  1. It looks like the Brewers are about .8 ERA over the average in the first half for relievers. If they average roughly 3 innings/game, that's a little over .26 runs/game over the average. Maybe Russ can help here...over 81 games, giving up an extra quarter run per game...how many losses is that? I guess another way would be to look at Russ's analysis on how many blown saves we've had over the average. I'm not sure how that works, since Veras or KRod have blown saves by not holding leads as well. I think they have 15 blown saves ytd with Axford having 5 of them. If he was closer to 1/8 of the attempts, and adding in fewer blown saves (or holds) for the 7th & 8th inning guys...not sure what that would be. I'm guessing these ways would put the pen adding 3-5 losses so far. Maybe expecting a repeat of 2011 was asking too much, but I certainly thought they'd be at least league average.
  2. I agree with Fondy on Ax. His FB velocity is up to 96.2 vs. 95.5 last year according to fangraphs. He's striking more guys out, but he's also walking more and giving up HRs that he wasn't doing last year. While he may have been extraordinarily good last year, I would think his 2010 stats are acheivable. I think they need to get a hold of the pitching coach he had in the minors that corrected his mechanics last time. http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=9059&position=P
  3. Going into the season this looked like the least of this team's concerns. Now with the team finally scoring runs and the starting pitching on a nice run, the bullpen has become the team's achilles heal. If we had the bullpen of 2011, they'd probably be knocking on the division leader's door. Let's not make this a vent thread. The questions are why are they struggling and what if anything do they do about it? According to fangraphs, they have the second worst ERA in NL but some of the peripherals look more middle of the pack. I'll defer to the stat experts, but how much is bad luck versus bad performance? It also seems there have been some comments about the pen not being completely healthy. BA & Rock were discussing this yesterday as was Haudricourt. Is this just an excuse after these bad performances or are these guys really dinged up? To me it seems something is off in Axford's mechanics, but Loe, Veras and KRod may all be playing hurt. What do they do about it? Making a trade when they are this far back doesn't make sense. Do they bring up a Peralta or Thornburg and give them a shot at middle relief or are they better having them continue to work towards next year's rotation? Let's try and keep the discussion on the rails...no Turnbow references please. Discuss...
  4. Tough to completely pin all of yesterday on Wolf. It seemed he was gassed after 6, but all the bullpen issues of late probably kept RR from making the move. Wolf hasn't pitched great this year, but he's also been snake bitten in starts like yesterday.
  5. The Marlins seem like a slightly worse version of the Brewers. If they actually had fans, they'd probably be really frustrated.
  6. Those were balls Corey has struck out on countless times...nice work. Rickie the walk machine too.
  7. I don't think anyone thought he was good, it's just someone who was cheap needed to backup Gonzalez. If things would have went well, he rarely would have seen the field. The guy is awful, but so are the other alternatives. I don't see why everyone is so up in arms between Izturis, Ransom and Maysonet...they are all just different forms of blech that teams are forced to play without an adequate replacement. An alternative was to resign Hairston, but that cost real money and the payroll was already stretched. If we were making a run, we'd probably go out and get a Hairston type. We aren't so we're stuck with blech.
  8. Can you imagine opening the roof in the ninth if we were playing the Cards...
  9. I guess you can go safety with Rickie's speed. He probably should have slid there. Some impressive bunts tonight between Maldy & Aoki.
  10. The NFL pre-season, the NBA regular season and KRod before he loads the bases are all the same. Nothing really happens until they are done.
  11. http://espn.go.com/mlb/allstar12/story/_/id/8123276/tony-la-russa-all-stars-draw-ire-milwaukee-brewers-cincinnati-reds Interesting part of the story that the Brewers moved up Greinke's next start given the off day to give him a shot at pitching at the All Star game. It says LaRussa was unaware...not sure I buy that, but seems this could set him up to be added. Cueto & Dusty also have some great quotes against LaRussa. Something along the lines of Cueto stating LaRussa was mad because he went out with one of his girlfriends. I can't make that stuff up.
  12. I think it was more about where the weight is on the swing. Stepping into it is ok for tempo, but the key is keeping the weight balanced like your son is doing versus putting it into the front foot. I'm no expert and my kids play softball, not baseball, so I'll defer to any expert. Just thought it was interesting.
  13. Had an interesting discussion with a former MLB player who was giving the sons of a colleague of mine lessons. He mentioned how Braun has the type of swing they try and teach kids these days and used Paul Molitor as an example of how not to swing. That's a big change in philosophy since I was playing. He said Molitor was the last successful front foot hitters and no one outside of slap hitters can get away with that anymore. I was always taught to emulate his perfect level swing and step into the ball. That's not how they teach them today. As 'stache mentioned, Braun has the perfect torque and balance in his swing. He has a beatuiful downward plane on his swing that generates that backspin. I love how he prepares before he steps into the box with his downward stroke for muscle memory. The guy is not only a physical talent, he has an incredible, efficient and perfect swing. He's one smart dude. I always felt the only things missing in his early years from having a HoF career were plate discipline and health...at this point it's just a matter of health. The guy is incredible.
  14. Thanks for the update Rickey. Pretty obvious the Brewers family is shaken up by this. Thoughts and prayers go to his family, and anyone else who is grieving at this time.
  15. Can't get too bitter...remember when it was us staying up all night punching our guys in?
  16. That first HR he hit last night was ridiculous. 2 strike pitch out of the zone exactly where Miley wanted it...and he puts it out of the park. Ryan Braun is really good at baseball.
  17. Gomez forced Montero throw from his knees...that set off the whole chain of events. He had such a huge jump Montero should have sat on the ball.
  18. It wouldn't take much to replace Rickie this year, he's having a horrible year. Whether Gennett can do what Rickie has done over the prior 5 seasons is another story. Outside of injuries, he's been one of the best 2B in the game.
  19. I'm starting to think my pre-season prediction of Rickie Weeks as the NL MVP may be in jeopardy. Still love ya Rick, but geeze that was ugly.
  20. Yo's ERA back under 4.00. 14/17 quality starts is certainly getting the job done, but yes another inning per start would be great given our bullpen.
