I thought the waivers were only for players with options remaining but enough service time to have to pass through waivers. That for Nelson to join Nashville he must be DFA'd. And I would think Jack Z would love to have a LH 1B/LF bat in AAA for injury concerns (when you have Branyan and Griffey...) and it would give Nelson a great shot at real playing time, something less likely in Milwaukee.
I don't think Gwynn is a serious option. You look for a veteran free agent or perhaps Cole Gillespie after he gets some time in AAA. But right now is no reason to really do anything.
He's going to be in New York to replace Wang by all indications. Hughes is a 22 year old with great stuff. He's still a top pitching prospect. Kennedy is the one with a lower ceiling, is 24 and really buried on the depth chart. The Yankees really have to move him. All that said ARod is supposed to ready to go in about 2 weeks.
It will likely happen the next time there is two bouts of expansion, one of the main causes of home run booms. If there is an end to the "steroid era," it won't be hitters that will really show it, it will be the breaking down of pitchers.
I'm not saying the Brewers could or even should have got him. I'm saying the Mets are really overpaying for a guy based on "Stuff" and a low ERA in 2007 that was a combination of low BABIP and giving up lots of unearned runs. The projected difference between Odalis Perez and Oliver Peerz is slight but one's an NRI and the other is making $12m guaranteed.
The bullpen is not in that bad of shape even if Parra has a short start. McClung only threw 3 pitches yesterday, DiFelice could likely give an inning, Stetter could be brought in for an inning and Hoffman can give you an inning.
Coming from behind due to an amazing hot streak to just nip Cameron, Ryan Braun has become the first Brewer to be worth 1 win this season! http://www.fangraphs.com/winss.aspx?team=Brewers&pos=all&stats=bat&qual=0&type=6&season=2009&month=0
