  1. Bratwurst throwing to Chorizo. (...or Mark A. throwing to Uecker, whichever makes more sense.)
  2. Posting it so that Kiwi doesn't have to... ...and because someone in my office noticed that I'm wearing my Brewers jersey untucked today, and referenced the article. (Is that you, or just someone you know?)
  3. Finally watched the premiere tonight. I'm glad that at least two of the subplots from the finale were cut off early (Pam & Jim, Holly thinking Kevin's "Special"). B.J. Novack (Ryan Howard) is not only one of the show's writer/producers, but he's also still in the opening credits....which I believe means he'll appear in a certain number of episodes (part of the SAG contract). I don't know where they'll put him, but he's not going away.
  4. I'd rather have Yo pitching his first ever post-season game at home than in Philly. My thinking is that I'd let the two guys with post-season experience pitch on the road. The other thing that I realize could play a factor is where / how the off-days line up.
  5. Wednesday - Game 1 - Suppan Thursday - Game 2 - C.C. Friday - no game Saturday - Game 3 - Gallardo Sunday - Game 4 - Bush Monday - no game Tuesday - Game 5 - C.C. God, it's nice to have to think about this. Last time the Brewers were in the post-season, I was 3 years old.
  6. I think there's an attitudinal change which has to be attributed to the new manager. Going into the finale, he's managed the team to a 6-5 record....which isn't bad, but isn't anything to boast about. The biggest change to the team, IMO, was to put Mike Cameron into the leadoff spot. .180 / .268 / .220 / .488 (50 AB) Small sample, but I'm sure that's not what he was looking for. I've said in other places, I think he's done a good job giving Seth McClung more of an impact role, whereas he seemed lost in the mix under Yost. Given the stumblings of Parra, Suppan, and Sheets, I'd be tempted to give Seth a start in the post-season. I don't know if it's out of necessity or by design, but the pitching staff in non-C.C. games has resembled spring training games. Ideally, I'd like to see more normalcy. I'd like to see Dale be a candidate for the Managerial spot next season, but I want a comprehensive search to find the best guy to lead this team.
  7. I'd love to see how Sheets would perform if his manager limited him to 100 pitches/ start. It seems that all of his injury problems coincided with Ned Yost allowing him to throw 110-120 pitches into games. I think that you have to be more careful with Sheeter to get the most out of him.
  8. I'm excited for today's game. A little anxious to see what they'll be doing with the rotation if they do win...but still excited.
  9. Are they going without a catcher? (Curious to see if it's Hill or Blanco).
  10. Are they going without a catcher? (Curious to see if it's Hill or Blanco).
  11. I don't know what everyone is griping about. Sheets is throwing in the low 90s (hit 93 last inning), usually gets stronger as the game goes on, and never has great body language on the mound. It's like people expect him to come out throwing 97 mph....
  12. My first chance to actually sit down and watch the Brewers in HD (I don't get FSN HD ...yet). I love everything about the picture except for the '2' next to the CHC.
  13. Seth has a save opportunity, doesn't he? Correction: Seth came in with the game tied, so he's the pitcher of record.
  14. Especially when it means he almost certainly won't pitch in the next game (and possibly for the rest of the series).
  15. Seth McAwesome! I have to say that I approve of Dale's decision to use Seth more often (as he seemed lost in the shuffle with Ned at the helm).
  16. Rickie Weeks, Defensive replacement.
  17. For the record, Hart's OBP dropping ~ 50 points in the second half of the season also isn't an abberation, as he's done that in each of the past 3 seasons. The difference is, Hart's first half OBP has never been as bad as it was in the first half. Is it that tough to admit that Hart may have been seeing / hitting the ball differently in 2007 than he has in 2008? His SLG is near identical to where it was 2 seasons ago, as is his GB/FB ratio, and the difference between his Avg. and OBP is far more similar to 2006 than 2007. Based on all of that, I can't help but think that Hart either saw the ball differently in 2007, or simply had a different approach to hitting, than he has in the surrounding years.
  18. Hart is... - swinging at more pitches outside the strike zone; - seeing fewer pitches per/ AB in 2008 than he did in '07, which was fewer than he was seeing in '06; - hitting balls on the ground, his GB/FB is 1.01 this year, 0.98 for his career. In 2007, his ratio was 0.83, the only year in which the ratio favors fly balls. It's also important to note that Hart's 07 OBP was bolstered by an inordinate amount of HBP's (13, as compared to 5 this year). I can't shake the feeling that 2007 is the abberation for Hart.
  19. Gagne has a 3.86 ERA since the break, in 21 innings pitched (not sure if that includes tonight).Source (I want to give you more of a hard time for asking that, since ESPN is fairly easy to negotiate, but it's a good thing you asked after a big Brewers win.) If nothing else, we can at least rest assured knowing that Gagne has left the pitching mound in better shape than how he found it.
  20. I don't particularly have a gripe with small ball....I just don't think that the team is well geared for it. Like it or not, this team's offense is imbalanced in favor of slugging. To get the most out of this offense, you need to maximize your team's chances of hitting the longball. Giving up outs may mean one less AB for the heart of your lineup (or at least a pinch hitter). Sveum's tactics would be better-served for a high-OBP, low-SLG team; when you can't sit around and expect a 3-run bomb, it's far more important to take advantage of your opportunities to steal a run when they present themselves. It also makes more sense for a team that plays better defense then the Brewers have (making single runs more valuable). That's not to say everything Dale has done with the offense is bad; I think moving J.J. behind Prince in the lineup has been vital to his power coming back. With Hart playing horribly, there hasn't been much of a reason to give Fielder anything to hit. About the only time I'd consider bunting with a non pitcher (not including bunting for a base hit, which fast guys like Corey should try occasionally when no one is on base) is 1st and 2nd, 0 outs; going from memory, the effect on average runs scored is negligible, but the odds of scoring at least one run go up considerably (as there are more ways to score from 3b than from 2b, and because you've temporarily eliminated the double play). Even then, it depends on who's at the plate.
  21. Just to add, there's an important distinction that needs to be drawn here. You're correct in pointing out the average of the aggregate runs scored based on a situation, in which the number of outs tends to have a greater marginal impact than the base-positioning of the runner. The natural counterpoint, however, is that by sacrificing the runner from first to second, the probability of scoring at least one run does actually increase. (I'm sure someone can dig up the chart that goes along with this...I'm at work.) We can debate when (or if) it's best to play for a single run, or the frequency with which Sveum does so (too often, based on the last week, in my humble opinion)....but that's the theory behind the practice.
  22. NBC would have been better served putting together a recap of last season before the show (a la what Lost usually does) than the build-up to the premiere they actually put on. If memory serves, Nikki / Jessica / Gina / ??? was in the building in New Orleans that exploded in the Season / Volume 2 ending. As that is the case, we never saw the body. I enjoy the show, but increasingly more as a stand-in for the actual comic book characters that I grew up with.
  23. I think that answering the 3b question starts over at 1b. If Prince is traded in the off-season, that opens up a spot (either in 2009 or 2010) for Gamel. If Fielder stays, Gamel will get more of a look at 3b (unless he proves that he doesn't belong there...but I don't think that one more year will be enough to demonstrate that, as long as the bat plays). The solution that makes the most sense to me is moving Hardy (or Escobar if Hardy really won't move....yes I realize that doesn't maximize Escobar's value, but I'd like to see him hit ML pitching before trading either player) to 3b. Hardy's surprising power numbers (20 HR's in each of the past two years) would put his OPS on-par with Cirillo's numbers in the 90s; I'm willing to accept that. But I wouldn't want to move either player for just one year, so it comes back to where Gamel plays.
  24. Not enough punctuation in the thread title. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif I'm keeping an eye out for a BoC or a good gaming laptop.
