ? Cano/3B Kendell
  22. The article actually leaves me a little optimistic. One of the other big rivals is supposed to be the Dodgers and their offer according to the article is 6 years around 110 million. Our 5 year 100 million offer is better than that per year especially if you factor in cost of living. We could at least match that deal considering our starting point. Outside of that the rest of the teams in the "bidding war" are just speculation. He says Boston will be in because the Yankee's are but I think Boston is smarter than that. They want to land Tex and they have good pitching with Dice-K, Beckett, Lester and their young kids. He think the White Sox, Tigers, and Mariners should be in, but there is not a lot of indication they are as of yet and CC said he wanted to get this done fast. I think the odds of us getting CC have gone up since the season ended. However, I want this to happen fast so we can move on if he ends up somewhere else.
  23. Can someone tell me if he really is a decent CF? I remember when they signed him people questioned if he could play CF in the majors and nothing about how the Cubs handled him makes me think he can. He will be a guy who has value as a 4th OF but I do not see him as a an above average starter if he can't play CF well. Even if he is adequate his defense pales in comparison to Cameron and he has a bad contract. I would much rather have Cameron next year. The Corey Hart comparisons are valid, but Hart had a very good year and a half which makes me think he slumped not that the league figured him out. That could be the same for Fukudome but he does not have a good season in the US to rest his hat on.
  24. Okay so after the first half of the season he looked lost. Batting .217 with an OBP of .314. He had 12 extra base hits the second half of the year. He walks a lot which is a plus. However, I really doubt he is a solid CF if the Cubs refused to play him out there, even with Pie struggling at first and Edmonds hurt some. I have not heard from anyone that he is a good CF, maybe I am wrong.
  25. He has more value for us staying on the Cubs teams and either being a poor hitting corner OF or a below average fielding CF. He looked completely lost after the first two months of last year and I think pitchers figured out how to work him
