  1. The Baltimore metro area is 2.6m The Milwaukee metro area is 1.7m. Baltimore is not small market. There are basically 2 small MLB markets, Milwaukee and Kansas City. Then go up a half a million before you get to Pittsburgh. And if I have to hear about the 3.6m Twins cities called small again I'll scream.
  2. McClung was better than Suppan last year, sure. But there is nothing to expect that to continue. Again if there is something physically off about Suppan it might make sense but they project to be about the same pitcher if both start.
  3. And in what universe in Baltimore small market? And the reason "small" market teams can't compete is because Selig spent the 90s getting taxpayer funds for stadiums instead of nationalizing broadcast rights.
  4. The one player they could have used to get stuff for Peavy they dumped in DeRosa. Who else on that team is extraneous and has value?
  5. McClung's batting line against gives a good idea of the story: As a starter:.248/.342/.393 As a reliever: .235/.346/.336 AS you can see McClung walked more as reliever but gave up more home runs as a starter. The OBP against is bad in either case because he walks so many. There's little there to say either role stands out.
  6. I though Bando's extension offer wasn't really much of extension though. Maybe I'm wrong but I thought it really only would have added one year since McDonald was under contract for 1997 and had an option in place for 1998. So really it a slight raise and one additional year. Unless McDonald knew he was going to blow out his arm, trying to get a better deal than that isn't that foolish. Sort of like Sheets turning down arby. If he thought he was that badly injured he wouldn't have turned it down.
  7. McClung and Coffey are both pitchers who were hot in September but neither are very good. McClung's BB/9 was 4.70 last year. That stinks. I don't think McClung forgot how to pitch, he never has pitched that well.
  8. I'm not sure its a downgrade, just not a significant upgrade to ignore the fact that Suppan is making $12.5m. Suppan is likely about 0-1 win above replacement. The Brewers have no one better. Unless theres something like a significant loss of velocity Suppan might as well pitch.
  9. Suppan and McClung kill you in different ways leading to the same result. Suppan allows too many balls in play and has become home run vulnerable. McClung walks tons of batters and will be at 100 pitches by the 5th inning.
  10. Its not like the Brewers have a ton of other options. McClung isn't any better. DiFelice isn't going to get the opportunity. Capuano suffered a set back. Unless Wright or Green break out, Suppan is all there is until a possible midseason move. And even then there is likely to be at least some minor injury to someone else requiring him to start. Suppan is going to pitch 160-180 innings this year barring a significant injury. As to Hall being off the line, I didn't see that play but its important to remember defensive positioning is based upon the pitcher pitching a hitter a certain way. If the pitcher misses his spots the defense will be out of position.
  11. Bush in relief not working--wow its like every single other time he's pitched in relief. He should have started this game not come in at the 7th.
  12. Bedard won't cost that much. His injury issues make him more Harden than Sabathia. Beltre isn't likely worth it at midseason.
  13. This is where the problem comes in. You seem to think an error on a ball hit to a player is a much worse than a player not getting to a ball the average defender gets to. To me they are exactly the same. I care about the defender getting outs, not if the non outs come from bobbling a ball or inability to move to his left.
  14. I wouldn't be surprised if Sabathia has a pretty down year. He threw 253 innings last season. I don't care who you are, unless your name is Livan Hernandez thats scary for the next season. That said a down year for Sabathia could still be a sub 4 ERA
  15. They are only one pitcher if you expect your pitcher to throw 300 innings. Sheets threw 198 innings, Sabathia threw 130 for Milwaukee. Yo might match Sheet's skill but likely for 10% less innings. Its a big deal.
  16. Yankee Stadium wasn't "Yankee Stadium", it was a 1970s ballpark built at the same place as Yankee Stadium.
  17. Macpherson is a worse version of Branyan. He doesn't have Branyan's plate discipline. McPherson will hit .235with an OBP of like.290 while Branyan's would be like .320. I still think McPherson had a chance to be something (not great but solid starter) but was stuck in absolutely the wrong organization.
  18. He's calling for the end of Wrigley field because the clubhouse isn't luxurious enough http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=ap-zambrano-wrigley&prov=ap&type=lgns
  19. Coffey's FIPs: 4.07 3.89 6.02 4.97 Maybe he gets his home run rate down but I'm skeptical that after 2 bad years he'll be decent again.
  20. Coffey-7 good innings does not a career make But most likely DiFelice gets optioned down
  21. That's a producer's screw up. The announcer almost certainly doesn't prepare his own research
  22. I just don't see why the Brewers would be interested unless they would allow Hart to back up CF. Nelson projects about the same, would be Brewer property for the next three years at minimum salary, and has a much higher upside.
  23. You do realize Nixon was released some time ago right? If you mean Nelson, Nelson is actually younger than Gwynn and was a top prospect before his injury. And since Gwynn would need to be added to the 40 man and can't be sent back down without waivers he's more than a phone call away.
  24. They did start playing the best player which is why Hardy went from a starter to a bench player by mid season. For all the talk of being patient with Hardy, he was sat down frequently starting the end of May.
