  1. I'd have to assume Bush gets that spot and Capuano gets traded given what happened this year but its gonna be a hard thing to call. Capuano has a career long history of struggling the 3rd time through the order, Bush does not have a history of that. Capuano probably makes more sense out of the bullpen than Bush does.
  2. My guess would be the nationals were holding out for more and when the deadline came and passed they basically had no choice left. Bowden probably kept asking for too much because he figured someone else would come and make an offer and then the deadline passes and he's kind of stuck at that point.
  3. They have the best FIP in the NL which means they have the best pitching in the NL regardless of fielding, they have by far the best bullpen in the NL. Fielding has a little bit to do with it, clutch has nothing to do with it, they just have an amazing set of pitchers that nobody else in the NL can compare to.
  4. Just a week ago I watched Miller let two very easy balls fly right past him, he's a well below average C at this point.
  5. Zambrano's 3 year trends put a big smile on his face. I could see him being close to a league average starter over the length of that contract. His K's are going down, his BB's up, he's getting more hittable, more inconsistent, his GB% is getting worse and worse. He has had 2 good months in a year and half now.
  6. For what its worth only 4 C's in baseball have a lower win share to AB ratio than Estrada. Sadly Miller's defense isn't any better than Estrada's.
  7. Zambrano pitched poorly, blew through a stop sign at 3rd and got called out at home, got booed by the fans and told the media that Chicago fans only think of themselves. The fanbase at their forum is already regretting the contract given to him. That probably belongs in the silver lining thread but the fact Yost blew this game for us ruins what could have been an absolutely perfect day.
  8. The majority of studies have shown that the difference would not be significant. If he could lay off the high fastballs and low and away breaking balls his numbers would improve regardless of who is batting behind him.
  9. It's because he plays 2B. If Weeks was coming up as a 1B or 3B people wouldn't have made a huge deal about him, but a 2B that has a lot of potential is something else. He was doing great in Milwaukee in 2005 until his thumb injury. He played hurt for much of 2006 and he played hurt for much of this season(this was expected too, the wrist was supposed to bother him this year). Thats pretty much why he hasn't looked as good as expected. The 30 HR comments were mostly scouting based. There is still plenty of time for Weeks to end up being a great player, he just needs to get those wrists fully healthy.
  10. Nope they play a tie breaker game. If one team is going to win the division and the other is going to get the wild card it is decided by H2H record.
  11. Only in hindsight. Lee is not more likely to hit a double or HR than Ward was to get a hit of any kind. Sure if the runner were on 2nd I'd agree but there is no reason to put the go ahead run on 1st there.
  12. Because walking the tieing run into scoring position is incredibly foolish The odds of Lee driving in a run from 1st almost has to be smaller than the odds of fontenot driving one in from second.
  13. I am confident that the Cubs will lose that extra game and that the Cardinals won't gain ground. That just means we need to play 1 game better than the Cubs to force a playoff. Of course I was confident we'd take 2 of 3 vs the Giants and we got swept, so what do I know! Over a month long of baseball pretty much anything can happen, the Pirates can lead the league in HR's for a month as an example, the Cubs can post a .700 OPS and still have a winning record, the Royals can play .600 ball. From this point on anything can happen. Every team that is within 3 or 4 games of a playoff spot still has a good shot if they can just step it up for one month.
  14. we haven't been hitting many HR's lately, now would be a good time...
  15. When you strike out less than 5 per 9 you give up a lot of hits, when you give up a lot of hits you give up runs. That is whats up with him.
  16. Braun back to batting 3rd, I like it. Oops, didn't even notice he batted 3rd yesterday too.
  17. Braun wasn't going to keep his .380 BABIP long term anyway, he has not displayed the skills of a .300 hitter in the majors yet so I find it hard to just blame the switch for his recent struggles. The majority of his 'struggles' are simply the fact he's not hot as hell anymore. I agree I'd rather see Braun #3 because he fits the mold of a 3 hitter a bit more and he has been chasing junk out of the strike zone, but I don't think its fair to blame all of his struggles on the move.
  18. 3 BB's, 0 H, 9 IP. Rookie for the Red Sox.
  19. He has struggled in the 1st inning for his entire career, he gets stronger as the game goes on including the 3rd time through the order contrary to propular belief.
  20. I hate watching Bush in the 1st inning, grr.
  21. Leadoff BB, we gottem right where we want em.
  22. GO BREWERS! 1.5 games back makes me happy, 2.5 games back gives me a frowny face.
  23. Brewers 15-13 (82-80) Cubs 13-16 (81-81) Cards 15-16 (80-82) Brewers starting rotation has looked better as of late while the Cubs has been breaking down. Zambrano seems to struggle late in the season a lot, Lilly is wearing down since he's never been healthy a full year before and Marshall and Marquis are finally coming down to earth. Pujols is hurting, Rolen might be done for the year soon and I just can't believe the Cardinals rotation is going to hold up since its all RP's.
  24. Not true, he has 1 year with a below average OBP for a C and that year he was hurt half the season and played through it because they were in a playoff race. The average C has a .316 OBP this season in the NL. If Estrada was sitting at even a .750 OPS like Melvin expected out of him he'd be an above average C overall on the season, even with the defesne. The problem is he has not hit well since the all star break, something that can be said about a lot of players on this team.
  25. He calls a pretty normal game, his arm is poor though. This is his worst season where he was healthy and Melvin really cannot know that ahead of time. Just curious if he was sitting at a .775 OPS would everyone still hate him? He's played four full time seasons now, two of which he posted a .770+ OPS, one of which he played hurt for half the season and then this year where he has struggled offensively like half the team has. His defense is way overemphasized, going from Estrada to Miller is a very small gain in defensive efficiency. Neither one of them are strong defensive C's but neither is terrible either, they both have noodle arms at this point in their careers. The teams ERA is basically the same with both of them. Miller has a much worse PB+WP ratio than Estrada does, Estrada being average and Miller well below average. Miller has allowed more SB/G than Estrada but Estrada's CS% is criminal at just 9%, Millers is poor as well at 23%. Both of them fall in the bottom half of C's defensively, but neither would rate in the bottom 1/3 most likely.
