  1. Neshek isn't anywhere close to as good as he pitched last year. The big problem with judging bullpens is ERA and WHIP are just terrible judges of talent over 70 IP so bullpen stats vary a lot from year to year. I still don't think we have a top 5 bullpen because all of the pitchers are on the wrong side of 30 and Riske's strong stats were luck based last year. We have tons of mediocre bullpen arms which gives us great depth but it isn't dominating.
  2. I just don't get it, they scored a bunch of unearned runs because the defense exploded, he should have had 4 IP, 0 ER and you guys are saying he stunk? I'm just baffled by that opinion. These were routine plays. If the defense made 4 errors in 2 innings with in the 1st or 2nd Villanueva would have let in runs too.
  3. The average pitcher last year in the NL had an OPS against of .743 with the bases empty and a .780 with runners on. For his career Bush is at .719 with bases empty and .820 with runners on. Right there is the basic cause of his troubles. The other problem is the 1st inning of course, he has a career OPS against of .878 in the first inning and .804 in the second inning. If he somehow makes it through that ok he is stronger than average in the 3rd-8th innings. Those two combined are why I'm not sure I like the idea of using him as a RP, seems like he really needs to start or be traded. Of course pitchers approach coming out of the bullpen differently than starting so maybe it wouldn't be a big deal, that is a tough call.
  4. Um, we made 4 errors(one was called a hit) and they got an infield hit and you are blaming Capuano?
  5. Problem with Frank Thomas is he won't score a lot of runs, he doesn't steal and I'm not confident in him putting up a good AVG. That just leaves HR/RBI which aren't all that valuable by themself. It is extremely hard for a player like that to be valuable, he almost has to hit 30 HR/100 RBI to be worth even a 9th or 10th round pick because he is hurting you in 3 stats.
  6. All Bush needs for a breakout is to be able to pitch with runners on base. I have no idea why he struggles so much with it and it probably isn't fixable but his stats themselves suggest a decent pitcher if he can pull it off. Capuano really needs another pitch, he just really struggles the 3rd time through the lineup. Vargas is actually the highest upside of the three in my opinion but he goes into nibble mode and ends up walking too many guys. When Vargas is aggressive he pitches pretty well. Probably gonna curse him by saying this but sounds like Capuano is doing ok today. Hard to tell when you cannot watch the game but they aren't just pounding him at least.
  7. Jeff Francoer will break out this year. Jeremy Hermida is a nice mid round pick, batting in the middle of an ok order. Shane Victorino is a big time sleeper, 15 HR, 40 SB upside that can be had in the 8th or 9th round. Wandy Rodriguez could break out this year, all of his stats are headed the right direction. He can be had in the last round of most drafts. Even if he doesn't break out he dominates at home so you can baby him some and get some decent stats out of him.
  8. This is one of those metrics that just makes no sense at all to me. SB don't measure speed very well to begin with and there is more to power than HR, so even at the most basic level it isn't a good stat.
  9. Counsell was actually one of the best defensive players in the game last year statistically. Maybe his stance changes will let him hit .250.
  10. There was a rumor that the Red Sox were interested in Capuano that Melvin publically denied. Capuano is gone by the end of the week!
  11. Jannsen for the Blue Jays has a torn labrum and Pettite is having arm problems. Maybe some team will come asking about one of them and make the choice for us.
  12. I wouldn't trust that it is accurate so wouldn't really worry about it.
  13. I'll never understand the strikes out too much for a leadoff hitter. If any single player in my team is going to strike out I'd think the leadoff hitter would be the one I would want to. He gets the least AB with runners on out of your good hitters and the only bad thing about a strikeout is it cannot move a runner. Now it of course hurts his AVG but the BB/HBP more than make up for it and leaves him as one of the best OBP guys on the team.
  14. I think they are going Zambrano, Lilly, Dumpster
  15. Yeah it is a smart move, the more you see a pitcher the more the advantage moves to the hitters. Zambrano generally has problems on opening day too so they have enough to worry about already.
  16. Alomar's first 2068 PA were all sub .800 OPS. He didn't break out until after that many PAs. Weeks has 1347 PAs and in fact his first 1347 PA were better than Alomar's offensively.
  17. Just keep in mind he is replacing guys who put up the line of .293/.375/.419/.794 last year. He has to be pretty good to be a major upgrade for them. Meanwhile Cameron will be replacing guys who put up a line of .261/.318/.453/.771. I like the odds of Cameron being a bigger upgrade than Fukudome once you add in the defensive shifts that happened. Yeah the OPS isn't all that much different but an OBP heavy OPS is so much more valuable than a SLG heavy one.
  18. Yes, but the team can win and the pitcher doesn't get a W even if he pitched well. The player can pitch terribly and still get a W. Over 50% of whether or not a pitcher gets a W is out of his own control, this is not a stat you want to judge a pitcher by.
  19. Those are team stats, not pitcher stats. As for linking to gameday, they are very slow to update. Bush looked good in back to back innings, back in the rotation!
  20. I still think the Cardinals will finish ahead of the Pirates. Snell is a pretty good starter but Gorzelanny is a 4 ERA arm and the backend of the rotation just doesn't excite me. The offense will still be pretty miserable. I'm not a fan of the Cardinals by any means, I like them for 5th place with more of a chance for 6th than for 4th.
  21. Pretty sure they both fall under that rule.
  22. Yes, they have to pass through revocable waivers. So if we try to send them down just one team has to claim them and we have to yank it back and leave them on the roster all year.
  23. I don't think it is a stretch at all. Through April 23rd he had 24 K and 3 BB in 17 IP, he was going after hitters with great results. Then in his next 5 starts he had 17 K, 17 BB in 27 IP and he started pitching like Doug Davis, nibbling away on the corners. Just because he stranded some runners doesn't mean he was pitching well in May, he was pretty bad.
  24. Vargas looked good last year too and then fell apart by the end of april so I'm not sure he'll earn a spot just with a good spring. It is too early to really talk about who has 'earned the spot' since these early spring training games mean virtually nothing.
  25. Vargas looked good in spring training and early april last year too. Then he started nibbling and it all fell apart for the rest of the season.
