  1. I'd absolutely take Renteria over Betancourt, but not at that price. I also think it's funny that Betancourt has already filled the Suppan role of least favorite Brewer before he even takes the field. Maybe we should sign Gagne to take the heat off of him.
  2. Looks like the Renteria option is closed... http://www.mlbtraderumors...sign-edgar-renteria.html
  3. The Cubs could really be dangerous if managed properly. They have by far the most potential financial resources in the division. If I were them I wouldn't rush it. Their payroll is still bloated with older, declining players. Their minor league talent is still a couple years away. I'd milk the lovable losers thing for a couple years and get the financial house in order. Work on a stadium, TV, etc...then unleash the financial resources on the division with a vengeance. The good thing for us is they shouldn't be a major challenger in the Brewers near term window.
  4. I LOVE this move. Was hoping they'd add one more solid set up arm that wasn't a scrap heap guy and I was pulling for Saito (it really is Sigh-toe). They should be able to keep him fresh with a better pen, starters that go deeper and no Ken Macha to abuse him. I don't know if all these moves will pan out or not, time will tell, but DM and MA deserve huge credit for the way they've set this team up to compete this year.
  5. If the market holds like this next year, it's a good sign for the Brewers there will be adequate reasonably priced replacements for Prince that could limit the drop off.
  6. Darn optimists...I have them doing much worse.
  7. Yes, at this point I am concerned that aside from atrocious defense this is the team's weak spot. Some good points above though...our starters should assure they are used for 2-3 innings most games versus 4-5. That should help keep the innings in the better relievers hands. Doug still has time to add another arm or two as the price comes down. I am hoping they have a little money left for another decent set up man. I worry their luck could run out on the scrap heap relievers like it did with the old man FA starters. I do wonder if Rogers could play a critical role in the pen before year end.
  8. This may be a non-baseball topic, but I'll roll with it. There are plenty of screwed up things out here in California, but I'm glad they are locking up this criminal for a long time. It won't bring those kids back, but maybe it will keep this thug from doing it again. Unfortunately with prison overcrowding he still might get out eventually. The Tavern League in Wisconsin has blocked the needed reform my old state needs for more strict rules. Having the most lenient DD laws in the country is not something to be proud of. I'm glad the Journal took them on last year...hopefully they keep the heat on to toughen up those laws. It's a real black eye for Wisconsin.
  9. Seems some decisions will rest on comfort attained by the coaches at certain positions. Catcher - 3 way battle to backup Lucroy IF reserve - Big question is how comfortable with Betancourt's defense. If it's just below average, they might lean to Gamel...if it's a complete black hole and it's beyond Counsell's ability to platoon and stay healthy, I'd go with Cruz. They'll likely have them both on the Nashville shuttle. Depth at SP is a big deal too. I wonder if Cappy gets the first shot at #5 with Narvy in long relief. They'll need 7-8 starters before year end and I'd rather use both of them before pulling the Manny Parra only open in case of emergency or against the Cardinals lever. I'd also rather have Gamel over Boggs, just because I'd like his bat off the bench more. I'm just not sure they can work that with him as the fifth OF. Maybe they can keep him up unless Hart or Braun get hurt. As far as Boggs, DM has been pretty good at finding these kind of guys so maybe there is more to him than the numbers show...we'll see.
  10. Option two is the likely winner. Braun-Hart-Gamel might be the worst OF defensive combo in league history. Gomez-Dickerson is solid defensively and not so far below average at the plate the team can't handle it. Betancourt is a bigger problem since I'm not sure Counsell can stay healthy with a full platoon. We also need him backing up Weeks & McGahee. There has to be another decent defender out there we can get as a plan B for SS if Betancourt proves too problematic.
  11. I'll go with 88 to start, but I do see upside. I'm starting to talk myself into Greinke being the NL Cy Young winner. If Marcum & Gallardo are around 3ish ERAs, Wolf is high 3s and the 5th starter is not a black hole...they are over 90. Biggest concerns are bullpen and defense. I'd also concur that SS is the positional weakspot on the team. They can handle a weak bat, but not a weak glove. That's why I'm not as bent out of shape on Gomez in CF...at least his D is good. Can Counsell be an average defender starting 60-80 games at SS? I'd also like to see another arm or two in that pen. EDIT: It does stink that our interleague is NYY, BOS, TB & MIN while the Cards have BAL, TOR, TB & KC and the Reds have BAL, TOR, TB & CLE. That has to be 1-2 relative wins we'll need to overcome.
  12. Maybe it reads worse than I intended. Just thinking that the team's midpoint expectation post some of those moves (a couple extensions) could be closer to .500 (think 78-80 wins) rather than the fall off the cliff scenario that is a real possibility after 2012. Just factoring in what they currently have, their budget, what can be reasonably kept and that their minor league system will contribute very little to help them with either talent or trading chips in that timeframe. I also don't believe they'll be able to extend Greinke...I hope I'm wrong. The next two years could be very special. Post-2012 will require some help. In the meantime, there's quite a bit to enjoy to worry too much about 2013...but I do think they will have their work cut out for them.
  13. Not doom & gloom at all. Just looking at the midpoint of reasonable expectations. I just can't see resigning all three. If Greinke pitches like I think he can he may be in for a Prince-like contract in 2 years. I'm not so sure he'll want to give that up. I hope he pitches that well...that would make the next two years special. Marcum could be much more affordable right now. Weeks as well. I would bet those two get deals done before Spring Training. Hope I'm wrong and Greinke signs an affordable long term extension, but right now I'm betting against it.
  14. Cards & Crew are by far the best staffs with the Reds as a solild #3. Besides general health...that #1 point above may be the key. Carpenter regressed from utterly dominant to just dominant. A little more regression at his age and Greinke returning to '09 form puts the Brewers ahead. At this point I might go slightly in the Cards favor, but the Brewers have more optionality to the upside with their youth. A guy like Greinke not only makes you think they have a shot at the playoffs, but also a shot in the playoffs. Very curious on Garcia as well. I can't see him repeating '10, but I could be wrong. If he repeats that's one heckuva #3.
  15. I'd like to see them extend Rickie. It's going to be tough to keep things going after 2012. Having some more Braun, Weeks, maybe Hart, Gallardo, Axford and probably a Marcum extension could keep them within spitting distance of .500 post-Prince and Greinke leaving. You never know if DM can find a few scrap heap gems to get lucky on to keep the team competitive and the fans interested while he rebuilds the farm. If it's a reasonable deal that factors in Rickie's injury history it will probably be worth doing.
  16. I like the current unis. The logo and color scheme are solid. I would like to see "Milwaukee" across all the road unis, not just the blue one. I also like the ball and glove stuff. Not just because it reminds me of the past (although I am a child of that era). I think the design is unique, creative and timeless. The color scheme is dated, but the logo is cool. The 1990's MB logo was complete crap. Horrible logo, colors and even worse teams. I am going through significant hours of therapy to get those unis out of my head!
  17. So now the question is who is this masked man...brewcrewfan2011???
  18. Biggest area will probably be scrap heap relievers on minor league contracts. DM has been able to uncover a few gems over the years...he'll need to again this year. Agree with Briggs as well...we'd all love to see a replacement for Betancourt, but it's probably him with 60 starts or so from Counsell. They will likely view it as he's too expensive not to give a shot to.
  19. I wonder how much revenues could be up this year? Could they push the payroll to $90 mil for another piece? Another bullpen arm and a defensive SS could help.
  20. Have we been spending the last 28 years reminiscing about that great 82 team or bemoaning the loss of guys like David Green & Kevin Bass? Do we all sit around and talk about how great our Power 50 looked in 2004 or whatever year? Heck, I hope the Royals win the series with these guys someday. Hopefully after we put together a great season of memories! At some point you gotta go for it. This is the payoff for the picks and the farm system. Whether it works out or not, I like the effort. They'll have a bounty of picks over the next few years as most of these guys leave and maybe they get the next Braun or Fielder after a couple 90 loss seasons. Let's worry about that later...hopefully we'll have some great highlight films to tide us over.
  21. Maybe we can get Jack Z back by the time the mountain of draft picks comes our way
  22. In 2011, Cain> Gomez, Betancourt/Counsell = Escobar, Grienke>>>>>>>>>>>TBD scrap heap stiff Trading long term for short, maybe delay to Monday to work extension with Grienke.
  23. I still like Billy Hall...I hope he doesn't get booed on his return to MP...but I will be pulling for some 0-4 with 4 Ks. Thank goodness we don't play the 'stros on Mother's Day.
  24. When you consider the number of farm hands that have made the leap to the bigs, that we've traded 2 first round picks and have a bust and a non-signee in the last two years in the first round, it seems natural that the system would be down. Hopefully with 2 top 15 picks next year and some comp picks over the next couple years they will do as good of a job as they have in the past and reload.
  25. RIP Bob. I met him at a card show when I lived in Milwaukee. There was a huge line for Billy Jo Robidoux and no one for Feller. I got him to sign some things and then engaged him in a very nice conversation. As pointed out, he was a great guy but full of bluster. It was well intentioned and very entertaining. I remember him saying he threw way faster than Nolan Ryan. He felt the only pitcher who ever threw harder was Walter Johnson. It was interesting to hear his take on the young guys too. Always glad I got to spend a little time with a great one like Bob Feller. RIP Bob And thank you for your service to our country.
