  5. Over the past month or so, we've been doing some spring cleaning here on the board. Some documents have been moved or renamed. Also, to reduce stickies, some items have been added to the row of links above the discussion area. Here are screen captures of the links. On most board pages: http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a244/casey1992/boardpics/bfnet/mainbar2.png On Major League Forum pages: http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a244/casey1992/boardpics/bfnet/mlbbar2.png On In-Game Thread Forum pages: http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a244/casey1992/boardpics/bfnet/igtbar2.png A bit about the threads... Fan Forum Etiquette is the document formerly known as the Rules of Conduct. Except for references to its new name, its content hasn't changed. Fan Forum Etiquette is stickied here in Issues. 6. My guess is, that management would then say "The player was not available to us for 10 days, due to the player's own behavior. The team should not have to pay the player for 8 of those days." Teams have been known to pay players during their suspensions when they disagree with the decision handed down by the commissioner's office. The team and player could very easily find themselves on the same side if it's something like a suspension for throwing at a hitter.
  7. If you're of European descent, it's often pretty easy to go way far back like that. Church records contain a lot of information. You just have to figure out where you tie in. After that, you'll likely find that someone else has done the work. It's not so easy if your ancestors come from another continent. For instance, my sister in law is Chinese; she only has information on ancestors that were born in the United States. Anyway, I wanted to offer a hint about www.familysearch.org. Its searches are in frames. If you want to bookmark them, you need to break them out of the frame. In Firefox, you'd right-click anywhere in the window. Then in the "This Frame" submenu, you'd choose "Show Only This Frame," "Open Frame in New Window," or "Open Frame in New Tab." EDIT: familysearch.org has fixed the frame issue. Search results can now be bookmarked in a "normal" fashion.
  8. I'm not taking DM's comments at full price, homer. If you choose to do so, that's your decision. In this case, Doug's comments about Escobar make too much sense. It's not like the time he said he "wasn't inclined" to trade Lyle Overbay.
  9. I haven't figured out if this site is totally free or if just part of it is, but here goes: Ancestor Search | Genealogy Search Engines One thing that the site has is a cousins calculator. You can use it to see how you're related to descendants of a common ancestor. They actually got the calculator here: Mother of All Cousins Calculators. It has the code to include the calculator if you happen to be listing your genealogy in web page format. If one of your ancestors is well known, you might be able to find some of his or her descendants via sources as simple as Wikipedia. If an exact relationship is listed, you can plug yourself and this person into the calculator to see how you're related. As an example, I'm both 8th cousins 4 times removed and 9th cousins 2 times removed to Senator John Kerry. (That's provided that I remember my exact relationship to our common ancestors; I might be one "great" off. My dad has the book. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif) Having more than one relationship with a person isn't a surprise. A genealogy at my dad's house lists me as his cousin two different ways. While I haven't figured that out, I do know that I'm a 1st cousin 4 times removed to two of my 2nd great grandparents; they were first cousins when they were married. Here's a question I'm not finding an answer to: what's a double great grandparent? I see internet references saying that so and so is "double 5th great grandfather of." Would that be a case where you can trace yourself back to a great grandparent two different ways? (I can do that above; my 2nd great grandparents share a set of grandparents.)
  10. Yeah, I have a 1/8" board I use under it when working with my laptop on my lap. I use a piece of 1/4" plexiglass. It slides right into the bag next to the computer. Around the house, I usually have the computer on a "breakfast in bed" tray. I had it explained to me recently that "laptops" aren't meant for use on laps. That's why no manufacturer actually calls these machines "laptops." Menotti80 is describing a change in behavior, though. I'd go with the dirt theory that others have mentioned.
  11. If it'll make you feel better, this list of 100 has "Dyn-o-mite" at #12 and "Whatchoo talkin' 'bout, Willis?" at #8.
  12. Even though 5.5 pounds doesn't sound like much, I still find my 15.4 inch MacBook Pro to be heavy at times. The screen is nice and roomy, however, and I like that. One thing that you'd have going for you if you choose the MacBook is the Spaces feature. That allows you to spread your work around and should do a lot to offset the smaller screen size. Unfortunately, with whatever you choose, you sacrifice screen size for weight and portability; and you sacrifice weight and portability for screen size. I don't know how helpful we can be in knowing which factor is more important for you.
  13. While the post above is somewhat of a fit in this discussion, note that posts containing full lineups belong in the designated lineup thread. There's no lineup thread designated right now. With Gerut's acquisition, it might be a good time to start one.
  14. This topic is in-game thread material.
  15. Those all look like great dogs in the pictures. Still, methinks Tyson qualifies as our board mascot. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v638/danzig6767/DOGGGGGYYYMay18069.jpg
  16. He probably meant to create a single "happy youngster" tag but didn't catch the trick for doing it. (You need to put a comma after the two words.) I've changed the tag to "fanissues," but not because "happy youngster" would have been objectionable. It's simply that Yuku has a 100 tag per forum limit, so we have to economize somewhat. "fanissues" covers all topics of this genre. It's no big deal for mods to change things around to stay under this limit. FYI, ML forum tagging information is located in the first reply of the MLB Forum FAQ.
  17. I think it speaks a lot about you that you don´t see a problem with what you do. Please avoid ad hominem comments. They're condescending and unnecessary to make the point at hand.
  18. Yeah, you always have to separate out the cost of items that can be useful on a new machine. The USB card would also be transferable should you buy another desktop with PCI slots.
  19. Earned runs is definitely a fallible stat. The scenarios brewerjamie15 and jeffyscott describe illustrate issues involved. That's why saber people are interested in perfecting stats like FIP. By addressing how many runs would "normally" be scored given a certain number of Ks and BBs, a better picture can hopefully be painted. The other issue with earned runs is that defense does affect it. If a player doesn't touch a ball, even though an average defender would have gotten to it, no error is charged. The runner reaches base due to poor defense rather than poor pitching, yet, the pitcher is charged with the earned run should he score. Of course, the competence of the official scorer comes into play, too. Over large samples, however, flaws with the earned run stat will hopefully "even out" a bit, making it more accurate. Adding to what Russ says, there's value to "quick and dirty" stats, provided they're not totally abused. Ease of use is nice. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Regarding the quality start stat itself, I think there might be less objection to it had it been given a different name.

  22. Another place to look for memory is Data Memory Systems. You can add USB ports cheaply by adding a card. They're all over the place on eBay. Here's an example.
  23. if half of what was sad about Happy was said about even a guy like Zambrano, the thread would be locked and bans would be issued. The slippery moderating slope here is striking the balance between Happy the celebrity and Happy the member. Brewerfan's tolerance for condescension is much greater when it's directed toward a celebrity than it is when directed toward a member. There'd be much greater tolerance for condescending tone toward a Carlos Zambrano than there would be for condescension toward a Brewerfan member. Actually, under normal circumstances, we wouldn't be discussing something controversial involving a member at all--unless said member brought it up. So the balance seems to be this: the topic is still open for discussion because it involves Happy the celebrity. Tolerance for condescension is based on Happy being a member. Because Happy is inviting comments on both sides of the issue via his blog, I have to believe that he'd prefer that this thread remain open. However, please do note that since Peavey's admonition this morning, five posts have been hidden. We don't like to hide material, but in this case, it's a way to keep the thread up and running. Also note that Peavey's request was the third time a moderator commented in this thread about name calling and such. Please keep in mind that we can't keep doing that forever.
  24. Micro$oft Word makes me feel so totally unproductive. I waste so much time trying to undo all the things it tries to do automatically in order to allegedly save me some work.
