  2. Rosemary Gernetzke, aka Rosemary Gernette and Rosemary Ross, died back in May at age 81. She and her husband Howard Gernetzke were TV fixtures in Wausau and Milwaukee from the 1950s into the 1990s. "Howard and Rosemary" hosted the noon talk show on Milwaukee's channel 12 for 17 years. Ross and Gernette were both professional names. She became Rosemary Ross in Wausau when her husband was on one channel while she was doing commercials on all three channels. The name Gernette came about when channel 12 refused to let Howard use the name Gernetzke. Here's a video where Howard and Rosemary are interviewed by Jim Peck for the Wisconsin Broadcasting Museum: http://www.wisconsinbroadcastingmuseum.org/memory-salon/howard-rosemary-gernette/
  3. We never hear officially about waivers because they're not announced. Sometimes, reporters get their hands on names, though. I'd assume that Garza cleared.
  4. I was at Woodard's debut. They swept the doubleheader that day. That was the first of two doubleheaders on consecutive days vs. the Blue Jays. The Brewers swept all four games.

  6. The Rangers have signed Gomez to a minor league contract. The plan is for him to start out at Round Rock, although GM Jon Daniels "expects to have him in the majors in a hurry." Rangers' agreement with outfielder Carlos Gomez heats up in-state rivalry with Astros
  7. Positional flexibility is cool, provided that the player provides enough offense and defense to pull it off. The act of posting lineups in these threads has made me notice the fact that good teams frequently have decent players who are shuffled around the field. Of course, I'm not going to apply the word "decent" to Elmore. In his case, positional flexibility can be a ticket to an occasional Major League roster spot.
  8. Strikeouts are a bad indicator of a lack of plate discipline. Sometimes, they're a side effect of good plate discipline. It's never a surprise when players who walk a lot also strike out a lot. Look at Yuni as an example of bad plate discipline. He rarely struck out because he'd swing early in the count, make weak contact, and pop or ground out. And then there's Chris Carter. I don't know how his numbers stack up this year. But when he was acquired, we were told that the hole in his game was swinging at and missing pitches in the strike zone… not out of it. Obviously, if a player doesn't swing at pitches in the zone, he's going to have called strikes instead. Missing pitches in the zone wouldn't be a discipline issue. I'd say that bad plate discipline involves a low number of pitches per plate appearance and a bad OBP because if it.
  9. The reporters are asking Counsell the wrong questions. I want to know what the deal was with the umpires preventing Villar and Anderson from talking. Then again, if FSWI didn't cut off the news conference before it ended, maybe we would have heard one of them ask about it.

  11. Fixed. Either a moderator or the person starting the thread can edit the title.
  12. Brent Suter's contract selected, will start tomorrow in Seattle Starting a new topic with this info so we can give Suter the honor of his own thread.
  13. The two catchers who came from the D'Backs were Chad Moeller and Johnny Estrada. Karl preceded them both.
  14. That's not the kind of success that a team can celebrate if he is being presented to their fans as the top and current representative of a quality minor league system. That's an important point. Maybe it isn't fair to pin these high expectations on him. But the team and the media are doing it. Let's hope that there's good reason for all the talk despite the fact that some of us here are expressing varying degrees of skepticism.
  15. The Brewers are on a pace to break the National League record by two strikeouts but would fall short of the Major League record by three. NL Record: 2010 Diamondbacks, 1,529 strikeouts AL and Major League Record: 2013 Astros, 1,535 strikeouts The Brewers have struck out 1,134 times in 120 games. Over 162 games, that would translate to 1,530.9 strikeouts.
  16. Title IX was part of it, but in 1991, the athletic program was in debt and struggling to make ends meet. The financial situation is a lot better now.
  17. In Chicago yesterday, I encountered a couple of motorcyclists who split lanes. Traffic was really slow. At times, I was driving in first gear, which is really unusual when you're moving at a steady speed. At any rate, I was taken aback, but I wasn't freaked out. The lane-splitters were within 10[space][/space]mph of the speed of the other vehicles. I believe traffic was moving at about 15–20[space][/space]mph at the time, and they were likely going 25-30. It may have helped that they passed on my left rather than on my right. It also may have helped that I saw one of them in my rear-view mirror beforehand. The driver was struggling to keep his vehicle upright. Still, as we determined, the practice is illegal in 49 states. Soon thereafter, a law enforcement vehicle was working his way around the traffic jam and eventually was driving in the distress lane. I wonder if he was going after the lane-splitters.
  18. When you compare Escobar and Arcia, there's definitely a similarity between their minor league offensive numbers. I don't think Alcides' numbers would have predicted a Major League OBP below .300, though. And I don't think it's right to suggest that because Escobar's numbers fell to that degree, it'll also happen to Arcia. But I'm fine with the idea that Alcides could represent Orlando's floor. Putting this all in perspective, Orlando wasn't a top draft pick (as he wasn't drafted), and he was signed for a $95,000 bonus at a time when teams could spend as much as they wanted on international free agents. I don't think he's required to do much at all to be termed a "success."

  21. We saw a lot more of Yuni on contending teams than we've seen of Elmore on a non-contending team.
  22. I'm pretty much on with TheCrew07's assessment back in post 217. I don't get the offensive comparisons to Escobar. Alcides is pretty deficient on offense. I see no reason to believe that Orlando will be deficient. After 14 games in the Majors, I'd rather rely on the larger sample that his Minor League numbers offer.
