  1. There is not one ideal lineup. It varies by who is hot and who is not. You can't get out of a slump sitting for long periods so the manager just has to gauge things. Counsell is generally pretty good at it.
  2. Is a strike or lockout a foregone conclusion? I sure think so. I don't think the issues are any more likely to result in a work stoppage than in the past. There's always things that are contentious but they can all be resolved.
  3. What does Barker have to do? His WHIP at Nashville is 0.652. He's got a career 2.24 ERA in 4 minor league seasons. He's allowing 4.5 hits per 9 innings. By the way, why not bring Milner back? Yeah he gave up a lot of hits, but he also fanned 16 and walked just 2.
  4. Anthony Rendon out for the year. 58 games and a .712 OPS for $28 million in 2021. $190 million left on contract. Makes Yellie look like a bargain. Maybe they'll pick up Travis Shaw.
  5. A vaccine is considered effective if it prevents a person from getting sick not if it prevents infection. Most vaccinated people who are not feeling ill do not get tested unless their work requires it. Baseball requires frequent testing for both the vaccinated and unvaccinated. The Delta variant is widespread now and likely causing many more breakthrough cases than are reported which means natural herd immunity will develop rather quickly. Great Britain felt the spike in cases from the Delta variant about 3-4 weeks before the U.S. In the last week new cases in the U.K. have dropped significantly. If that happens in the U.S., cases should start dropping again by mid to late August.
  6. The video evidence Reno is and always has been a hitter's paradise as evidenced by a team .885 OPS. Still that's quite a feat.
  7. Vogelbach is not similar to McKinney. Since coming to the Brewers his OPS is .779, not .735. He has a 30 HR season in the big leagues. Vogelbach has a career OBP of .330, including .347 as a Brewer. McKinney's career OBP is a woeful .289, .286 in 2021. You have Peterson's who's 31 and who's been up and down since 2014 and has a career .658 OPS vs. Vogelbach who's proven he can be a 30 HR guy. Sure Peterson plays a lot of positions, but none particularly well. No doubt he deserves a lot of credit for his play from late June to mid July, but the addition of Escobar pushes him to the bench.
  8. I'd keep Vogelbach over Peterson. Eight of their last 35 or so games are in AL parks where a DH is used. Next year a DH is likely in the NL. I'm not swayed by Peterson's hot stretch that covered what 20 games? He's a career fringe player. Big Dan went down about the time of the crackdown on sticky stuff. I'd like to see him hit now. Besides in a late game PH situation. if I'm the opposing manager, Vogelbach strikes a lot more fear in me than Peterson.
  9. Peterson had a terrific stretch, but he has an extensive career record of mediocrity and he'd be reduced to a PH role. He also doesn't offer a whole lot defensively. It might be better for him to catch on with one of the teams that were decimated personnel wise by the trades. I personally would rather have Vogelbach in that role and keep him around as viable full time DH in 2022. They have enough games in AL parks down the stretch to keep big Dan sharp too. Besides, I'd hate to see the Brewers give up on Vogelbach and see him breakout for the Cubs.
  10. Vogelbach has 3 more years of control. I could see the Rangers having interest as part of a deal for Ian Kennedy.
  11. "they're pretty much full on offense when Yelich, Vogelbach and Jace are back" I don't see where there's room for both Vogelbach and Jace. They aren't sending down a red hot Taylor so they can keep both those guys. They coould use Vogelbach in a deal for a reliever. That he started his rehab last night is probably not a coincidence.
  12. Alcantara is definitely a good prospect that any team should want, but I'm quite certain he wouldn't overtake Mitchell for our top spot. I would guess he would slot in 5th behind Turang, Small, and Perez for us. I was surprised the Cubs did so well on the Rizzo deal. Seemed like a very solid return. Cubs are picking up all of Rizzo's remaining salary and that increased the value of the return. Since Yanks are paying substantial amount in luxury tax, that was worth a lot more than the $5 million or so they are saving.
  13. Fully agree. A good breakout season at 27. Like to think he’s a fixture as at least the #4 outfielder for the next several seasons. Why #4? He's currently batter than Yelich, Cain, JBJ and Garcia. Kid has earned a starting spot, plain and simple. Agreed. Counsell was patient with JBJ because they invested a lot to get him, but I suspect from now on, the bat plays and right now that's Taylor. Taylor is still technically a rookie, but he's really entering his prime and he could be a star in the making and one with years of team control. I think one plus from acquiring Escobar is that against RHP, Counsell won't feel he needs two struggling LH hitting outfielders in the lineup, especially with a hot Taylor and Cain back. He still has Tellez, Escobar and Navarez sprinkled in the middle of his lineup even if he goes with an all RH hitting outfield.
  14. So Rizzo gains a mere 2 games in the standings? Hilarious.
  15. The guys affected by this deal aren't Shaw or Hiura or Reyes. Those guys weren't in the picture before this. This trade affects two guys. Obviously it affects Urias, but not in any long term way. He reverts back to number one utility player for a couple months then goes into 2022 as the primary 3B. Given what's at stake, they preferred Escobar's experience going into the postseason in 2021, but Urias will play plenty as guys get days off and he's shown he's better when pressure is eased. The big loser here is Jace Peterson. Stearns probably realized that he got everything possible and more out of Peterson and he was starting to revert to the marginal major league player he's been all of his career. The last roster spot will come down to Shaw or Peterson.
  16. Makes sense for the Reds. We know the Pirates and the Cubs have thrown in the towel. Reds have 12 games left against Pirates. The rest of their schedule is pretty easy too. Reds have only one team to catch in the division. They are only 5 back in the wild card, albeit to teams that are loaded and getting better.
  17. If the Brewers traded for Mancini, I'm almost certain Baltimore would want them to include Tellez as a significant part of the return. If that happened, I think the only other major piece would be a pitcher close to major leagues, likely Small.
  18. Posey's a HOFer. Great years by that level of player aren't that unusual and he's been relatively healthy. Opting out last year might have revitalized him. Crawford's been a quality SS for years. The thing that stands out about the Giants is their stability of their organization.
  19. deGrom is on the DL and the Nats are just 6 back. I don't see them selling.
  20. He's reported to be "retiring". Apparently he's frustrated about having been demoted by the White Sox. After his red hot start, he tailed off considerably but has a 1.032 OPS in AAA. Truth is he has no role with the Sox with Jimenez due back soon, and the success of Vaughn and Gavin Sheets. He's a catcher by trade but in truth he's a hitter. Has played a little 1B. Seems to me that with Hiura relegated to facing lefties and pinch hitting and not doing either all that well, that Mercedes might be an option and give the Brewers at worst a nice bench bat you can stick in the lineup once in a while at 1B and DH while providing protection at catcher. Brewers still have 8 games in AL parks. Going forward if there's a DH next year, his value would increase.
  21. Why on Earth would they want Cron? His OPS at Coors Field is .955. His OPS at all the other stadiums is .682. The Brewers would be better if mixing and matching Tellez, Peterson, Hiura and Vogelbach than acquiring CJ Cron to play first base. Cron's OPS by season prior to Colorado: .739, .739, .792, .741, .816, .780, .894 His HR totals: 11, 16, 16, 16, 30, 25, 4. Playing half your games in Coors messes you up when you go on the road. Cron has a career .829 OPS vs. LHP. The vast majority of that was not playing in Coors.
  22. Who you going to replace? Best case is they can sell him to some bottom feeder team that needs an arm to replenish their rotation after they deal a starter. After the season they'll be a couple dozen inexpensive veterans out there to contend for the 6th starter job.
  23. Adames has been the second best SS in the NL this season behind only Tatis. Buying out his arby years and at least one year of FA has to be explored. Baez is going to find teams aren't passing out $200 million plus to guys with OBPs in the .280's. He'll probably end up taking the QO and hope he can rebuild his value.
  24. There's a lot of teams out there looking for backup catchers and there aren't many available. There's not a RH hitting Vogt out there. The guys out there are like Sandy Leon, who's OPS is .440.
  25. Trevor Richards has been a very effective reliever. Overall in 2021 he's fanned 12.1 per 9 innings. He's under 30 and controllable for 3 more seasons. That's plenty for a guy who'll be back in AAA as soon as either Shaw or Vogelbach are back. He was serviceable in 2019 for Jays and good in 35 games in 2020 but this year he was struggling with a .610 OPS. It's not like it was a terrible trade, but the timing was curious and the fact he's gotten very limited action confirms that. Sure Adames was struggling before he was acquired but he went right in the lineup on day one. I still think it's possible that Tellez was traded for to be used as return for a more accomplished bat. Maybe someone like Carlos Santana? He makes more sense for KC than he does for Brewers.
