  1. It was a weak free agent class and other than getting in on the Bedard/Santana action I don't really see where a big move could have been made. I'm dubious about Kendall still but I do think the bullpen has gained a lot of depth and that is the important thing with a bullpen. I'd like to see Vargas dealt before the season starts though, we still do have too many pitchers and it is going to mean leaving at least one of our better arms in the minors to start the year.
  2. What do you mean by that! Brewers opening day lineup in 2004. Podsednik Counsell Spivey Jenkins Overbay Helms Grieve Moeller Sheets How things have changed in just four years, heh.
  3. K's drop at every level in the minors but keeping it at over 1 K per IP is still a good sign in AA.

  6. The 9th hitter will not get to leverage his SLG very much and will be setup to leverage OBP so Kendall is the most fitting guy. He is also the worst hitter in the lineup so you would want to minimize his ABs anyway.
  7. Kendall. I'd rather C was not a complete black hole offensively. Even a .340 OBP would make me happy enough with him. Plus it would shut up the Cub fans who talk so much smack about how bad he is.
  8. Let me say that while I think we can re-sign Sheets if we go to the playoffs this year, I don't really want the team to do it. I don't think a huge long term deal for a starter is a good idea unless they have a flawless health record and very few pitchers have that.
  9. If he stays healthy and we make the playoffs I think he stays a Brewer. This is no longer a small market team and with a playoff appearance I'm not so sure it is just mid market for the short term at least. The money is there to sign him if the attendence goes up enough.
  10. His last name isn't Selig and that is ok with me even if it is hard to spell.
  11. You have to make bad Cs pay, if you are smart about stealing bases it is a valid tool. When we play games at say san diego where you can't hit the HR's and their C's can't throw guys out you have to be aggressive on the bases.
  12. Cameron had 1 HR per 28.8 AB at home last year, 1 per 25.72 on the road Cameron had 1 HR per 25.19 AB at home in 2006, 1 per 25 away on the road Keep in mind Miller Park has a HR factor of 116 for RH batters from 2005-2007. SD had a 92 Clorado a 123, Arizona a 107, LAD a 106, SF a 84 Cincy a 127, Hou a 119, Chi a 107, STL an 81, Pitt a 72. If you wonder why we stuggled vs Pitt and STL it is because right handed power hitters really struggle in those parks. He has an advantage over last year in well over half his games.
  13. Keep in mind the Mota deal was made before all the other moves, I bet if the team knew we would trade for Torres and sign Riske and Gagne we would not have made the trade for Mota and just dumped Estrada.
  14. Against lefties I think Hardy is a great bat to have in the top of the lineup, against righties not so much.
  15. Ok to paraphrase it. They think his upside is as a #4/#5 starter and his stuff isn't all that great but his command is. I got the idea that they think he is a major league pitcher, just not with much upside.

  18. All the comments I've read about Gallardo's injury is that there is no longterm worries about it unless he comes back too fast and alters his mechanics because of it. I'm not sure I'd be happy to see him ready for his first start.
  19. BPro did their top 11 prospects for the padres. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=7162 Inman came in at number 8 as a 3 star prospect. Garrison missed the top 11 and is listed as a 2 star prospect. I hope that quote isn't too long to include but it was a long article so I think it is ok. I know a lot of people still think it was a huge mistake to trade him but it just seems like everything points at him being a Capuano/Bush type of guy and not some star. EDIT: Removed privileged content - b19

  22. I think Hardy is a better bet for 20 than Weeks myself. The guy has displayed 25 HR power since the start of the 2nd half of his rookie year. He was at a 20+ HR pace in the 2nd half of 2005, in his limited time in 2006 and of course in 2007. I think Cameron is capable of 20 HR's in miller park even with the suspension but I won't be surprised at all if he doesn't hit 20.
  23. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/gameday_recap.jsp?ymd=20060430&content_id=1426077&vkey=recap&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb I think 91 is probably tops for him but he definitely hit it sometimes in the past. If his average last year was 88.5 he almost had to have hit 91 at least a few times.
  24. Ooh that site is great DrWood. We'd have to have data from the previous year to know if anything was different though. I know back in 2006 Capuano kept saying he wishes he could get his velocity up because the highest it goes is 90-91. http://www.sportsbubbler.com/DisplayTopic.aspx?TopicID=460 That site claims he throws a 2 seam and a 4 seam. I have to admit that I still just think of them as a fastball and don't seperate the two so I never notice when a pitcher throws one type or the other. I just know people were complaining about his fastball sitting in the low 80's at the end of the season last year and well coming off of any surgery is going to make your velocity a concern, even if it is the non pitching shoulder.
  25. A lot of people said he was throwing in the low 80's instead of the mid to high 80's in the second half last season. I think that Capuano's mechanics were all messed up last year because of the injury issues. In the 12 games including the game he got hurt and the last game he started his stats were 58 IP, 46 ER, 24 BB, 58 K, 9 HR, 7.06 ERA, .901 OPS against. To me when a pitcher does something like that right after getting injured I tend to think the injury played a significant part in the problems. My guess is the groin was still bothering him when he threw out of the stretch. Not saying they should give him a free ride but he has shown enough that if he comes to spring training, is throwing at the velocity he should be and is locating his pitches I think he deserves to be in the rotation.
