  1. From Matt Williams to Dusty Baker....... Lesson not learned......
  2. I would rather go with a younger guy like Perez and hope he develops a little bit of a power stroke and could OPS .700 or so (which isn't that much of a stretch, honestly) and provide at least a WAR of a bench player. Johnson hasn't even been replacement level the last 2 years.
  3. Alcides Escobar might be a decidedly mediocre player, but he is absolutely owning October. He already took the ALCS MVP, and now he's putting in a strong case for WS MVP as well.
  4. A 50 homerun guy in Korea is probably a 25-ish homerun guy here. It's a different level of competition, and some of their parks over there are pretty small. Kang hit 40 bombs last year, and hit 15 in almost a full season for the Pirates in MLB>
  5. I think (I hope......) when Braun said he would play *anywhere* that it was kind of to be taken tongue in cheek. I think he's aware that a move to 1st base is possible in the near future. In this particular context however, I think "anywhere" is exactly three positions. LF, RF, or 1B.
  6. And Braun's zero projected innings at 3B. Nevermind the fact that Braun said he would play anywhere *except* third base.
  7. Both FanGraphs and Baseball Reference think pretty poorly of Davis' defense. Enough to negate quite a bit of his offensive value. BR has him at a 0.8 overall WAR, FanGraphs was a little more generous, and rated him a 1.3 WAR. Over 150 games, he'd maybe eke out to just about a 2.0 WAR, and be a league average player between his offense, defense, and baserunning, but if the Brewers can get someone to over-pay for him based on his huge 2nd half surge, now is absolutely the time to strike.
  8. Interestingly, Steamer predicts Arcia to come out to a .683 OPS. Which (unsurprisingly) is a higher OPS (by a good margin) than they predict for Segura. We have little shot at competing, so I see no reason to start Arcia's service clock at the start of the season, but honestly, I'm not surprised that the first round of comps show Arcia this high already.
  9. So in essence, all of our starters project to be nearly identically sucky. I don't see why they'd expect to see Jimmy Nelson to take a step backwards going into his age 27 season.
  10. Interestingly....... the Dodgers finished 2nd in the NL in OPS (1st in OBP) but 8th in runs scored, and 8th by a pretty wide margin. So they already weren't scoring as many runs as they should have been. They stole 57 based and got caught 34 times, so they already are running to no purpose.
  11. Lucroy did bounce back. He had an .808 OPS in the 2nd half. Higher than his career OPS of .770, and just .030 below his "MVP caliber" season of 2014 OPS of .837
  12. A lot of articles I have read recently had suggested that this year was "world series or bust" for Mattingly. I don't care what your payroll is.....that's an absurd way of thinking. Your payroll can get you to the playoffs, but anything can happen in a 5 game series. I mean, even a 70 win team could conceivably beat a 95 win team a fair amount of the time in a 5 game stretch just out of sheer luck.
  13. http://deadspin.com/bartolo-colon-heads-to-the-locker-room-eats-it-1737655931 When I saw this headline, I literally thought they meant that he had eaten the locker room. Then I realized that they meant "eats it" as in "slang for fell down". I wouldn't have been surprised if he had actually eaten the locker room though. And before anyone says it for me....... http://i.imgur.com/U7Ghu2s.gif?noredirect
  14. The Rockies always have a good offense. They're always at least a few pitchers away from contending though, and then some. Coors is where good pitchers go to die. K-Rod might give up 20 homers in 65 innings in Coors. EDIT: In the last 7 years, the Rockies rank in the NL in runs scored is 1-1-2-3-2-3-2. So they are at worst, top 3. They have finished .500 twice. Last year they lead the NL in runs, and won 68 games. To say they are "a few pitchers away" from being an excellent team is disingenuous. They will always score runs because of their park. Jean Segura could probably go there and hit .300/.330/.450 and club 15-20 homers. But pitchers absolutely can't pitch there. Point being..... Peralta just came off a really.....let's face it, a really bad year, and K-Rod is an aging reliever who gives up a lot of homeruns, and isn't exactly cheap. They aren't the types of pieces I'd be looking at if I were giving away a top 50 slugger.
  15. His WAR the last 4 years has not reached 2 in any individual year. 2.0 is an average starting player. Saying he's capable of being an average player "and more" is a bit of a stretch, when he's going to be past the prime age for athletes. I would not be opposed to signing Murphy if he were literally the last piece of the puzzle for a team looking to contend *right now*, but he's not. This is a team in the early to mid stages of a rebuild. We won't contend next year. 2017 is FAR from a sure thing. We don't know what we have in Arcia, Phillips or anyone else that hasn't even hit AAA yet. None of those guys are "can't miss" prospects, and spending money on mid-tier, aging free agents who are at best, average players makes almost zero sense. You can't even say "well we can flip him for more prospects if it doesn't work out!", because that doesn't work. It didn't work with Lohse. Or Garza. Or Wolf, or almost anyone else. Signing guys to use as trade bait later is a fool's hope. Sign them when you need them. And we don't need the Daniel Murphys of the world quite yet.
  16. I sometimes think people believe the Dodgers are just adding payroll to add payroll. Braun has a lot of baggage right now (that has nothing to do with his steroid scandal). He has the back/intercostal injuries that have been hounding him. The thumb injury. He's now on the wrong side of 30 and while his contract isn't about to get "super expensive" it's also not exactly cheap for a guy who's now got a pretty significant injury history in the past few years. Braun is no longer a "mega-superstar" that he was 3-4 years ago. He's not in his prime, and he's not going to be a 7-8 WAR player like he used to be. He could give 2-3-4 more seasons of being a 4-5 WAR player or so, but that comes with the caveat that he may miss significant time as well. He's not going to be a coveted target.
  17. Murphy is 30, doesn't take walks, hits for very little power, is not a plus defender, and is about to get expensive. Every hallmark of a "just say no" type guy. His WAR hasn't been above 2.0 (a league average starter) the last four years. These are the type of players our new GM should be avoiding, not signing.
  18. I'm honestly surprised the Royals made it into the top half of payroll, but they have added a lot of "veteran" type players. Astros and Pirates were in the bottom half of payroll as well.
  19. It's a shame, because this has been a fantastic playoffs so far. Great games, great series, high drama, and awesome bat flips.
  20. That Toronto crowd was the loudest i've ever heard in a baseball stadium through a TV at least. Helps obviously though that the roof was closed. What a game to watch. I became a Toronto fan before the playoffs started and then decided bet money on them to beat Texas. Sure wasn't looking good after the first two games, thought they were likely toast. Glad i'm no Texas fan. First they lose a World Series when in back to back innings vs the Cardinals, Texas was only one strike away from winning and then today three straight errors on ground balls. Some serious gut punch losses. Not only that, but Andrus is out there for his glove. First he boots the grounder. Then Moreland makes a bad throw to 2nd, but it wasn't off line or anything, it was a throw Andrus *could* have handled, but he just couldn't make a play on. Then a feed to third on the bunt that he just clanked off the heel of his glove. Just a complete disaster. This is definitely a game where the Rangers, and especially Andrus will have to look back and say "woulda shoulda coulda".
  21. Somehow I don't think the Dodgers are ready to dump an .850 OPS outfielder for a guy who was one of the worst starters in the entire league last year. Ethier is a bad contract, but he was almost a 3 WAR player, so it's not like he doesn't provide something to the team he's on. Yes, the Dodgers have a glut of OF, but so do we, and getting rid of a bad contract to take on another big contract at a position that's not a need doesn't make a lot of sense. Crawford was actually negative WAR last year, and is owed more than Ethier.
  22. I would rather wait and hold onto Garza and see if he can regain any value. Prying another dead contract away from someone in what is likely to be a lost season is little more than a lateral move. If there's no point in it for us, what point is there for the White Sox? We're most likely not going to contend this year. We don't need a LH hitting 1st baseman. I'd bet that Matt Clark is more likely to out-value LaRoche anyways. The more likely scenario is that Garza pitches better in 16 than he did in 15, and could actually net a low A nugget that doesn't cost a 12 million dollar contract in return.
  23. I know the Jake is 20 years old, but that can't be the problem. It's a nice park and a decent location. (As mentioned) it's been recently renovated, and it has plenty of amenities. It's what........ 6 years older than Miller Park? Kind of sad if we're getting to a point where these structures are only good for 20-30 years now. Turner field was used for what.......20 seasons? I know it's a completely different sport, but the Bradley Center was built in 88, and has been obsolete for quite a while already.
  24. I guess I hadn't realized how horrible the attendance has gotten in Cleveland. The last 3 years they've won 92, 85, and 81 games, and they're still drawing less than 18 thousand fans per game. You can't live off of the attendance from the mid 90's forever.
  25. This is what's going to happen. And then people will complain (and perhaps rightfully so). After watching the video from the 1st base angle, I firmly believe Utley had more than enough time to not dive into/tackle Tejada. Semantics being what they are, we can argue all day about what his intentions are. What can't be in dispute is that he didn't slide into 2nd base. He committed an ugly act on a national stage that's going to force the higher ups to say *sigh*....."let's make a rule change" and people are going to grouse about it much like the Buster Posey rule. Is it good for baseball? That's very debatable. The "break up slide" is part of the game. It's a strategic play that has a place in the game. Unfortunately this play puts it under a microscope now. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.
