  1. On a positive note none of the teams chasing us is playing good baseball over the last ten games outside of Houston. Milwaukee is 5-5, Philly is 5-5, and St. Loius is 4-6. Houston is 9-1, however they are 6 games back with 19 games to play. If we go 9-10 they would have to go 15-4. St. Louis does not scare me. Philly is the team I worry about but they are not really playing that great right now. If we can split with them we will be in great shape.
  2. If Hardy makes his play Young is at 2B with two-out. This inning is more on the defense, but the last run was on Parra even though he should have been out of that inning.
  3. If neither Garrison nor Inman make more than a back of the rotation type impact than it really does not matter. Inman has struggled to pitch past the 5th inning in AA this year so he has set the world on fire. I do agree with the idea that we need to develop relief pitching better and I think that was addressed in this draft moreso than in the past. As for the main point of the thread. Gagne has been awful so it was a bad signing even if it was just for a year, but like so many have said there were not a lot of options out there that have turned out better. I am interested to see what is out there this year that could help us. Relief pitchers are just so hard to predict. Most people thought Riske was a good signing but he has struggled this year. Torres though not a great pitcher has been very effective, especially for what we gave up to get him. Mota has had really bad stretches but is pitching a lot better right now. But it is hard to find many bullpens that are really effective right now.
  4. 1-0 after 3. Luetge is starting off well. No runs, and 4 Ks through 3
  5. I know I would not have. CC in the 8th even at 100 pitches is better to me than Gagne. I was in a room with some other guys and even before the move was made we all thought CC was going to come back out for the 8th. They did not need to pinch hit for him so I figured he was good to go.
  6. The Cubs could do that obviously but I dont think they will spend that kind of money. It will cost good money to lock up Dempster and all indications are that they will do that. I think Wood is a free agent as well, so it will cost them a fair amount to resign their own.
  7. If we can trade one of our infielders for a number 2 guy then I am feeling better going into next year. Gallardo, young number 2 type guy like a Matt Cain, Parra, Suppan, and Bush is not a terrible rotation and the three front end guys could be with us a while. And they would be cheap. I dont agree about the Cubs being better for sure next year. Zambrano is showing signs of wearing down, Harden is a huge question mark in terms of health, they will have to use a lot of their free agency money to keep Dempster who is coming off a career year (not always the best signings), after that they have Lilly and Marquis. The Cardinals will be ready with a full year of a healthy Carpenter and Wainwright, although Lohse may be gone. If we can get a young arm in the mix our top three could be alright next year and very good the next couple years, which would leave in a good spot in the division
  8. This does feel like last year when we started losing but the Cubs were losing too, so I told myself not to worry because they were not making up ground. However, this team needs to show me a little fire and clutch hitting the next couple days. If we can get on a little role then I wont be worried but this slide seems all to familiar they just waited a lot longer this year to scare (although the Cubs series early did the same)
  9. Every team needs a scapegoat and Rickie Weeks is it for this team. Him or Ned Yost. There were a lot of guys who did not do what was needed last night, including Parra, Fielder, Hardy (had an error that lead to a run), Braun (bad K with guys on), and Cameron. However, it is easier to blame one guy, even though he was on base 4 times. He definitely hurt the team a couple times but like I said there are a lot of other people to shoulder some of this blame.
  10. This seems pretty extreme. Komatsu put up some great numbers. An OBP of .403 and a Slug of .956 all that while striking out at just 1 time every 8 PA's. I don't know what else you would want to see out of him. Dykstra struggled late in the season, but still held his own. I don't know how you can call a high school kid a dumb baseball player after 35 games, but you watched his games so I am wondering what you saw.
  11. I would rather give him innings out of the bullpen rather than starts. If we can get a nice lead give him some innings or just an inning to see where he is at.
  12. How about Gallardo for our 8th inning guy after he gets a little work in? It may have been said already in this thread but he makes a lot of sense. Right now the rotation is clicking, unless Sheets is out for an extended period of time, the bigger need is in the bullpen late in games.
  13. I agree with the Theriot dislike. He is a slap hitter who seems to get more bloop singles and ground ball hits than anyone I know. He actually reminds me of Jason Kendall that way. He seems to have a below average arm for a shortstop as well at least when I watch him. He also has a high BABIP but I dont really understand the stat a ton. Does a slap hitter usually have a higher BABIP? Other people on my list include, Zambrano, Tulowitzki, and Jeter. I don't understand the hate for Berkman either. I love the guy and wish he was a Brewer. I am also a Pujols fan, but I can see how people don't like him.
  14. If Cain is not list then can we assume that list is Brantley, Lucroy, Green, and Gillespie. That is a nice list to choose from. Like most I would like to keep Lucroy and Green. I would like to keep Brantley as well, but if he cannot play CF he losses value. Gillespie is blocked at the corners with Hart and Braun so he would be my first choice to go if he is on the list.
  15. Sheets also got honorable mention. Age and health kept him off the top 50 they said. You can get to the honorable mention link from the links provided
  16. What a great night all around for the pitchers. Jeffress looks good in his transition to AA ball. 5.2 IP, 7 K's, 1 ER. Gulin gives up no runs on 2 hits. Seidel as mentioned pitched great. Scarpetta is also off to a good start with no runs over 3 IP
  17. This is a good point, but I would not say he has been superior. If you look at their stats they are pretty much identical. Cameron has a little higher OBP and OPS, but it is a very small number. Hart has the lead in SB and even though he has K'ed a fair amount he is way below what Cameron has done in K/PA. I thank that makes it about a wash in my mind.
  18. I agree the pitching has been disappointing, but one guy who has shown something this year and has not been mentioned is Cody Scarpetta. I know he is in rookie ball, but he has put up really good numbers in his first season pitching. Put him with Ordorizzi and Lintz and that is a fun group to watch next year. Wooten and Luetge have also started out well. Throw Peralta in there along with some guys who will guys who will be looking to bounce back like Braddock and Aguilar and this group could be really good in a year or two. But like you said Maas all these guys are young so our hopes rest on Jeffress as the only guy above A-ball with top-end stuff, unless I am missing someone.
  19. I agree with a lot people's thoughts. Here are mine Shawn Spencer -Psych Dr. Cox, J.D. and Turk - Scrubs (I like all of them but Cox is my favorite) Dwight - The Office Desmond Hume - Lost
  20. The average age of a MLB player is 28 so I don't know what the average rookie age is but I would guess it is less than 26. I could be wrong. I did over exaggerate though when I said he would be on the downward slope of his career but he will be older than the average MLB player. He deserves a shot but I just dont get excited by 28 year old career minor leaguers without MLB success, however Ryan Ludwick is showing it is possible
  21. Wow. I love Ryan Braun. I admit I gave up on this game.
  22. Luetge with another nice start. 6 IP, 1 ER, 4 K's. It is nice to have some college arms pitching well this year with Wooten and Luetge looking really good. The young high school arms Ordrizzi, Lintz, and Scarpetta (who I am just acting like was in this draft) have great potential, but are obviously a little ways away.
  23. He had a rough start but remember he was coming off one of the best starts of his short career. Actually the past two games his walk numbers have been way down which I think is a sign he is growing as a pitcher
  24. Matt LaPorta went 1-4 with a three-run home run, but went 0-4 with 4 K's against Cuba. He is now 1-12 with 6 K's. Hopefully he can turn around and the hopefully the US team can turn it around as they are 1-2 to start out the Olympics
  25. Again if the Brewers would not have played as well as they recently have the Astros would be in a similar spot to the Rockies last year. The Rockies were 4.5 games out on Sept. 16 with 3 teams ahead of them. The Astros have 5 teams ahead them but it is Aug 14th so they could make a run. Now obviously what the Rockies did may never happen again but it did happen once. I agree Houston is out of it and I thought the trade was crazy when it went down, but it at least keeps the fans paying attention for a while, false hope is still hope to a fan with blinders on.
