  1. I actually dont' have a problem with Teix over Sabathia. Teix had a very good offensive year and was the best or 2nd best defensive 1B in baseball as well. Some of the other A vs B ones bug me though, the system obviously needs a revamp.
  2. Juan Cruz and healthy aren't words that go together too well. In 2008 he had an oblique injury and a neck injury. In 2007 he had shoulder problems that put him on the DL In 2006 he had shoulder problems that put him on the DL I'm not saying to avoid him but I certainly wouldn't give him more than 2 years.
  3. The formula is terrible that is how~ The same way Cameron is a type B when he should be an A.
  4. Weeks was not one of the 6 or 7 worst 2B in baseball defensively last year(he wasn't the worst on the team either, Durham was) so again if he can't handle 2B then there a lot of players out there that can't handle it. I can't find a single defensive metric that says Weeks was terrible defensively last year and my eyes didn't see terrible defense either, just erratic. He wasn't great but he has shown quite a bit of improvement.
  5. Why are you using RBI to try to convince someone he isn't a scrub? Ibanez has a lot less of an impact on his RBI than Suzuki does, at least use some stats that matter.
  6. Also of note from the plus/minus link in that article we find that Weeks was not in the worst 2B list. Cano, Kinsler, Castillo, Lopez, Durham and Kent were all worse than him at the very least. And here is another link to ratings... http://www.beyondtheboxsc...est-second-basemen-of-200 Weeks comes in at #14 with slightly positive defensive value as well.
  7. Using jinaz's numbers for 2008 he was 8.7 runs above replacement in 2008 and I know that number was higher in 2007. At roughly $4M per 10 runs above replacement that puts him right in the $3M range. In 2007 he was one of the best defensive players in the game playing 662 innings in the field without a single error. He is still an above average SS/2B defensively but in 2008 he played way too much 3B which hurt his value as it isn't as good a defensive position for him and obviously his offense is weaker at 3B. There is no way in heck he was paid 2-3 times his value the last two seasons, that is just way undervaluing defense to say something like that. He might not have quite earned his salary but it was pretty close. I'm glad we didn't pick up his option because his defense is slipping some but I couldn't let that comment slide either.
  8. You really have no legs to stand on here hauser42, I don't get your irrational hatrid of Sheets. Sheets second half ERA was 3.46 and his second half OPS agaisnt was .690. From the all star game until Sept 6th Sheets had a 2.77 ERA with a .621 OPS against and then trying to pitch through the arm soreness led to a bad final 3 games. Even with those final 3 starts included he was well above average. Even using your arbitrary point that tries to make him look as bad as he can he had a 3.55 ERA and .688 OPS against during that time and had no run support. We scored 1, 0, 2, 2, 3, 3 runs in his losses and he allowed 0, 0, 0 runs in the 3 wins. I mean seriously we all get that you don't like Sheets and you'll make stuff up to try to make him look bad so why even bother doing it at this point. If you want to have people respect your opinion at least try to be semi objective instead of letting your obvious bias cloud the posts.
  9. Weeks has been an above average hitter at 2B in his career so you are really stretching things by saying he wouldn't have made the big leagues if not picked where he was. He also is probably the best of the first 6 players picked that year and only about 7 of the top 30 players in that draft have been as good or better than him. So if we missed on Weeks in that draft then pretty much every team but 5 or 6 missed on it.
  10. I sure hope he doesn't even get the chance to prove you right. Even if Hall somehow hits 28 HR it probably will come with a .320ish OBP and will make him average at best at 3B. We most certainly can do better. If Hall is going to have any value it is as a MI, he just isn't a good enough hitter to carry value at 3B.
  11. Yep joepepsi, Sheets has had one really major injury in his career and they tried to bring him back early from it which triggered the relapse.
  12. It wasn't in 2007, he easily earned $3.4M in 2007 but in 2008 he was probably closer to only $3M. You can't undersell defense. I didn't want to keep Counsell mind you but I will argue to my death against his contract being a bad thing. He pretty much earned his money even in an extremely limited role.
  13. Joe Dillon has a career major league line of .257/.335/.374/.709 That is the definition of showing nothing in the majors at this point. Granted he hasn't had much of a chance yet but I stand by the fact he easily could be a AAAA player give his career so far. Especially considering he is 33 this season.
  14. Hardy is the only name that really stands out on that list as someone we got for much better value than where we drafted them. Parra was a draftee too but that was in 2001, was that before Jack? The most impressive thing about that list is just how many players are on it. I think we tend to over-rate Jack because he had a lot of primo picks in his day but he seems to have a decent eye for major league quality players at least. We haven't had very many complete duds under him except for guys who got injured.
  15. That is only for teams that were decent too. If we sign a FA from a team that has one of the first 15 picks we do not get their 1st round pick, we get their second pick.
  16. Ibanez is a pretty bad fielder(somewhere in the range of -7 to -13 runs) which offsets a chunk of his offense, add in the age factor and I'm not so sure we really want him for the price he'll likely be asking. If we trade Hart it could make some sense but if the suggestion is to sign Ibanez and move Hart to CF the net loss in defense probably makes the team worse than just keeping Cameron does and we probably end up paying more for the privilege.

  19. I'm not sure I'd say Fielder for Youkilis is unfair unless you really put a lot of stock into 2008 stats and ignore previous seasons. Youkilis probably had his career year last year at age 29 and you would probably expect Fielder to improve over last year at age 25 still, even if he most likely will hit his decline stage by age 29 or so. Having said that there is no way it warrents Gwynn for a real player on the backside either, especially not a young high upside pitcher. Gwynn is basically worthless as anything but a PR or minor league filler.
  20. Hopefully the first RH bench bat is Hall and the 2nd one is Kapler. Don't really need Dillon as the 3rd one. I guess it could come back to haunt us but it also wouldn't surprise me that Dillon ends up as a AAAA type guy since he has shown nothing at all in the majors yet.
  21. Counsell earned his salary in 2007 most likely but he really slipped defensively in 2008 and at his age I'm not sure he has anymore productive years in him. Glad they declined it. I agree that hopefully this moves Hall into super sub mode and we trade for or sign a real 3B.
  22. I'm not saying Cain wouldn't be worth Hardy, I'm just not sure he would to the point where I would call it a no brainer. Even highly mediocre pitchers can thrive in san fran because it is historically a weak hitting division and it is a flyball pitchers paradise. I'm also very worried about the workload that SF puts on its pitchers. I will be shocked if Cain and Lincecum are both healthy through 2010(1 or the other probably will be) and I won't be a tiny bit surprised if they both have major surgery before the end of 2010.
  23. The majority of Rockies hitters put up better than their road records once they leave. They get used to the way the ball moves in that park and it hurts them more than normal on the road. I wouldn't have a huge issue with trading for Holliday as long as they don't go overboard doing it.
  24. Good park factors at least attempt to neutralize things so the home teams players don't matter. I don't think any good park factors are out for 2008 yet though which is why I used ESPN's. Miller park is somewhere near neutral overall though, sometimes they come out with it as a slight pitcher park and sometimes as a slight hitter park.
