  1. Mench should have definitely hit in that spot. One thing that is good about him there, aside from his demolition of LHP's, is that he pretty much always makes contact and he rarely GIDP's. I would say that that run scores most likely with Mench up.
  2. Why would you be angry at Hall? Because his 10th inning hit with a runner on 2nd was hit too hard to score the runner? He didn't get that bunt down. Granted, he shouldn't have been bunting to begin with, but he didn't get it down.
  3. If you have a beater, a push pull or drag is the way to go. I know Kocourek Chevrolet in Rib Mountain has one fairly often where you get $5 K minimum trade-in, there might be a dealership in your neck of the woods with something similar. Typically they have those in a buyer's market, like winter time. With your Accord, you're obviously not going to get that in a normal situation. I second MSC's recommendation of the Mazda or Nissan route. I personally haven't owned one, but my mom bought a used Mazda over 5 years ago that had a ton of miles on it, and it's still going and hasn't needed any major repairs at all. She commutes probably about 300 miles a week for work.
  4. In order for Cordero to have stayed in, he would have had to hit, which wouldn't have made sense.
  5. I'd love to see him with the Brewers, but I'll be happy if he's an A (which makes the most sense). I don't think it's "desperate" to want Bonds with the Brewers. I fail to see how wanting one of the 10 best hitters in the league is a bad thing. He's a great hitter and he'd help the Brewers score runs. As far as I'm concerned that's all that matters.
  6. Kind of hard to describe... the guy, Matt Berninger, sings in sort of a monotone voice and the songs themselves are really restrained. I love them, after reading the article I'm not sure you would (though I love Pinkerton, too). It's kind of sad, slow stuff. I've seen them compared to Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen, and Tom Waits, but the only one that I think sticks is comparing them to Tindersticks. They do have the whole "bleary, 2 A.M." feel of Waits I guess. There are hooks and melodies, though.? Their album "Alligator" is sort of their poppier one, though they're definitely not inaccessible at all, but the albums require repeated listens for the most part. The most recent one "Boxer" is one of my favorite albums of the year to this point (maybe my favorite).? Here's a couple videos (both of tracks from "Boxer"): "Fake Empire" on Letterman "Start a War" (acoustic)
  7. Cool, dude. Being on the cover of a magazine featuring an article about The National makes you alright in my book.
  8. I agree with end and Russ. Braun is easily athletic enough to play LF decently, and if nothing else he can't hurt the team as much out there as he can at 3B. I don't believe all that much in a defensive move negatively impacting a player's offense, and I definitely don't worry about it with Braun because I don't think he spends a ton of time worrying about his defense anyhow. Like someone else said about Weeks - defense is for players who can't hit. But, I think we all know that Hall's going to be in CF next year.
  9. Russ, upon seeing your thread title I figured you were posting from the hospital because things are underway NOW. I thought the same thing. If there is anyone hardcore enough to post on BF.net while their wife is giving birth, it's Russ. Congrats, and obviously the baby understands your circumstances and is being as accomodating as possible.
  10. When your K rate drops 3.5 per game, your BB rate goes up 1.4 per game, and your HR rate also goes up slightly, it is a down year. The thing that's good is that there's a lot of cushion in between the area of the stratosphere where Sheets normally is, and where "bad" pitchers are. I think his control problems are really due to being injured and never 100% this season, hopefully next year he bounces back to his dominant self again. He's still an ace, but he's not the guy he was last year or years prior to it. The really big positive is that he's going to throw about 160 innings if all goes well, which is 50+ more than last season. Still less than we would like him to have, obviously, but that's out of his control.
  11. Why in the world would a professional athlete write blogs on MySpace? I could understand having an account to try and pick up girls on the road and such, but to maintain a blog is really poor judgement on his part.
  12. Zumaya is another one (and Rodney though he isn't that young) of those guys. Joba Chamberlain lately. Ryan Madson when he was setting up Wags. Dotel/Lidge also setting up Wagner. There's lot of those kinds of guys, but as stated by SoCal, the ones the Brewers had in line for that role didn't pan out as well as planned.
  13. Wow, I didn't think Braun would take that huge of a hit. Eighteen runs below average according to RAA2. Tulo, on the otherhand, is 25 runs above average according to that metric. That's almost 4.5 wins. Wow. This means we can't even go all stathead on the guy and be like "You idiot, look at their WARP3's, you uninformed moron."
  14. I think you need to go out and sign a few 10 day contracts (yeah, I know it's an NBA thing) and see where that leads you.
  15. Okkervil River is excellent. I liked "Black Sheep Boy" a lot, but I like "The Stage Names" even more. I'm shocked at the presence of another Margot fan here. That is a very good album, to be sure.
  16. Has anyone seen "The Bridge" (the doc about Golden Gate jumpers)? If so, what should I watch next: Friedmans or "The Bridge"? "The Bridge" is really good, too. If you are able to easily get past the fact that you are watching people end their lives, and look at what the movie is about (to me, it's the question of what makes these people do it?), you will like it. It is surprising how tasteful it is. They are very different films, though, and oddly the one with the people jumping off the bridge is probably easier to stomach.
  17. I don't think the Brewers interest in re-signing Cordero is really that high. I think they're totally content with letting him walk and taking the picks, they need to replenish the system a little because of all the guys they have graduated. They're going to need to have replacements for some of their players (Fielder, etc.) in three years or so, plus having upper-echelon minor league talent is a huge trading chip, since the team as currently constructed is going to contend for the playoffs for the next 3-5 years or so.
  18. I've recently become a huge fan of Sam Adams Light. I love it. The last month or so, I drink either that or Sierra Nevada. I like Guinness, too. On the topic of New Glarus, Dancing Man Wheat is awesome.
  19. The nights are mightly cold in Peoria in January, and sometimes Shouse has gotta warm up. I think logan is pretty much right, married couples probably don't see one another very often during the season.
  20. How do you know that they intentionally conceived children, so as to be born during the season? Sometimes it just happens.
  21. A Bill Hicks once said (about Jesse Helms at the time), "anyone that far to the right is hiding a deep dark secret". Haggard is living proof of this. On topic, that is a great documentary, and surprisingly fair, so are the others on Kat's list (which is a great list, by the way) - if you like "creepy" docs, his recommendation of "Capturing the Friedmans" fits that very well, also. It's excellent.
  22. Turnbow pitching last night does factor into the decision, because he historically is bad on zero rest, as Brian said. There was no reason for him to have pitched last night, since the game was in hand by the time he came in (regardless of them blowing leads this year, you cannot actually expect them to squander a 5 run lead against the likes of the Pirates). The "manage like it's the last game" philosophy is the only reason I can see for why he used him last night, but that's just not a smart move, when there are more games, including one the next day. I'm not even saying he should have used Linebrink, but why is Cordero not considered as an option? He was on three days of rest, with his last outing being 11 pitches on Saturday. He could throw two innings and probably be fine. Using Turnbow today was definitely the right move. Using him last night was not.
  23. I'm with Brian. Why Turnbow pitched last night is impossible to comprehend. You can't "manage every game like it's the last one" when there are in fact more games to be played.
