  1. I'm in favor of the statue. I owe a lifetime of baseball fandom (since that first team in 1970) to Bud Selig. There have been LOTS of rocky roads along the way, but he's the only reason we have a team at all.
  2. I went there from 1980-85 and I think the legend had it that he lived in Tutt Hall. Though, honestly, my memory could have faded on that one.
  3. I'm a Brewers fan who will be attending this year's National Sports Collectors Convention this year in Baltimore. The convention is August 4-8. Not sure when I'll be there, but it should be fun. I like Baltimore and the area.
  4. Here is the JSOnline link to the article where I got my figures: http://www.jsonline.com/news/statepolitics/83000147.html The $30 million figure was made up by me, as I don't see how they could possibly find 22,500 fares per week, considering the $40-66 roundtrip fee. If they don't get that many riders, then the annual subsidy has to go up. . .so I pulled $30 million out of the air. It could be their estimated $7.5 million, or it could be way more than that. Even at the low price of $40 per roundtrip, it's not going to work for commuters. Do you know anyone that's going to spend $800 per month PLUS taxis/buses/parking to go back and forth to Madison? It's an exceedingly expensive model not even counting the initial $813 million.
  5. $823 million for 80 miles? That's over $10 million per mile. Obscene. They project the ticket fee to be between $40 and $66 round trip--AND 1.17 million riders in the first year. First off, how can that be possible? 22,500 fares per week? That's a laughable overestimate. AND, those fees and those riders won't be enough to fund the ongoing operating costs. That's going to cost taxpayers a minimum of $7.5 million per year in subsidies. As if they're aren't already wasting transportation dollars, take $7.5 million (probably closer to $30 million) out of the budget for road construction and repair, and tell me that's not going to result in 3rd world highways. If you're married, with two kids, how often are you going to drop $200 just in transportation costs to take a train ride to a town 80 miles away?
  6. This is a huge waste of money. Many of the people who support it are thinking about how convenient it would be for them to use on an occasional basis--to go to a football game or baseball game, etc. These trains will run 7 days a week, and there's no guarantee that they will operate around the schedule of a sports team, let alone drop you off near any stadiums. And are you sure there will be a train leaving Milwaukee after the game is over? There simply aren't enough people in Wisconsin to merit high speed rail. We currently have a network of buses that often drive around empty, showing us clearly what our appetite is for mass transit.
  7. If he gets 50 major league at bats this year, I'll be surprised. I think he's done, but would love to be wrong.
  8. I wonder if he were diagnosed, if he suffered from Post Tramatic Stress Disorder from his time in WWII. Such a brilliant guy, and yet, seemingly so miserable in his isolation. I'm as grouchy as the next guy, but he took it to an unreachable level. And while Catcher in the Rye remains a terrific book, he followed it up with so very little. Congrats to him on making it to 91, though most of those years seemed to have been spent unhappily.
  9. That boat looks awesome! Years ago, it was a pretty big deal when Dennis Connor and the Stars and Stripes and Buddy Melges were involved. ESPN devoted a lot of air time to those races. I think I could get into it again, particularly if it's in HD.
  10. That's a stunning story. Best wishes to this kid, and hopes that he doesn't have any regrets. ------------------------------------------------ Reading about this makes me think of Billy Sunday. . . Despite being a huge celebrity in his life, his story is largely lost in today's times. A star baseball player in the 1880s, he quit mid-career to follow his faith, and went on to become the most influential evangelist in the country. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_Sunday
  11. BHF--I'm interested in the chair and will pay your asking price, in case you get no other offers. I can pick it up anywhere in SE Wisconsin in June, but will pay now. Let me know. . .
  12. Brennan's in Brookfield has awesome curds, though they are not frozen.
  13. Did he invent the vomity smell that jumps out of the can, the moment the opener pierces the top? While I enjoyed them as a kid, I must say I'm grateful that my palate has evolved. Plus, it seems the orangey-red residue of the sauce was much harder to clean away than is the case with most jarred pasta sauces. Though I suppose in death, he deserves more than my mean-spirited criticism of his claim to fame. Farewell Mr. Goerke. You did bring joy to my childhood, as Spaghetti-O night was a treat for sure.
  14. I saw a late teens/early twenties guy this afternoon in Singapore's Orchard Road mass transit station wearing a Brewers Sabathia 52 player tee. He didn't catch my eye, but I was wearing my khaki cap with the blue Brewers logo. There were no other MLB logos among the several hundred other transit riders. We're taking over.
  15. We were back in Wis for a month at Christmas, and I had a chance to watch late night television for the first time in a few years, and I was struck at how dumb, unfunny and predictible most of it was. Letterman, Leno, Conan. . .all pretty much dreck. It seems that they all are coasting on their reputations.
  16. A little self indulgence here. . .After a very nice Christmas and New Year vacation back home in SE Wisconsin, we were treated to a hearty snowfall, but no problems getting to the airport, no significant delays getting off the ground, and a fairly quick layover in Newark as we head back to equatorial Singapore for another stretch of 5-6 months. And to cap it off, my youngest sister had a healthy baby girl today. . . Life is good! Best wishes, Wisconsin. . .see you again soon.
  17. I'm reminded of Jim Palmer's attempted comeback in 1991, as a reliever with the O's. He was already in the HOF at the time, and it seemed like a pretty sincere effort, though he got lit up in Spring Training, and hung them up for good. Take away the steroids and McGwire sems like a guy worth rooting for. . .it's just that we'll neer know how much of his career was authentic and how much of it was ill-gotten. As for LaRussa, he just likes to stir things up, and for a mid-winter random day, this adds a little interest to the off-season. We'll see if it becomes anything during the season.
  18. Great job, BREWCREW5! When sewing the jersey to the matting, does the stitch go around the whole thing? Or are there strategically placed tacks to hold it in place? I just got a jersey authenticated by MEARS, and will be having it done in the coming months. Not sure if I'll go the DIY route, or have it done at a frame shop. I have had a number of vintage felt pennants done over the years, and the framers just use a few tacks (of similar fishing line thread) to hold the pennant in place. I'm concerned that the stitching around an entire jersey would cause damage. . .not sure if my fears are warranted.
  19. One of my favorite players of this era. First ballot, unless something comes out that disturbs the writers.
  20. My ballot would be: Alomar Blyleven Raines Lee Smith Blyleven is justified in his being torqued off for not being elected. That one really is an injustice. It's odd now for me, being in my late 40s to see guys who are now getting onto the ballot, whose careers have been fully spent within my own adulthood. Hall of Famers used to seem so distant and accomplished. Now guys are getting elected who are younger than me! Another thing to complain about, I guess. . .
  21. I worked as a nightclub DJ from 1982 through 1988. I used Technics 1200s then, and have pieced together a DJ kit in my basement recently, also using 1200s. In both phases of life, I used Stanton 680s, with a pretty heavy setup. Both then, and now, I use the Technics standard issue pressed felt slipmats. I find them perfectly balanced between slippery and grabby. I never lose a groove, and if my mixes are sucky, it's all my fault. I suppose it's like a guitar or a game controller or anything where you develop a touch or comfort level with one piece of equipment. Others are probably more comfortable using other stuff, but I learned how to mix with these, so I stuck with them. Most of my recent gear purchases have been with Pro Sound & Stage Lighting. . . Here's the mats that I use, though mine have a different graphic on them. . . http://www.pssl.com/Technics-Slipmat-Swirl-Pair
  22. Awesome story Bikeage77. . .That stuff will have value to you far beyond market value. I picked up a few things at auction over the past couple of months, and was finally able to see them in person. . . An old Brewers team issued Christmas card featuring elves and Barrelman A 1976 Sixto Lezcano bat Some 1969 Topps Football cards to fill in some holes in my set (16 more to go) A Tommy Harper signed ball A 1970 wirephoto of Marty Pattin and the prize item, an unused 1970 Opening Day ticket. Good stuff. . .
  23. My snowblower didn't start this morning. It wasn't deep, but it was heavy. My back will be sore on Christmas morning. . . Maybe 3 inches of very wet.
  24. Congrats to the Warhawks from this 1985 grad! Not sure how the program is received now, but way back when, it was strange to hear anyone planning to attend a game, and attendance was maybe a few hundred. Though they were also not playing for any kind of championship outside of the WSUC, which they never won.
  25. I have used Fast Frame in Brookfield and have been very happy with their work and prices. I'm going there sometime in the next week to drop off a couple of vintage pennants. I'm not into nameplates at all, and have never used them. I just use conservation glass and acid free matting, and a simple black satin frame. Check out the Fast Frame website for a $25 coupon. If you start using them, don't be surprised to see $40 coupons arrive in the mail.
