  1. His road splits from last year are abysmal. He had an OPS of .661 on the road although he did have an extremely low BABip of .250 so that could have been somewhat of a fluke. In 06 and 07 he did not have as drastic of splits so he could be a good option, but their will definitely be other teams in the bidding like the Twins who can offer the young pitching the Rockies want.
  2. If the Padres would have been good last year Hoffman would have had 40 plus saves, and a lot of stats have been thrown out to support that he is not really declining at all. He only had one bad stat from what I can tell from last year and that is the home run rate. Outside of that he had a very good year. he is one year removed from being an all-star and two years removed from receiving MVP and Cy Young votes. And as others have mentioned his pitches are ones that are okay if he loses a MPH here or there because it is his filthy change up that is his out pitch.
  3. I really do not think that is true. His numbers last year were just as good as a lot of his other year including a nice K/9 and WHIP. The only number up was the amount of HR he gave up which could be an issue or a fluke. He a better save percentage than almost any other NL reliever including, Torres, Wood, Gagne, Cordero, Gregg, Gagne and was even with Velverde. His numbers were good do not let his age fool you. He only blew 4 saves in 34 chances. That is less than Torres, Gagne, and Riske
  4. That seems like a stretch to me. The rest of his numbers were good, in fact his K/9 rate was higher than any year since 2002. One year of a home run increase could just as easily be a fluke when you look at the rest of his stats. What outside of his HR rate makes it seem like he is done?
  5. Oddly enough this past year his numbers were better on the road or at least about even. In 2007 he was better at home and in 2006 he was better on the road. So, I do not think it is something to really worry about.
  6. With Torres retiring and I am assuming his money off the books I think we could move quickly on Hoffman and still have plenty leftover for any other move.
  7. However, Giles will be a Type A free agent (I am assuming) after the year so it would be Giles+draft picks for Cain or Gillespie. I would definitely do Gillespie for Giles.
  8. Would Hoffman cost any draft picks? If not he is the perfect signing sense every other good option would is a trade or a Type A free agent. Detroit can throw a lot of money at him but I think Melvin showed with Gagne he will open up the pocket book for a closer so it should be interesting. I am sure it wont happen until CC signs somewhere
  9. Cain and Aguilar have made this a much better Fall League season. Cain's game seems to be catching up with his athletic ability. I think he will play much more CF with Darren Ford and Brantley no longer in the system. Aguilar has been sharp and it would be great to our system produce some solid relievers, especially with the price of relief pitching these days. Green was also producing until the unfortunate injury so those three have made up for Jeffress struggles and getting shut down, and Gamel and Salome not being able to participate. The positive is if Cain can stick at CF the position we are pretty thin at in the minors have shown up well in the AFL. Green being a 2b/3b guy, Cain at CF, and Aguilar as a reliever, now if some of the starters like Jeffress and Scarpetta would have fared better it would have been a really good fall in my mind.
  10. Hoffman only blew 4 saves last year. Torres blew 7, Gagne blew 7, Riske blew 5, Shouse blew 3, and Mota blew 3. I think he definitely would benefit this team. He did not blow many saves last year 4 in 34 chances which is an 88% rate. That percentage is better than Joe Nathan (not say he is better though), Kerry Wood, Fransico Cordero, and many others. He had the same percentage as a guy about to strike it rich in Fuentes and the same as Jose Velverde. Even though he is getting older Hoffman is a great option. Comparing him to Gagne just does not add up because Gagne had struggled mightly at the end of 2007 whereas Hoffman had the 2nd best save percentage in the NL and would be coming to a team who had 3 guys blow more saves than he did last year and 2 other who blew just one save less.
  11. Hoffman makes a lot of sense for the Crew because it would be a short term, low-risk signing and it would shore up a weak-spot down the stretch. Torres can move back to the 8th inning. Then you have Villy, Riske, Stetter, and others to pitch the other innings, with McClung staying in the rotation for now. Hoffman had a nice year last year. His WHIP was great, and he converted a good, not great 30 out of 34 chances.
  12. Where does that leave Escobar? I feel like a shortstop is the least of our needs.
  13. Fielder really isn't a 50 HR guy save one year. He is more like a 35-40 HR guy, but I agree the offer for him must be a big one and Beltre does not fit that bill to me. I think you trade Prince for top end young pitching not decent to good guys. He isn't Lyle Overbay so it should not be that type of trade. If Delmon Young got Matt Garza Prince should net some nice pitching.
  14. Then it could make some sense for them because Escobar played some 3rd for them. I just dont think it makes sense for us to trade Hardy unless it is for pitching and good pitching at that.
  15. The Braves have Yunel Escobar at SS right now so I am not sure I see the need for Hardy. They have Chipper at 3B, but I guess if they trade Johnson they would have an opening at 2B. I don't see Blanco as a great option either as he does not have any power, although he does carry an OPB .100 points higher than his BA
  16. Perez had better overall numbers but not by a ton. Perez gave up less hits than Parra but Parra walked fewer guys. Perez walked over a batter every two innings which is not good. Perez's whip was better but I think that mainly had to do with Parra fatiguing down the stretch. I think Parra is poised to put up better numbers next year. Perez does fall in the middle of the pack though in what is a weak group of left-handed pitching in the majors.
  17. This is something that happens in many other cities. Twins fans relentlessly boo A.J. Persynski even though he did not choose to leave the team. Players are normally booed when they leave to go somewhere else, especially when money is an issue. I never got the people who booed Jenkins because it was not money that was the issue it was that he did not have a spot on this team anymore. However, to talk like it is Milwaukee fans having an inferiority complex is wrong because fans all over boo players after they leave for bigger contracts.
  18. If Suppan got 10 million a year I would guess Dempster could get 12-15. I definitely would not want him at that price but someone short on pitching but full of money will.
  19. Who is the potential ace starter? Samardzija did not really have stats in the minors to show he could be an ace. He has not really produced for a full season. His K/BB rate was only good for a 6 start stint in 07 and a six start stint in 08. He has only put up good K numbers one time. I just don't see how he projects as an ace. Marshall is alright and Pie has some potential but there is now this compares to Sabathia because CC was a 3 month rental. Peavey is signed long-term. LaPorta was a top 10 prospect and Samardzija never sniffed that high of a ranking except he had a nice end to this year as a reliever. Brantley and Bryson have good upside as well. Marshall could be a back end of the rotation guy but nothing more. When considering how long the Cubs would have Peavy this a much better deal and one I think we could match fairly easily.
  20. Doesn't McClung seem to have a pretty high walk rate to be a closer? As a reliever he walked 26 guys in 41 innings while allowing 35 hits. I just dont see him as a great option unless the September McClung is the guy we will see the whole year.
  21. I would actually like the trade for Kennedy and then for the Brewers to try to go after Coco Crisp as out CF. Crisp has nowhere near the power but he is a leadoff guy who can hit LH. I do not know what the asking price for Crisp would be so I guess that could keep this from being a good idea but I think it work because you are essentially Cameron and player for Crisp, Kennedy, and also around 4.25 million dollars in salary.
  22. Jon Heyman is reporting that Brewers and the Yankees have been talking but the Brewers are hesitant to deal Cameron because they think he could help lure CC back to Milwaukee because they are good friends. He says the main pieces are either Cabrera or Kennedy which is not a surprise. Kennedy intrigues because even though he struggles with the Yankees his AAA numbers were very good. The Brewers could ease him into the rotation, but I do not know a lot about his stuff.
  23. If the Braves are really offering Escobar, JoJo Reyes/Morton and a top prospect I don't know what the Cubs have to match that. Escobar is better than any young guy the Cubs could offer. The top prospect would probably be in the Vitters category. Vitters who is just in A-ball could not be the center piece they would have to offer something else but I just don't know who they have. Pie, Cedeno, Theriot, Fontenot don't compare to Escobar in my mind. If that is all they can get for Peavy they should just keep him until the trade deadline. What would the Brewers have to give up to match what the Braves and Cubs are reportedly offering? I know we may not be on his list right now but I think we could offer something better. Parra has put up much better numbers than either Reyes or Morton
  24. I could not believe Lilly or Perez would be in the top 5 for LH SP so I decided to check it out. After the top three, Johan, CC and Hamels there really is a huge drop off. Just looking at WHIP and ERA and other random stats the next group includes Lilly, Perez, Lester, Cliff Lee, Danks, Joe Saunders, Paul Maholm, and even the ageless Randy Johnson. There are some young guys like Liriano, Price and Kershaw. Really though who out of that list jumps out at you? Lester, Danks, and Cliff Lee have shown they could be near top end guys but they don't seem to have the same stuff as a CC or Johan but I could be wrong. All that being said, I think Perez could get a really nice deal because stacks up okay with the next tier of LHP.
  25. By the sound of the blog from from JSonline Melvin made a very serious bid. link He takes serious issue with the idea that it was just window dressing so I am guessing it is a pretty big deal that he offered.
