  1. Kalle is getting the whole picture this weekend...the good, the bad...and now some ugly.
  2. There's no baseball reason to gripe about today. It's just spring training starting early. Keeping guys healthy, having a starter who will be gone take up innings. It just doesn't matter, but if I was RR I'd let the ticket office tell me which days to sit guys. They'll need as many of the casual fans as they can get to stay interested in 2013.
  3. Maybe Stan Kyles should get the Astros manager job given his extensive experience as a scapegoat.
  4. It bums me out to see the Cubs doing smart things. Even if Castro isn't "elite" (depending on how one defines it), he should be a top quartile SS for the life of the contract. I'm worried the Cubs could wind up dominating the division in the second half of the decade.
  5. JSOnline cited this article from mlb.com on Sheet's continued comeback... http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20120809&content_id=36415484&vkey=news_atl&c_id=atl Keep in rolling Sheeter...could make for an interesting series at Miller Park in Mid-September. It's a ways away, but if things kept to form he'd get the start on the 12th. Hope he gets a big time standing O.
  6. Seems that Gomez has made some adjustments recently that has got his SLG up. For a long time, his tools pushed coaches into trying to turn him into an OBP guy. Seemed rational given his speed that he could be a great top of the order guy, but he just doesn't have the plate discipline. Trying that nice easy swing that takes the ball up the middle or the other way hasn't worked on a sustanable basis either. I think the coaches have finally realized that, and they are just turning him loose. Let him get the 15+ HRs and SLG to .425 if the OBP is going to stay at that .300 level. With his glove he's still quite valuable. It also means he should be batting 7th or 8th. It doesn't really matter this year since we're out of it, but if the coaches have realized enough to let him swing away they should also realize he's better off lower in the order. A plus plus fielder that hits .250/.300/.425 has plenty of value.
  7. No kidding. Does this team have to constantly do everything they can to help the Cardinals? I keep telling myself we are just hurting the Cards draft position...other than that I'd have rather reversed the sweeps.
  8. I would suggest not getting bent out of shape over guys that won't be on the team next year...all they can do now is help our draft position.
  9. Pirates...good call guys. I think the 1-0 vs the Mets i was thinking of he might have lost.
  10. Can Yo get the 1-0 win with the only RBI? Not quite like the 1-0 game where he homered (Mets?)...but it would be cool.
  11. I hear ya MJ...it's a rough year when we're debating which player is truly the worst in baseball (I'm still sticking with Yuni). What a joy it's been to be able to watch them both!
  12. Kinda like the Brewers signing of Izturis, they went out and found the one guy worse than Yuni. Izturis was signed as a backup that got pressed into duty. Yuni was a starter. While Izturis is truly an awful hitter, at least he can field the position. What made Yuni so truly awful was he not only stunk at the plate, but was a horrendous fielder. His only redeeming qualities were he occassionaly ran into a few fastballs he could hit out and gave some nice high fives in the dugout. I'd actually take Izturis...he can only hurt you in one facet of the game. Highly unlikely either are playing MLB this time next year.
  13. Well, I have been missing the complaining about the Brewers defense this year. I'm sure Yuni would like to retire as a Brewer as well. As bad as Yuni was last year, the team still won 96 games and he actually played well in the post-season. From that perspective he didn't really cost them. However, as pointed out in another thread...sure would have been nice to do the Furcal deal.
  14. You think the Cards will introduce the true MVPs of the 82 series? Rollie Finger's dead arm and that crappy AstroTurf they would pound the ball into. Should have beaten them in 5.
  15. Living out in LA, I've missed most of the recent big games in person. The family couldn't afford tickets to any big playoff games back in '82. My memories are a little more random. I was at the game Reggie Jackson jumped Mike Caldwell...then Caldwell slammed his bat on the ground. I remember being at a rain delay game as a kid (I think against the Indians), that was my first exposure to drunk people. As the delay went on people kept running out on to the field and getting chased by the grounds crew. I thought it was pretty cool...my Dad not so much. Henderson's steals record. Canseco 40/40 Molitor stealing 3 bases in a row. Was at several games in the 20/30's of Molitor's streak. The two games before Easter Sunday. Caught a foul ball once...it hit in the upper deck and came down. 1st inning from Greg Brock off Jack Morris. Picture day 1979...the lines were long for Yount, Molitor, etc...but I got my picture taken with Augie...that was awesome. My first trip to Miller Park was the game the power went out...came back for the makeup with barely anyone there and sat right by homeplate. Have no idea who they played or who won, but odds are it wasn't the Brewers. More than anything I remember the grass...walking into County Stadium and getting that first glimpse through the tunnel of the field. That grass was so green. Still the coolest thing I've seen.
  16. Lock. Total lock. Done deal. 2 weeks ago. Yeah how is Olt still on the Rangers I thought he was on the Marlins? When did Olt get traded back to the Rangers? He'll probably pass through waivers and be gone by the end of the month.
  17. Casey never had the long track record of success that Rickie Weeks has had. Weeks has been a consistent top level 2B for 5-6 years, outside of the injuries. He deserves plenty of rope. McGehee didn't have the track record. DM didn't ride him through the post season, he switched to Hairston after Weeks came back.
  18. Didn't the Byzantines lose their empire after a local sports talk station got on their case for underperforming in a couple invasions. Rickie looks like Rickie...driving the ball the other way with power.
  19. I don't know what the right number is, but DM did just about all he could do. The return for Greinke was the highest the market would allow and could fill a nice hole down the line. More pitching is better too. The only way to do more would have been to make a decision to trade ARam or Hart...I'm not sure I'm on board with that so I'm ok he didn't go there. He was successful in replacing the lost run production from losing Prince, so I'd keep that lineup together for a shot at the playoffs the next couple years. Maybe a lower probability than we thought this year, but they'll be competitive. Unfortunately they didn't get a shot to test the market on Marcum, Wolf or KRod...but their injuries and/or poor showings cost them a chance. Can't pin that on DM.
  20. I guess playing the Astros is kinda like sending the entire team down to the minors for three games...I think we'd all agree they needed that. Now don't get too carried away you Brewers...we've got some draft positions to worry about.
  21. I'd like to trade the Pirates to the NL East for the Marlins. The Marlins seem to be the Peter Angelos Orioles v. 2.0.
  22. I actually think Anaheim is the perfect place for Greinke. Moneywise it's big market...they can pay whatever the big boys can. It is run like a real organization without the crazy egos and is likely to remain competitive for a long time. It's also not a fishbowl like the east coast markets or Chicago. There is nowhere near the media focus there is up here in LA for the Dodgers. For a big market, it's really low key.
