  1. Usually first year managers are given a little bit longer leash. I have seen heat on him so I don't think he is given a free pass. I guess it is up to the individual to decide whether he is getting the heat he may deserve. Personally, I was very much anti-Ned. I think that Macha does a better job matching up hitters and pitchers than Ned. I don't like to make outs on the bases so in that sense I don't mind Macha, but I can understand why some of you think that they are not aggressive enough. In defense of their strategy and third base coach, teams are playing their outfied very deep against the Brewers and are daring the Brewers to bunch hits together. It is tough to get extra bases against that defense. Again, it would be easy to argue for more stolen bases in order to counteract that. I am very disappointed that we seem to have run out of gas again. Ned's teams usually faded down the stretch. Now, Ken's is doing the same. Maybe we need to keep searching until we find a manager who can prevent that. Maybe it isn't the manager's fault and we need better players. I guess I am saying that seeing what I have seen, and seeing what I am seeing, I am less certain as to whether it is the manager's fault or the players' fault.
  2. Are we going to be on the hook for Hall's contract next year?
  3. I became worried about Bill Castro when it seemed our pitching staff wasn't ready to start the season, and this after an extra week of spring training. Since that time I haven't been able to decide if he is the problem or if someone else is the problem, or we just have bad pitchers. Who sets up the scouting report? Does Kendall call whatever pitches he wants, or does he have a game plan that he has to follow? I don't know the answer to that. I just know that we really are nibbling this year.
  4. Our inability to develop young pitchers has hurt us in two ways. Not only have we had to overpay to fill the gaps, but we are stuck with these bad contracts now and it limits some of our ability to make changes in the future. One thing we have to remember also is that many prospects don't pan out. That is normal. I felt going into this year we were going to use this year to evaluate and see which players are worth long-term extensions and which guys will be moved in order to make room for the next round of position players. I think that is factoring into what we have done this year. Finally, we haven't done real well bringing outfielders to the majors either. Cain and Katin have some numbers that have me questioning whether they will pan out too.
  5. I think that we just got Weathers as trade bait for Ruben Quevedo and Peter Zoccolillo.
  6. I am thinking that selling would be the way to go as well. Needing a couple of pieces ( as MA said) is actually needing a lot. We may get better by selling. We don't have a lot of guys playing well right now.
  7. We need to learn a little from our past. We traded for slight improvements in Len Barker, Jerry Reuss, Jeffrey Leonard, Mike Boddicker, Scott Linebrink, and Tony Graffanino. It wasn't enough. Somebody in our division is going to get hot. We need to think not about improving our position by 3 games, but getting to 90 victories. I don't want to make a trade that has more long-term harm than short-term gain. I didn't mind trading LaPorta because we still Gillespie. Next year we won't have either of those guys and we will have nothing to show for it (except in the low minors).
  8. I have a hard time advocating the firing of Doug Melvin. Building a consistantly competitive team in Milwaukee is not easy. We are 2 games out of first right now, we are not the Nationals. We have two bad contacts. I will give him a pass on Riske. I think he works for an owner who is less patient than his public personna indicates. I think that the a lot of people get frustrated by the way Cubs spend $ every off-season and we don't. We can't do that. We are going to hit and miss by looking for second-tier hidden value. We have done much better in recent years than Billy Beane's A's. I think that our organizational weakness has been drafting/developing pitching. We haven't had the pitching prospects that the Twins have had and haven't been able to make a Santana trade. Because of this we have had to gamble on Suppan, Looper, Gagne, etc...
  9. Who knew that Bill Virdon would be such a trend-setter? Moneyball baseball strategy is essentially what Bill Virdon did in his multitude of managerial stops.
  10. Bradley has 3 home runs on the season. 2 or 3 of them are against Milwaukee.
  11. Gamel isn't playing because he hasn't been as productive as McGehee and Counsell. Playing time is not about love and hate (as a high school coach that oversimplification drives me nuts). I do agree that Gamel should be in Nashville if he doesn't play at the major league level. What good does watching do him and what why should he accumulate service time unnecessarily.
  12. I don't hate JJ Hardy. But I also know how small market baseball works. JJ will be traded soon (next couple of years) because we have another prospect at shortstop in Alcides Escobar. I think that one thing that attracts members to Escobar is that he is different from JJ. Without Weeks we lack speed at the top of the line-up. Escobar has that. Escobar seems to be more of a top of the order guy (I know that he would be better suited for it if he walked more). Alcides may fill a need. While some on this board are upset with JJ, my problems are in rightfield. I don't think Corey is playing as hard as he did before he made the all-star game. That is the spot that really needs to improve.
  13. People wanted to see Ken yell and scream at the umps after the game. What good is that? The umps don't stay on the field. Nobody comes onto the field to argue balls and strikes after the game in the majors. He was on the top step yelling as the umps ran in. Ken's job as manager is to get the players' minds off of the call and focusing on the next game.
  14. The issue we have with putting together a starting rotation is Suppan's contract. We should be able to pay 5 Jeff Suppan's with the money he makes.
  15. I am jonesing for a vent thread. Barring a miraculous comeback, this will count for just one loss. I would also like to see DM make some moves. A starting pitcher and a lead-off hitting right fielder would be nice. I don't know how much we can afford to give up though.
  16. Ever since the Brewers had that string of tough losses on Sundays two season ago I have noticed that the Brewers play much better at night than during the day. The Brewers are now 10-15 in day games. That is the worst day game record in the NL Central. Most of the problems during the day seem to be offensive. I took the following stats off of CBS Sportsline. Player BA OPS Ks BB Ryan Braun day .250 .788 25 6 night .365 1.083 38 29 Prince Fielder day .235 .836 27 19 night .337 1.118 38 35 JJ Hardy day .101 .296 21 7 night .291 .843 29 21 Corey Hart day .233 .718 19 7 night .262 .769 48 21 Jason Kendall day .147 .415 10 4 night .273 .684 18 22 I have been wondering why the drop in production for day games. Could it be the shadows? But our pitchers, other than Gallardo, seem to have similar stats day and night. Maybe our young guys are having too much fun, or maybe they just haven't developed a routine for day games yet? Since most day games occur on travel days, we may let the travel preparations distract from our play. It could also just be the small sample, but I find the difference in the K/BB ratio for some of the hitters interesting. In the case of Kendall, maybe the idea of catching day games after night games isn't as good of an idea as what our managers have thought. Hardy's numbers are so bad that I would think of giving him a lot of days off on day games. I am curious as to what the rest of you think.
  17. I wonder if CV's twitters about the Cavaliers have convinced the Bucks that they he doesn't want to play in Milwaukee. CV had some moments for us but he has a lot of holes in his game too (he tends to get lost on defense). A legitimate question is what do we have? I don't know how much gas Kurt Thomas has left in his tank. It seems like everybody in the NBA is going to be a free agent after the season. We could have a drastically different roster again in 2010-11. We have never recovered from the Larry Harris era.
  18. I think that Gerut's bat is all handle. Every thing he hits seems to be in on the hands.
  19. It feel's great to win a series. It also is nice to score some runs in back-to-back games. I am getting tired of American League (DH) baseball already.
  20. I don't like the way Manny leans back in his wind-up. I think it is difficult for him to wind-up the exact same way every time. I think we could simplify his delivery and he would have better command. What really worries me is when people talk about his confidence issues. I worry that he could be the next Wes Obermueller.
  21. We should be able to get an inning out of Jorge Julio once in a while. If we can't, then he needs to go. RJ Swindle would help us more. Smith could help us a lot more than that as well.
  22. When I first started coaching basketball I used to complain about every call. Referees hated me and I never got a call. As I got older, I calmed down. I developed some friendships with referees. At the most I would complain about a handful of calls. I noticed that when I would complain about a travel I would get that call shortly after that, same with handchecks, etc.... My long, convoluted point is that most umpires will learn to ignore the constant complainer. When a manager picks his battles the umpire will be more likely to consider that point.
  23. I hope Hernan plays. I am worried that against righties we will use Counsell + Irribarren or Gamel at second and third. I don't want Gamel and Irribarren to share in a platoon. They both need to play.
  24. I think that if Weeks goes on the DL then we will fill second with the guys on our current roster. I would guess that we would see Counsell, McGehee, and Hall all play there. I think that Catalanotto would come straight up to the big club and fill the open spot on our 40-man roster. I don't think that Irribarren would come up until after other options fail. I think Counsell has the first crack at second, and like him Irribarren is a left-handed hitter.
  25. I can remember a lot of games over the years against the Cardinals where we have found a way to lose this game.
