  1. If either the Brewers or Cubs get Garza I think it's a win-win. If we get him, the Brewers are a serious contender in the division the next 1-3 years. After the Marcum trade, one more starter and they are right there. If the Cubs have to pay up, they aren't going anywhere this year anyway so it won't make that big of a difference. Their Double-A team was stacked last year...eroding that talent would be better for the Brewers down the road.
  2. Our pitching was sooooo strong when we had a guy like Jason Kendall behind the plate because he could "call a good game". Why don't we just buy Nieves a ticket and have him flash signals from the front row behind home plate if he's so damn good?
  3. Regardless of how the talent plays out on both sides, I'm just glad after seeing those pictures that I don't have to pretend to like Lawrie just because he's a Brewer.
  4. Overall I like the trade. No trade is certain...they only have probabilities and values that represent current expectations. In that regard DM seems to have gotten a decent return for a top prospect. The Brewers have a plus offense, a decent bullpen and rotten starting pitching...but starting out with Yo, Wolf and Marcum is not bad. They would have been serious playoff contenders with simply average starting pitching the last two seasons. If they can find an acceptable #4, they should be there in 2011. It's not like they have completely mortgaged the future to get Marcum. They have him for 2 years vs. 6+ for Lawrie, but Marcum has a little more certainty given he's a proven player. Lawrie looks good at a young age, but is still developing so his future is less certain...maybe more upside, but downside as well. We have Braun, Hart & Weeks (hopefully with an extension) and hopefully Gamel can fill a portion of the hole left by losing Prince. It would be nice to hang on to a player like Lawrie, but they do have options and if they don't get some pitching it won't matter. I've also heard enough second hand that Lawrie is not exactly a model citizen in the clubhouse to not be that sad to see him go.
  5. It is amazing that Braun may now be in the upper half of defensive LF in the division.
  6. He is not the same player he was a few years ago...I wouldn't touch him.
  7. Fire up that windmill Eddie!!! Really glad he's back.
  8. I wonder where he stands on "Untuckem"?
  9. I was at the two games before that...they were electric. Couldn't miss Mom's brunch on Easter Sunday. When Deer and Sveum hit those homers, you could hear the people cheering all over our neighborhood. Everyone had the game on...we could have gotten the full play by play without even turning on our own radio. That was one heckuva weekend and game. As much as I wish I'd have been at the game, it was fun to share that moment with the whole extended family. Great memories.
  10. They probably are all reasonably the same from a WAR standpoint. One difference could be if Bobby V sells more tickets that the other guys, that's worth something...or at least it pays for the extra $1-2mm it costs to hire him. I think it's somewhat reasonable to say he'd bring a little more excitement to the field than a few of the other guys. Torre generated a little of that out here when he came. In the end he was good when his players were and not so much when they stunk, but he probably sold some tickets.
  11. Badger Football...just awesome.
  12. Yeah, maybe we could hire Mike Sherman and Braun could just run the team.
  13. They barely mentioned them in the first nine innings. He should have just renamed the series "Baseball...in New York". According to most so called baseball historians, Brooklyn is still reeling from the loss of the Dodgers even though their attendance stunk, yet Milwaukee, the top city in attendance in the NL for much of the 50s lost their team after the fans became apathetic. They gloss over the fact attendance went down after the team announced they were leaving. Burns barely mentions the Braves, despite their move being one of the most significant events in baseball history. It was the huge success of Milwaukee that prompted the massive move west. They all forget Milwaukee, Baltimore and KC happened before Los Angeles.
  14. I stayed at the Hilton Back Bay last time (perfectly fine albeit fairly pedestrian...I used miles). I believe the Brewers were right across the street at the Sheraton. They have a Starbucks downstairs...can you guess which former manager I saw there. It was semi-long but walkable to the stadium. There's plenty of restaurants and bars in the Back Bay. For more of the historical sites, I'd suggest staying closer to Boston Common then cab to Fenway. The city was very crowded that weekend with all the college graduations...it may be the same weekend in 2011 so reserving something early may not be a bad idea if you can cancel it.
  15. Jack Clark just insulted every kid still in diapers and their parents...the nerve. Next thing you know parents in St. Louis will be allowing their kids to drive their trikes after too much formula. These classy kids may start pointing to the heavens in some kind of "formula Jesus" motion after polishing off an 8-ouncer or winging the bottle at some other kid in Mommy and Me after disrespecting the unwritten rules of rug time.
  16. When did we become grammarfan.net? Tulo's biggest issue has been staying healthy. I'd still rather have Braun, but Tulo's D is a definite plus. It will be interesting to see what happens with Braun's power stats over the next couple seasons. If the downward trajectory continues, a strong case could certainly be made for a healthy Tulo. Dude is en fuego.
  17. Just two games in LA and once again, not on a weekend...uggh. Can't even get down to SD for the mini-series there. Agree on the Boston trip. I did that in '08 and had a blast (except for the sweep part). If you haven't done the trip, I highly recommend it. I am planning a little biz trip to NYC for the Yanks series. I haven't seen them vs. the Yanks in NYC since Yount & Molitor were still on the team.
  18. Indeed...I wish they would have retired Cooper awhile ago. I'd probably put Cooper ahead of Fingers as well. I like Sheets, thought he was a good Brewer...our best player many years, but not even the Bucks would retire his number.
  19. In retrospect, they probably shouldn't have retired Rollie's number. Trevor would be far lower on the list. I think some type of honor in the future would be nice...walk of fame, permanent display for the #600 on the concourse...something of that nature to honor him and keep a slight tie to Milwaukee. He was a great player last year, not so much this year, but always a class act, super teammate and a great ambassador of the game. He will always be a Padre, and rightfully so.
  20. Awesome moment. Way to stick with it Trevor. Carried off the field by the two team leaders too...just a great, great moment for Trevor, the Brewers and baseball.
  21. These are some great stories...I'm afraid mine pale in comparison. One funny one was during 1983 Gorman, Vuke and Uecker were signing autographs at some lawn and garden place in Brookfield. There was a huge line and my Mom took me down and waited over an hour to get their autographs. We finally get to the front, having been warned due to the crowd they will only sign one item each and put this oversized baseball card of Gorman down in front of him. He pauses, looks at me and apologetically says, "kid, I'll sign anything you've got but this picture is so ugly I just can't do it." At that point Vuke and Uecker grab the photo and launch into a whole comedy routine about how ugly the picture of Gorman is. My Mom was crying from laughing so hard. They were so nice and funny they each signed about a half a dozen items. I also ran into Jeromy Burnitz out here in LA at Starbucks. He was meeting a buddy who worked in my building. We wound up chatting for about 10 minutes...he was very cool. Saw Curtis Leskanic visiting sick kids at a hospital...he was really great with the kids.
  22. I'm with you guys, why waste the option for such a short time. They could even send Cain down for a short time if they felt they were that desperate to keep an extra pitcher, but they shouldn't have to. With the extra days off here, they should be fine to Sept 1 so sending down a 13th pitcher makes more sense. I'd also like to see Gomez in AAA next year. He's got plenty of tools, but seems to lack the maturity of Cain. Maybe he's been pushed too fast given his tools. At this point he may have lost a great deal of his trade value, so why not have him try and grow up in AAA next year. He wouldn't be taking up any high prospect's spot with Cain in Milwaukee.
