  1. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confirmation_bias Particularly the 'self-fufilling prophesy' part, wherein the person's perceptions lead to repetition of behaviors to make the event reoccur.
  2. Since I know there are a number of Community fans, yes, that is the same Jim Rash who plays Dean Pelton. Also, having seen The Muppets, I hope Brett from Flight of the Conchords wins the Oscar. Once you know he helped write the music, you can't un-hear it. Yet another year I've managed to miss the Oscar nominees almost completely, mostly because I never went out to see "Moneyball" in the theater.
  3. Reading the JS - Newswatch "blog" (which does not, by itself, count against the 20) covers ~80% of the news I would go to JS-Online to read. http://www.jsonline.com/newswatch/ Congratulations on finding a way to get less ad revenue from me!
  4. ^ Not to mention the large signage associated with the sponsorship (Pepsi has been visible on the outfield scoreboard for the history of the park, as well as the sign above the Dew Deck).
  5. Belling just reported that the Brewers contract with Pepsi has expired, and that the Brewers have approached Coke about a possible sponsorship. Pepsi declined the Brewers initial offer, but they are still a party to the bidding.

  8. 17 posts, and I don't see a single reference to T-Plush? Volstad is a back-of-the rotation guy, but he's a decent back of the rotation starter (I'm seeing 14 QS in 29 starts). I'd be worried about the HR totals playing in Wrigley, but he's young....and has more seasons of sub-5 ERA than over. Compared to the guy he's replacing, who will either be great or horrible seemingly at his own whims, I think this is a decent move for the Cubs.
  9. I might 'borrow' my parents address / subscription later on, but for now, I'm content to not click on their story links. Would it be horribly cynical for me to create a 2nd twitter account, for the sole purpose of tweeting a link to the stories I actually want to read?
  10. I think it mainly depends on what you're looking for in a device. I own a laptop & an iPod touch already. I wanted something with a bigger screen than the ipod that I can carry around inside the house, and maybe read a book or two on. Yes, the hardware isn't as fast as the iOS Safari browser, and people who prefer eInk for reading books will still prefer eInk over the Kindle Fire screen. (The power button complaint is one that I totally don't get -- my iPod has the same problem; if you touch the off button, the screen turns off.) I think the device will get better as Amazon continues to patch and improve the operating system. Moreover, when the next lifechanging product comes from the summit upon Cupertino, you can buy it knowing that you're only replacing a $200 device rather than a $600-750 iPad. For someone on his 3rd iPod, the value in this line of thinking cannot be understated.
  11. As someone who has played through all of the Assassin's Creed games, Brotherhood is the one you want to play. AC: Revelations isn't a bad game, but it feels like the writers were content to spin their wheels to push out an annual installment between AC:B and AC3 this fall. (In other words, the one thing you don't really get from the game is actual "Revelations.") My pile of shame includes Uncharted 3 & Portal 2; I'm holding out for the price drop I know will come for Batman AC. (Plus, I know I won't have time to play the latter anytime soon, with FF13-2 at the end of January, and SSX at the end of February.) Next game I'm actually going to play will be Bastion on XBLA.
  12. Pretty much our backup shortstop by default, unless another signing is on the way. (...and if there is another signing on the way, I assume Izturis would end up taking Taylor Green's bench spot, in favor of letting Green play every day in AAA.)
  13. Maybe now we can get Escobar back. I'd have welcomed Yuni back if he had agreed to take a pay cut and serve as a bench player, since we still need a reserve ss. From the article, they're going to give him an opportunity to start at 2b. While his offensive production was semi-tolerable at shortstop, his OPS from last season would put him in the lower 25% of second basemen with at least 300 ABs last year (and that doesn't even consider his defense at a new position). Like most deals in baseball, it depends heavily on the price, which I assume is considerably less than he made in his prior tenure in KC. I also hope they have someone else to compete with him for the starting job.
  14. I'm chiming in here, because I think this is an interesting topic. There are two distinct measurements of 'value' in these terms: one objective (e.g. wins above a replacement player), and one which is more subjective (Mat Gamel's value as a 1b for the Brewers last year was minimal, given that Prince Fielder took the lion's share of the ABs at that position). I think that Enderr's take on the trade is that Veres is probably not an increase in objective value, but is roughly equivalent in terms of making a contribution to the 2012 Brewers (who have Ramirez, Gamel, and Green on the infield corners, and will probably still add a 5th OF type who could play 1b, while they also need to replace Hawkins and Saito in the bullpen). That's the perspective which comes closest to my own on the trade. Both of these players were non-tender candidates, because their (subjective) value to their previous teams would appear to be worth less than they'd stand to make in arbitration. Getting something for a player who has minimal value to your team is better than getting nothing, so even if a good year of McGehee has more value than a good year for Veres....making this move should make the Brewers a better team next year. (EDIT: Cursed once again by my inability to type quickly!)
  15. The dollar amount on the contract will be the largest determinant as to whether this is a good deal or not. The further below $3 mil. it is, the more I suspect I will like having Gonzalez play SS. I think he'll probably come pretty close to replacement level play at SS, but for much cheaper than Yuni B. last season. Not a great option with the bat, but he's at least a defensive upgrade at a position where the Brewers have an absolute need. (As McCalvy noted in his blog, the Brewers still have to get a backup SS.)
  16. After that deal, I assume they've priced themselves out of the market for Fielder and Pujols.
  17. Between UNC and Marquette, it's a big week for Badger hoops. I just hope they didn't leave their hot shooting in Chicago.
  18. I'd normally wish him luck....but it's the Cubs.
  19. I'm a shill for Community, in that I think it's the funniest show on TV right now (with Archer, P-Rec, Happy Endings, and Louie not far behind). It also troubles me to read a comment from someone who thinks the show is better than another NBC show, but isn't watching it. Community is going on hiatus because more people watch Whitney than they do Community. People watch a lot of TV shows more than they do Community; while the time-slot is horrible (Big Bang Theory, X-Factor / Idol, etc.), it's never going to be the mass-market, lowest-common-denominator success (see, pretty much the entire CBS lineup) that it deserves to be. It doesn't mean that the show is cancelled, any more than Parks not being on the fall schedule last year (even after they pushed through a half-season of episodes during the summer to work around Amy Poehler's pregnancy) meant cancellation. If you're picking up what they're putting down, then you need to watch this show, and get like-minded friends to watch it too. I think there's a decent chance Community will still get a 4th season (Sony wants the show to at least hit the 80 episode mark, in order to hit syndication)....but it could go on even longer if it could just find an audience.
  20. My apologies if this has already been pointed out, but would a 15 AL / 15 NL split virtually guaranty that there would be an interleague play series at all times during the season? I seem to recall one of the logical arguments for the Brewers moving to the NL being that MLB wanted an even number of teams in each league. One of the aspects that makes interleague play feasible is that - since it only happens during part of the season - a team can make roster moves for a week or two. Perpetual interleague play is going to force teams to churn through a couple of players if they want to add an extra hitter (in AL parks) or an extra pitcher (in the NL). Since, if memory serves, there is still a minimum amount of time between demotion and call-up, you can't bring back the same player you sent down after a 3-game series (barring an injury). Outside of that, I can't say that the Astros moving bothers me all that much. In the short run, the Brewers did very well against Houston....but that could change in the long run with a new ownership group (something Brewers fans can certainly appreciate).
  21. With Gamel out of options, I'm guessing the Brewers will look for a righty with some pop to fill that 5th OF / platoon 1b role. Kotsay really didn't have a place on the 2012 roster, so I wish him the best. Plus, San Diego's outfield is large enough that he probably won't be asked to play in CF.
  22. http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=7186662 Not sure if that was posted anywhere in the Minor League forum, but it's a fairly quick clip speaking positively about Bradley's performance in the AFL.
  23. I know that she's in them, but there can't possibly be enough Anna Kendrick on-screen to justify my sitting through a Twilight film. (I also liked The Hunger Games when I read it earlier this year, but am worried how far they might go in the teen romance direction in the other two books.)
  24. I can't help but compare the state of our team to the Cleveland Cavaliers, since Mr. Gilbert was essentially the runner-up in the Brewers sale. Suffice to say, if Prince does choose a new destination in the off-season, I very much doubt we'll be seeing a tirade (in full Comic Sans glory) like the one which accompanied LeBron's big decision. Fairly glad things turned out the way they did, NLCS results notwithstanding.
  25. Personally, I'd be bothered if anyone with ties to the Brewers under DM ends up in the Cubs or Cardinals jobs. Both Mike and Dale have shown themselves to be very good at what they do, and they're people I would like to be able to root for....from a comfortable distance. It was one thing when Cecil Cooper was managing a sinking Houston team, but would be quite another if one of our guys ends up some place where there's a legitimate plan / talent base. I want to be able to not like the Cubs Manager; would it be possible Dusty Baker to manage 2 teams in the same division at the same time?
