  1. Another quick update - Hiura has regularly been playing 2nd over the last few games...barring any setbacks it wouldn't surprise me if he's doing the same thing for Biloxi later this season in AA. color me cautiously optimistic!
  2. In his postgame press conference last night Counsell said Bandy pinch hit because both Braun and Hernán Pérez (wrist injury) were unavailable. Ugh, this annoys the crap out of me - Braun's missed the last two games and looked awful at the plate on Sunday. Put him on the 10 day DL and get a bat that can at least pH up here (Choi) When you're playing with a roster that's so handcuffed your best pH option is a backup catcher that has no business on the MLB roster, moves need to be made. Probably won't happen since today's game is an earlier start and they have an off day thursday - being the Brewers, my guess is they'll retroactively put Braun on the 10day DL before Saturday's game so they can waste two more games of him being on the active gameday roster yet unavailable.
  3. It was Greinke with a 30" wide plate so the runs were tough to come by. Walking the winning run to start the 8th inning could have been avoided. True, but this season has proven that it doesn't take a 30" wide plate for an ace-caliber starter to shut this team down offensively. Can't win 'em all
  4. Definitely some bullpen moves to question, but it would also be nice to score more than once...
  5. I think I woulda rolled with Jeffress to start this 1/2 inning here...
  6. Had Gennett been able to play any other position than 2B, he wouldn't have gotten waived at the end of last year's Spring Training. It basically came down to him or Perez for the MLB roster, and Perez's versatility won the Brewers over at the time - particularly because their roster really needed someone to cover multiple positions due to lack of proven depth. Much has been made about comparing Villar to Gennett since Scooter was released, but at the time the move was made nobody questioned the decision for Villar to be the Brewers' opening day 2B in 2017. There was no contest in who was the more valued player following the 2016 season. Good for Scooter to take full advantage of his opportunity in Cincy and earn himself a nice, long MLB career that appears to be on the verge of a nice FA payday a few offseasons from now. The other thing that needs to be considered with him is he's been given the luxury of putting up #'s for a dumpster fire of a team with no immediate plans on winning. In fact he's never really been on a team that had any pressure to win and make a postseason push - closest he came was that 2014 Brewers season where they just cratered from mid-August to season's end when it counted most.
  7. https://www.mlb.com/yankees/news/yankees-second-baseman-robinson-cano-surprised-by-report-of-link-to-biogenesis-clinic/c-45492012 Quick google search netted me this. Maybe biogenesis sent her the drugs, and this lady was paid handsomely to potentially take the fall. well, that and the fact both Arod and Melky Cabrera were implicated with Biogenesis - who happened to both be extremely close to Cano on a professional and personal level, respectively.
  8. Wasn't a Cano associate linked to biogenisis a few years ago when he was still a yankee? I think they eventually cleared Cano in that instance, but could have easily been due to his associate falling on the sword and keeping their mouth shut.
  9. Hader is still on pace for about 100 IP from the bullpen this season, which based on his per game workload winds up being between 50-60 games that he'd appear in. If he continues to be used in this role, which is basically locking down late inning leads/tight games for multiple innings, preserving other late inning pen arms and giving the manager every reason to have a quick hook with starters to avoid a blowup 5th-7th inning, and giving the Brewers a vastly improved chance of winning most all games he appears in, Hader's a value that current statistical models can't accurately quantify. I'd also like to give him a legit shot at the MLB rotation if his potential value as a starter every 5th day would be higher than his current role...based on what we've seen thus far in 2018, I'm not so sure just logging more innings as a starter over fewer games he would appear in is actually more valuable.
  10. Hamels is on Heyman's list, and was one of the pitchers I want to keep an eye one as it gets closer to the trade deadline. I'm also very curious how MadBaum looks as he'll be coming off the DL soon - the Dodgers stinking so far in 2018 has unfortunately kept the entire NL west within 1 hot streak of the division lead, and that Giants team seems to have been built with the mentality of trying to give it one more go at winning in 2018 before having to dismantle the pile of declining veterans laced with anchor contracts. If the Giants find a way to crater their postseason chances before late July and MadBaum looks good, man he'd be fun to have in Milwaukee through 2019 at $12M per year. Would take a king's ransom to acquire him, but one can dream.
  11. Brewers currently sit at #18 in all of MLB in terms of 2B offensive OPS - based on this season to date I was expecting to see that ranking much lower. They happen to be dead last in MLB in terms of SS offensive OPS - not really surprised by that at all given it's been manned by a slumping Arcia and awful Sogard. 25th in OPS from the C position. 26th in OPS from LF. Rest of their positions are basically at or above league average offensively. The LF #'s surprised me until realizing that most of Braun's best offensive games have come with him as a 1B or PH, and he played extra games out there when Yelich was on the DL. I'd expect those results to improve over time with Yelich there more frequently and Braun hopefully getting hot at some point again this year. Since Stearns took away their worst offensive option at 2B/SS that CC played way too much, the middle infield offensive output has definitely shown signs of life. Pina has also been swinging a good bat, but they still have Bandy on the roster to keep the C position as an area to target improving via trade. Nottingham continues to rake at AAA but I'd just as soon leave him there for this year and improve the MLB roster with a veteran upgrade to Bandy. position-wide OPS lines for this team that are surprisingly good - only 2 games, but they are OPS-ing 1.450 from the DH position. Plus, they are 3rd overall from the PH and 1B spots (getting mileage from that glut of 1B/OF on the roster thus far). 5th overall from pitchers hitting.
  12. Just made a separate post touching on this in another thread...if it weren't for the Brewers both Darvish's and Quintana's statlines would be absolutely brutal. Specific to Quintana - the Cubs are going to regret sending Jimenez to the South Side in that trade. Sure, there's time for the pitching statlines to start matching up better with the names on the back of those jerseys - but there are definitely concerns and they have yet to really deal with a significant injury or two in that rotation which will inevitably happen and expose their lack of depth...hopefully in the midst of a long stretch of games without off days due to all their early season rainouts. Today was supposed to be an offday for them, instead they got beat by a sneaky good Braves squad with a ton of young talent on it.
  13. Jose Quintana continues to struggle pitching against anyone not wearing a Brewers uniform...meanwhile, Dylan Cease is off to an 11 K/9 start in A+, and Eloy Jimenez continues to demolish minor league competition (0.995 OPS, 0.636 SLG in AA, where he's more than 3 years younger than that league's average age). The Cubs got their WS title, but they are going to also regret losing Gleyber Torres (Hitting 0.319 as a 21 yr old Yankee) and Jimenez from their organization as part of the trades for Aroldis and Quintana.
  14. Saladino's just fine as a 1 to maybe 2 start per week option to back up 2B, SS, and 3B...he's much better defensively than Sogard, so in no way should the Brewers need Eric again. Arcia and Shaw need to essentially be everyday players, while I'm open to some sort of a platoon between Villar and Perez at 2B until they can find a better option via trade if they are so inclined. IMO Saladino's best value to the Brewers is him in Milwaukee prevents Sogard from being here, which would prompt CC to find 3-4 starts a week for him again.
  15. Maybe if they sell the Mariners on Sogard's bad luck BABIP so far this year they can trade him for three more rookie ball arms and we can complain Stearns didn't get enough in return for an established MLB vet...
  16. reading through that Lind trade thread just made me laugh! Some "highlights" from across a wide net of posts... won't know about any impact on this trade at the MLB level until at least 2022... could have just traded Suter for them... maybe it frees up payroll to go out and get Fielder or sign Chris Davis to fill that gaping 1B hole... that’s a package they should’ve traded Gennett or Segura for… missing the glory years of Doug Melvin… best trade of Melvin’s tenure was Gallardo because they got Sardinas back…(keep in mind this came soon after the Gomez trade)
  17. The last 7-10 days have turned this rotation into anything but consistent, late scratches (Anderson), DL stints (Davies/Miley), early in-game exits via injury (Miley), inconsistency (Guerra), and continued struggles with being yo-yo-ed around at the MLB level (Woodruff) have tested the 40 man roster depth on the pitching front. The big positive is overall, they've held things together pretty well, and there are options to keep it up for awhile. I do feel like Davies' shoulder is more than a minor blip, and he's going to miss a few more weeks if we are lucky. Does anyone know whether they did an MRI on it or are they just crossing their fingers it's nothing more than inflammation bugging him? Peralta should probably stay up and in the rotation until Davies returns. I'd say Burnes would be ready to take Guerra or Suter's spot should they scuffle, but that would require adding Burnes to the 40-man and dropping someone from it at a time when they don't have alot of flexibility there...although Sogard's AAA performance to date (and MLB performance previously) should make him completely expendable - particularly with Saladino around as a better option than Sogard even when Sogard is hitting over his presumed weight (~150).
  18. Prior to the last two games, perez's ops was far, far below .635, so it's not just on-field performance keeping villar on the pine when the other options for 2b had worse numbers than him prior to his apparent benching. Unsustainable babip makes no sense to try and use as a reason based on 100 plate appearances, too. Ultimately the brewers need to bring in a quality vet to improve 2b at the deadline if they are in good position in the standings. until then I just hope they luck into riding the hot hand moreso than not, whoever that ends up being.
  19. I think CC needs to keep Perez in the lineup most days at 2b given that it appears Villar is relegated to the 25th roster spot the brewers like to waste...normally that's reserved for a player with a nagging injury, but right now the 25 man appears healthy since the injured are on the dl. Perez won't crater them offensively at 2nd if he's lower in the order and he's swinging a hot bat, especially compared to the production they've gotten from there to date. I can live with his obp issues if he's at least hitting the ball. With saladino hopefully filling that utility IF role and rarely get starts at SS and 3b when arcia or shaw need an offday, these roles are much better than CC trying to get Sogard at bats as a starter 3-4 games a week. All that said, I'm still flummoxed why villar is on the outs - would be good to get the full story from the manager at some point. Has to be something aside from on field performance, maybe it's the fact he appears to be "baseball stupid" with some of the in game decisions he makes with taking extra bases or steal attempts. Whether you like or dislike him as a player, his stats this season during sporadic playing time while also being shuffled around the order aren't terrible.
  20. Full game for Hiura at 2b last night...hopefully a few weeks from now that isn't even news
  21. Never a doubt.... Yeah, do they still have the 21 fire keepers club promo going?? Someone is very happy right now if they do
  22. xFIP now 3.58, BABIP now also trending down at 0.354 after two solid May starts for Mr. Archer... He can't hit, catch, or play 2B so he's far from what the Brewers would likely target at the deadline should they want to improve their roster - but he'll likely be the subject of alot of trade rumors if he stays healthy and there are a few contending teams in need of a good starter. He'd appear to be a fit with teams like the Braves and Phillies to bolster rotation question marks on rosters that are winning now when they may not have been fully expecting to so soon.
