Which is why the Giants had to give away all their wins when they admitted they stole signals... Steroids were used to build muscle true, but they were used to keep pitchers healthy which can explain the huge depression in runs.
New York teams don't really care about injuries either. Pedro and Pavano when not pitching just faded away because their salaries didn't make or break the team.
If it has to do with what MLB defines as illegal why is this a discussion? McGwire never played when its was illegal by MLB. And it only became illegal due to Bonds. As to these players, besides Maris' hair falling out we have pitchers admitting that steroids were injected to keep them going. Nolan Ryan using steroids would be the easiest guess.
Whats weirder: that Caldwell isn't recognized for what he did, that anyone votes for Bill Schroeder, that Yost got 8 votes, that Bill Castro got 12 votes or that Sal Bando actually has a positive vote total?
Yes good. Not sure whats hard to see about that. He was worth about 3 wins above replacement including his defense making him about 1 win above average.
Last 2 years? Weeks was good in 2007. Again with the idea of Weeks sucking in 2007, I thought that one was finally dispelled. And he was basically average last year. Cheap average players just aren't that easy to replace especially since the Brewers have no real internal options at this point. Maybe if they move Green but he's still at least two years out.
If Hardy signs long term it will likely involve a no trade clause (the Red Sox pretty much made sure of that for most below market contracts with the Arroyo trade) and a promise to play SS. Meaning Escobar would be traded since he doesn't really fit in elsewhere.
Shouse may still be abck but the Brewers thought process is most likely that they can afford $1.5-2m for a LOOGY when they already have Stetter. I think people are really overestimating what Kapler is expected to bring. His BABIP last season was .331 vs a career of .301 and his ISP last year was .197 vs a career of .152. Add in his large injury risk and he isn't some great deal. I do like him as a 5th OFer since unlike most he can hit a little but at the price the Brewers would be willing to pay they would ahve a lot of competition for his services.
People need to keep in mind that Hardy only scores really well in one area arbitrators tend to look at, home runs. He "only" hit .283 and had less than 100 RBI. Add in his low base from last year and this isn't too far out of range. It also likely didn't help Hardy that Furcal signed for $10m per year.
Gillespie has more value to the Brewers hitting AAA pitching than sitting i Milwaukee doing nothing. Where Nelson is already 26 and so has little trade value, Gillespie has another full year of "prospect status" in him and his trade value can still be there.
Actually after Cameron leaves Cain will likely be in CF. Getting Swisher would most likely mean either Hart or Fielder will likely be gone in 2010 (assuming Cain doesn't fall flat in AAA). Swisher is a solid RFer which is valuable. I'd still rather hold out for Kennedy but Swisher is a much better return than Cabrera.
