  1. Piccione is right, if Peavey was in Milwaukee, I'd expect his road ERA to continue to be 3.70, but his home ERA would be better than that. His contract is still a concern for me though. I don't move on Peavey until the Angels/Texeria thing is settled. I'm still hoping for a Fielder/Santana swap. I'd rather have Santana than Peavey.
  2. I don't know about the reserve SS, but I'd like to bring Ray Durham back at 2B, and expand his duties to LF. Durham played a little CF for the White Sox earlier in his career, and while I think that would be a stretch, LF should be no problem for him. If he hits close to last year, you won't find a better bench bat. I would think Braun would start getting some work in RF in spring training, which would in essence make Durham a backup at 3 spots.
  3. Joe Nelson was suprisingly made available. Theres a poster here who wanted to aquire Nelson during the season, I'm guessing he'd be happy to add him now. Nelson had a terrific year, with a 2.00 ERA and 60 Ks in 54 innings. He would be a terrific addition. I'd have no interest in Britton, he doesn't have the stuff he used to have, and I don't see him getting it back considering he is grossly overweight.
  4. I'd be interested in Smoltz, but more as a closer than a starter. Has he stated his preference for next season? He has prefered starting in the past, but that was before this major shoulder injury. Fewer innings at this point might be better for his arm, and he could be a fantastic closer if he's close to healthy.
  5. Hudson is a perfect example of why we should just hold on to Weeks. Hudson is a quality player now, but as a 25 year old he put up a line of 268/328/395/723. He wasn't even as good as Weeks then. Its very possible that Weeks will be better than Hudson over the next 3 years.
  6. We would definatly start with Escobar, but I think the Cubs offer is a little underestimated, because Sean Marshall is underestimated as a pitcher. He's a huge lefty strikethrower with good K numbers. He had an ERA under 4 in 19 starts in 2007. I can see him becoming a quality #2. We would need to trade Cory Hart to get a young MLB ready arm to put into this deal. I'd deal Hart for Marshall, but unfortunatly the Cubs are looking for a lefty swinging OF. Whether its Peavy or someone else, we should be building an offer for a pitcher using some of our minor league surplus. If we keep all these prospects that will be in AA/AAA next year and put them all on our big league team, we will be way to young to compete, it would be like full rebuild mode. I consider Escobar part of the surplus because of Brent Brewer, who is the best athlete in the organization.
  7. Abeu and Dunn would require multi-year contracts, so I think it would make more sense to deal Hart if 1 of those guys could be signed. Hart would aquire us a better starting pitcher than Cam would, and having a good defensive CF would be of huge importance if we put Dunn or Abreu in LF and move Braun to RF. An OF of Dunn/Abreu, Hart, Braun would be a return to the caliber of defense we had in 2007.
  8. I didn't forget him, he just wasn't any good. He was the kind of guy you work to replace. You don't try to aquire a back of the bullpen guy, you try to aquire middle of the bullpen guys, and the ones that are cold/dont work out end up at the backend.
  9. BA described him as throwing 92 in winterball, so he's not really a hardthrowing reliever anymore, he just was one before he got fat. He certainly seems like he'll fall in line with Melvin's other rule 5 picks. The only one who contributed anything was Enrigue Cruz, who was awful in his 1 season in the bigs, was eventually dropped from the 40, then successfully traded for Brian Shouse.
  10. How would you know that? You're trying to pass off a theory as fact. And again you list a group of corner OF/DH types that do nothing to help NYs hole in CF. Wouldn't Hart be dealt for pitching? The team had $20 million available for CC, but doesn't have $10 million available to sign a lefty hitting OF if Hart is traded? Now I agree this scenario is a longshot because Melvin would have to actually make a trade offer instead of waiting for a team to make an offer to him, but its still plausible.
  11. Melvin has all the leverage, as we have no reason to trade Cameron, he makes us better. So what if theres 3 quality hitters available? How many of them play CF? There all poor defensive corner OFs. That won't fix the Yankee CF problem. The only other CF available is Jim Edmonds, and he is as injury prone as they come. Cameron is as durable as they come.
  12. There are no FA 3Bs of relevence left. Of starting pitchers available to the Brewers, the list is Oliver Perez, Braden Looper, Freddy Garcia, Paul Byrd, injured Brad Penny and other even lesser scrubs.
  13. I'll predict we lose Joe Bateman this morning. He could help a teams bullpen immediately. He really had a fantastic year this year. We should have put him on our 40. He have plenty of wastes holding spots, like Gwynn.
  14. I remember how funny it was during the season when Attanosio stated the team would lose money this year, like we're all totals rubs and haven't the slightest knowledge of baseball economics. The secret is out, this team can easily support a $90 million dollar payroll, and more.
  15. Which ones? Lowe and Burnett already have huge offers. Do you really want Oliver Perez? Braden Looper? Paul Byrd? These guys don't make us better.
  16. Brandon Wood's star has faded. His AAA numbers, when curved for park factors, are pedestrian. He has been awful in his big league call-ups, and was cut from his winter ball team because of awful hitting. If the Angels land Randy Johnson, then I hold out hope for a Fielder for Santana swap, otherwise, I'm not interested.
  17. Sure, some of those pitchers are quality, but which one won't be grossly overpaid? Signing a FA pitcher will put the Brewers in a major hole for a long time. Cameron is a good player with a good contract. As for Sheets, we can ask Melvin to re-sign him, but Melvin has already stated he won't be making an offer to him.
  18. I don't see the point in clearing money so we can sign a FA when the FA's available are undesirable. Pretty clear sign that bad luck combined with Melvin's unaggressive approach has already caused the Brewers to punt 2009. Then in 2010, we will break in a number of rookies, so we can't really be expected to compete then too. 2011, here we come!
