  1. There was talk about the Yankee's really wanting Cameron, is it a possibility he could still be traded to them? I would be up for trying to trade Cameron to the Yankee, even though I dont know what they have that we want. Then trading for Coco Crisp. He was a little better at getting on base last year, and he is a left-handed bat that could be our lead-off guy. We would save money and though we would have to give something up for him I doubt we would have to give up a ton. If it wasn't the Yankees and Red Sox it would be a good three way trade but no way they would be a part of a trade in my mind. I just think Crisp fits this team better and the extra money would allow us more freedom to upgrade at 3B, SP, or RP. The extra 4 million can go a long way for a team like ours.
  2. The idea that we need someone who lights a fire under guys does not make a ton of sense to me. Who are those managers right now in MLB? Obviously Pinella would be up there and Ozzie, but are the most successful managers really the screamers? i understand the logic a little more in a sport like football (even though I dont think it matters there either), but not in baseball. In baseball you need a manager who knows how to get the most out of his players, who can put out a good lineup, and can manage the pitching staff. If Macha does those things relatively well and the other coaches work with the pitchers and hitters they way they need the team will improve, but they won't improve just because a guy yells a lot.
  3. A Soup for Lowell throw in would make the deal look like this. Prince and Soup for Ellsbury, Lowell, Buchholz, and Bard. We get a LF handed-bat that can hit lead-off and play CF so that fills needs. We get a solid 3B but he is injury prone. Buchholz could be a young pitcher to build around with Gallardo and Parra, however he got rocked last year with Boston. Bard could be a potential closer. We still have a big hole at 1B so I dont know what we would do there. I used to be a big trade Prince fan, but after trading LaPorta and then Gamel struggling the second half, I am not sure if I am a big fan of it now. It just seems to leave us with a big hole in the lineup.
  4. The Red Sox are looking at moving Youk to 3B and bringing in Teixeira, so they could be a possibility. I think they value defense up there so I dont know if they would be excited about Prince playing 1B. However, I dont think they is anyway we would get Ellsbury, Buchholz, Bard and another prospect. I think Boston could be a good trade partner though. I just dont know how the trade would add up. If they really did want Prince we could get a starting CF and SP, however we would still have holes at 3B and 1B
  5. I agree that CF is not the top of the list of things that need to change but if we can get a guy like DeJesus or Crisp we will save a money that can be used on the bullpen, rotation or 3B. Those two guys would be locked up longer so we don't have to go through this again. DeJesus and Crisp can both hit left handed and had a higher OBP than Cameron last season. Both guys would meet some of the things that Melvin wants to address for next season. Left-handed bat with better OBP.
  6. What would it cost to get a guy like Crisp? He was rumored for Angel Pagan of the Mets earlier in the year. I am just not sure what we would have to trade. He is the only guy that makes sense to me outside of Cameron, because as someone said one of the best ways to increase runs is to increase the amount of guys on base and Crisp looks like he could do that. He also frees up a little money to go after other guys to fix this team, and we have an $8 million team option for 2010 if he does well, if not we cut our losses.
  7. I brought him up a bit ago but Coco Crisp had an OBP of .344 and is not completely void of power. I know people will debate K's and their overall negative value, but on a team that strikes out a ton a guy like Crisp would help some. His OBP is not above .350 but it is close and we would not have to give up a premium prospect for him.
  8. I really dont know who else we could go out to get, so I am inclined to say we keep Cameron, but one name that I am sure will be thrown around is Coco Crisp. He is not great but he is relatively cheap. If Melvin believes he can use the money elsewhere I would be interested in Crisp. His OPS is lower than Cameron, but his contract is cheaper and he is a switch hitter who had a nice year hitting LH this year. I do not know how good his defense is but he would be that lead off guy a lot of people want.
  9. Parra is young and cheap. He has also has terrific stuff. He needs to nibble a little less and go after hitters more, but I think he is solid 2 type guy with potential to be a 1. I think the smart money is to build around Manny and Yo and try to get another top end guy who is young in a trade. Our rotation would be set up well for a while and we would not be breaking the bank. If we could get a young talented arm in a trade ala the Matt Garza one that would be terrific.
  10. I doubt they will be able to move Cuddyear after his injury-plagued season. Young is trade bait, but his lack of power limits his return. I figured Span would not be available but if they really are hoping to get a quality SS, 3B, or DH , I think they would have to move other people.
  11. Hart actually had a bad last four months. He batted .239 with a .263 OBP the second half of the year. His OPS was .659 the second half of the year. None of his last four months had an OBP above .310. That is not that good. I really like Hart and don't think he is a guy to trade right now with his value being low, but his collapse the second half of the year leaves a lot to be desired.
  12. How about Denard Span? He is a lefty who can play CF. He had an OBP .90 points above his average. He had an OPS over .800. I would not like JJ for him straight up, but he would be an interesting guy in the deal with the surplus of OF'ers they have. It would be nice to move Hall there too.
  13. Doesn't Pierre have a really weak arm for a CF? He has a bad contract, no power, and is not the overall defender Cameron is. However, he does strikeout much less. But I just dont think his contact makes up for his lack of power and not being as good a fielder as Cameron. We would be on the hook for that contract for more time than we would with Cameron. The only way it works is if we can trade a bad contract back like Bill Hall or Jeff Suppan.
  14. Ramirez just for over 10 million a year so he is young but not cheap. There is no way I would trade Braun for Garza or Lester. Garza's numbers really are not that great, at least not good enough for Braun and the same goes for Lester. Billingsley is a great strike out guy but I still would not trade him for Braun. Lincecum is really the only young pitcher I would trade for Braun and I would think long and hard about Hamels as well. I would also keep Braun over Reyes and Upton. Longoria needs one more year to prove in my mind that he isnt Troy Tulowitski. My list would include David Wright and Lincecum and I am not sure who else.
  15. Cain and Green are both starting today. Both got on their first time tonight. Green walked and Cain singled. Green singled his next time and Cain grounding out.
  16. I was listening to Mike Tirico this morning and he was talking about how cheap tickets were for the Dodgers game tonight. I just looked on StubHub and there are a lot of tickets for under $20 for tonight's game. There are some for as little as $7. I know it is a big stadium holding up to 56,000 but I found that sad.
  17. Longoria struck out once every four plate appearances this year which a lot higher than Braun did this year but just a little higher than what Braun did as a rookie. Bruan's OPS was higher both years although this year it was really close. It comes down to whether Longoria's numbers stay the same next year or if he slumps a little or gets better. A lot of guys seem to slump, and Braun's numbers did go down, but his "slumping" numbers were the same as Longoria. Both guys were hurt this year so I dont know home much injuries factor in. Braun tried to play through his injury which did affect his swing. Both plays were good in the post season, but Longoria's numbers have been better. But the playoffs in baseball are such a small sample, I don't know how much you can factor them in. I mean AROD is still the best or one of the best players in baseball even though his postseason numbers have been bad. All that said I would rather have Braun than Longoria because he has put up numbers over on more season. Now if next year Longoria puts up really good numbers again then I might have to change my mind, but if he pulls a Troy Tulo (who was bad before the injury) than I will be happy to have not traded for him.
  18. Sarfate ended the year badly so it isnt like he had a good year. He had a WHIP of 1.56 and walked 62 batters in 80 innings. His first half BAbip numbers were low the first half and when the increased toward the norm his ERA was pretty bad. I don't really know how much he would have pitched on this team down the stretch. Even after saying that I just looked at Coffey's numbers and they are not great. I just think some people saw how Sarfate started the year and missed how much he cooled down the stretch. He had control trouble again but got lucky early on.
  19. This question of who do we pay was a lot tougher last year I think. Hart struggled badly in the second half so he is not a position to be extended. Weeks has not developed as one would have hoped. Braun is locked up already. Fielder is a possibility but I don't think it will happen. That leaves Hardy. He is rumored as trade-bait but also makes sense to lock up as he is a more complete/polished and improving player than Hart or Weeks and wont demand near as much as Prince (who wouldnt take an extension deal anyway).
  20. I agree with a lot of what you said and you make a good point here. The only way we move positions for hardy is if he already getting paid. If we extend him then I think a move would work because he would be getting a raise already. I doubt they would move him without extending him.
  21. I did not think Hardy had that good of range. So, putting him at 2nd next to Prince who has very little range would be a recipe for lots of groundball hits. I think you lock up Hardy to a longer term deal and move him to 3rd. His arm would play great and his range would be good enough. Also if you sign him to a longer deal and move him the odds of him being disgruntled about it are much less because he will have gotten his money. I think his bat can definitely play at 3rd. He proved this year 25 home runs is not a fluke for him, so you would have Braun, Prince, and Hardy 3-5. Two 35 home run guys with a 25 plus guy and I think that is good. Hardy was 34th in the NL in OPS which would be respectable for a 5 hitter in mind considering you have 12 and 16 right in front of him. He also does not strikeout much. His numbers are not too far from Troy Glaus who actually just walks at a better rate than JJ. i don't think you trade him unless you know for sure Escobar is ready, but I would actually rather have JJ and Escobar on the same side.
  22. Furcal is a free agent this year so Hardy would make sense for the Dodgers. Loney's lack of power numbers could make him expendable in a Fielder trade. Fielder for Loney and an arm or something.
  23. Gwynn isnt really a great OBP guy like people would think. He is a little under a 2:1 K to BB guy. Weeks strikes out a little more but not enough to really make a difference when you actually look at Gwynn's numbers.
  24. I would agree that their rotation is a lot more than the Brewers current rotation, but it could be better. I advocate the Brewers trading for a top end pitcher and I would do the Verlander for Hardy trade in a second. However, what i have been saying is that I see no reason for Detriot to make this trade. If you take Verlander out of that rotation then I think it is a bad rotation. Detriot needs to add pitching, not subtract (unless they really think Porcello is ready to be a solid starter).
  25. Are you trying to point out that their staff is good? I was wondering because you seemed to point out a lot of their deficiencies as a staff. If they lose Verlander they are going with a staff of Bonderman, Robertson, Galarraga, Miner, and Willis (and maybe Rogers). That is a bad rotation. You dont really have a 1 or 2 guy in that rotation if you ask me. Bonderman has good stuff and Galarraga pitched well last year but it would be tough to rely on them to carry a roation. With Verlander it has potention to be a decent rotation, but to me it would be similar to us trading Sheets at the beginning of this year, which would have left us with some nice pitchers but definitely not guys to carry a staff.
