  1. This thread is making me realize that I really don't miss the old "bastion of negativity" game threads. These are no fun. I'm a "realist" fan, but it just irritates me that whenever the team loses it has to be endemic of some major problem. It isn't. They're playing a good team on the road, and Suppan is regressing to the mean. It's too bad they are going through a team-wide regression at the same time, but oh well.
  2. However, what a lot of people fail to recognize is that if a batter in that situation draws a walk he did so because he did not see any pitches that would probably result in an out. Exactly. A smart hitter is much better than an over-aggressive one. There's all kinds of "hidden benefits" from the walk, like forcing the pitcher to throw more pitches, which causes him to possibly tire, as well as show his repertoire to the on deck hitter. Any plate appearance that results in a non-out is a good thing. The more baserunners you have, the more likely you are to score runs, and thus win games. So yeah, walks do win games.
  3. I like Ford, and especially Brantley. Brantley only had 12 extra base hits all last season, and he's got 10 already this year, so there's hope that he's gained some pop, and can avoid the questions that follow TGJ. Brantley has a really advanced approach at the plate, and he just turned 20 yesterday, so I think he has a pretty good shot.
  4. Wow. I need to start listening to Homer. That's not something you'd expect a sports talk show host to say (unless it was Will Carroll on BP Radio). I wouldn't say that AVG needs to be eliminated, because it does have value, but I agree with him basically. I'm more of a fan of using all three slash stats (BA/AVG/SLG) together, it paints a pretty complete picture of the kind of hitter a guy is.
  5. Wow you regulars weren't kidding about all the crazies that come out of the woodwork when the team does bad. Yeah. Pleasant, isn't it? It's always the same dudes, too.
  6. don"t look now but it the Astros are in the crew Rear view Mirror. Were you expecting them to put the division away in May? It's a long season of up's and down's. They were bound to lose a few games. It doesn't change the fact that they're a solid team. The Phillies are pretty good.
  7. Turnbow pitched bad. They lost. It was bound to happen at one point or another this year. Oh well, life goes on. I haven't done psychoanalysis on Turnbow, so I'm not going to forecast a collapse. I think he just had a bad game and was rusty from not having worked for a while. The season isn't over, and this game will have no more lasting effect than if they would have been blown out. Live to play another day.
  8. Kind of unfortunate that Suppan and Capuano had to have their "back to earth" starts in this series.
  9. Nice work Spurling. He's really not that bad of a pitcher. I agree. Dessens can actually be called a "good" pitcher, I think.
  10. Those were money pitches. The type of pitches you expect your ace to make when there are a lot of reporters present at the park that form the casual fan's opinion about who is good at baseball and who isn't.
  11. Looks like that triple would have been a fine catch had Hall been able to get there. Well, it would have been a double if he hadn't dove at it when he had zero chance of catching it.
  12. Um... yeah. Safe to say we don't have Jim Edmonds on our hands yet.
  13. I've gotta say. That was a ridiculous throw.
  14. That was head's up by Counsell. Possibly not very smart, but with Gotay backpedaling, a decent thought.
  15. Looked like Sheets decided he was done messing around and dialed the velocity up 5 MPH during that Pelfrey AB. Either that or FSN did some adjusting.
  16. Sheets last 4 starts: 22.1 IP, 2.42 ERA, 1-0, 13 K, 6 BB, 2 HR For those who think he hasn't been excellent. Once his K rate picks back up, he's pretty much going to be scary. Today would be nice for that. That said, they could get swept in NY, and it doesn't mean anything (unless you're a media member who thinks a season hinges on three games in May)- which is cool. They're really good and so are the Mets, I just don't see what the big deal is about this game, and why Sheets "needs" to "prove" he's a good pitcher.
  17. Mench has owned on Sosa (obviously small sample of 8 AB's), so that's probably the reasoning that Ned used, coupled with Gross sort of struggling.
  18. Anyone remeber this? Adrian Hernandez started got pulled in the 5th having given up no hits, but had walked 7? Adrian also batted right-handed in his first plate apperance, but went lefty after that. Yes. Very well. Didn't Kinney come in out of the pen in that game and kind of save the day?
  19. And remember a year ago we were all wondering the same thing with Gallardo, who was also dominating the FSL (although I'm not sure to the same level Inman is). When does Brevard start to get the "High Desert treatment" and get skipped by the top pitchers in the organization? To me it's almost useless for them to be there.
  20. i'm with you on that Brett, though i think Joe Thatcher should get a chance before we move Manny to the pen... Just to clarify my thoughts on this - I think Parra would only be in the pen this season for the stretch run. I still think he's definitely a starter in the future.
  21. I agree with that. I think Parra went there to kind of get re-acclimated a little, then move up to AAA. For those wanting a second lefty in the Brewers pen in August and September, I think that's your man.
  22. Thank God. Dude. It must suck for you that they are winning this season. You're not going to rile up as many people as you did last year. Gross is a good player, I don't know what he's done to show that he isn't. No one is saying he's the best player on the team, or something. They're saying he should get more starts than Gwynn, which is common sense, since he is better at baseball.
  23. He's worthy of a Gross...Gross....Gross -- YOU SUCK! chant in my opinion this year. He's hardly even played. Man. And when he has he has a .375 OBP and more walks than K's.
