  1. Great point. Objectively Scooter was easily in the bottom 3rd of baseball, perhaps in the bottom 25% or 20%. I have read this forum for years and I have never seen even one person suggest he would be anywhere close to any of those players in value. I don't think anyone thought he would be even halfway as valuable as those guys. He was thought of a solid but unspectacular player that wouldn't hurt he team and would help with a positive park/platoon split. It is definitely nice having better players overall but there is nothing wrong with Scooter as a 2B against RHP in some sort of rotation at the position.
  2. Given rest at times vs lefties sure, full scale platooned I highly doubt it.
  3. Sure but this was about winning now for the Giants, not the long term. Why would you trade for an obviously compromised pitcher during a pennant race and give up valuable prospects. I was so surprised when the trade happened. It made no sense at all for the Giants.
  4. I can't imagine them platooning Thames or Shaw unless they prove they can't hit lefties to a point where it is direly needed. When you are trying to maximize wins a strict platoon makes total sense, when you are trying to maximize player value you try to avoid it. They will get every chance to prove they can hit lefties.
  5. Still why trade for someone who doesn't look right when you are giving up real value.
  6. These types of deals just confuse me. Everyone watching the Brewers before this trade knew something was wrong with Smith, he didn't look the same at all. How on earth do the Giants not realize something was wrong? It baffles the mind.
  7. Sure but when you look at say the fastest sprinter in the world there are years where they would have been beaten by someone else who just played a more profitable sport. It does take away from the event when they are only the best at it because the actual best is doing something else which means more to them. It is like US soccer, nobody gives a crap about men's soccer in the US. The potentially best 10 soccer players in the US are all playing some other sport. It just waters down the product and makes it hard to care about.
  8. I just can't get into watching something like synchronized swimming or gun shooting or lawn darts or whatever other silly events make their way into it. For men's sports at least it isn't even generally the best athletes in the world, it is the best athletes that didn't pick one of the dozens of more popular sports in the world. Since different countries compete in different numbers of events it isn't really a win or lose competition either and now that there are tons of international, regional and continental competitions even for the smaller events the Olympics have lost their impact. I just don't see them as any sort of big deal like they were pre cable/internet when the world was a much bigger place.
  9. What don't you understand? Not trying to convince you to like something you don't like, just curious what there is to understand? For the most part it is watching people compete at things that nobody cares about outside of one month every 4 years.
  10. I was pretty excited about the game and preferred the US wins. The Olympics could be cancelled for good and I wouldn't bat an eye at it though. I've never really understood the Olympics.
  11. I like the offense this year. The pitching though, not so much. Hopefully it surprises me.
  12. Garza has simply been awful this spring, I'd gladly just cut him.
  13. Fantasy guys have taken a look at it and what does end up being important is K and BB rates and velocity. So I'm encouraged that Broxton's K's are down slightly. I'm a bit worried Santana has only walked 1 time all spring. I like that Thames is taking walks.
  14. So this is somewhat unrelated but in the same theme. Is anyone else worried that Santana has exactly 1 BB all spring? His plate patience stats are simply awful and if they are a real representation of his skills there is no way he can succeed.
  15. Gonna be a debbie downer here. I only wear Wisconsin team gear. Recently we moved to another state and I decided to cheer for an AFC team near there for football. I chose the Titans even though they have been pretty bad. For Christmas this year I got a Titans shirt as a gift and I wore it the next day, my oldest son was murdered that day and I haven't been able to bring myself to wear the shirt since. I can say my one attempt at cheering for a team outside of Wisconsin was a complete failure. Though a Vintage Eric Davis Reds Jersey would be most welcome.
  16. I'd be really surprised if Garza is cut give the end to his season. With a team not expected to compete you want o maximize your assets so you have to give him a go until he fails.
  17. True but they are the least prepared players on the field too. They have thrown like 4 or 5 innings all spring. The timing of this event is simply awful though it makes total sense.
  18. If the US doesn't come back from this 2-0 deficit I don't see how they move on. This is the "easy" game of the bunch.
  19. Since we are so deep in the minors at SS I think I'd rather just see how he grows for a couple of years and if the bat never comes around just re-evaluate him when the next guy is ready.
  20. This game is getting tough to watch. If Columbia wins the game 4 to 3 which is a real possibility, the US is eliminated from contention as I believe the DR had a couple of unearned runs so they win the secondary tie breaker with 3 teams being 2-1. We need the DR to score a run or Columbia to win by 2 or the DR to hold on and win of course. Edit: Ahh I was wrong about the tie breaker rules. If Columbia wins this game the US and DR would have to play a game to see who is in. I figured the top 2 best runs allowed would pass on, not just the top 1. So if Columbia wins we have to beat Canada and then beat the DR. If the DR wins we just have to beat Canada. If DR wins and we lose to Canada I believe we lose the tie breaker and Columbia moves on.
  21. I was looking at the tie breakers and they lead to some odd scenarios. If the DR beats Columbia and we win we are obviously in. But if we lose and the tie breakers go into effect we have to lose by at least 2 to go to the next tie breaker. So if that game goes into the 9th with Canada up by 1 the best thing the USA team could do is just stand there and get struck out 3 times. Since tying the game could lead to a bigger than 1 run loss. If the US had happened to be the home team and it was 2 to 1 in the 9th once a couple guys got on the best thing the US could do is just keep walking batters until they lose by 1. Not sure I care for that.
  22. So far it has been the most compelling baseball we are likely to see until at least August. Games have been fantastic and it has been a playoff type atmosphere. I just wish the pitchers were in a bit better spot for readiness. Not much you can do about it.
  23. Dempster's last professional pitch thrown was in the 2013 World Series. Three and a half years between outings and having to face a stacked Dominican Republic lineup wasn't exactly a recipe for success. In other news, Italy scored 5 runs in the bottom of the 9th inning (without recording any outs) to walk-off with a shocking comeback over Mexico 10-9. With regards to Brewers in action, Carlos Torres pitching for Mexico in the 6th inning managed a strikeout, gave up a walk, and induced a double play groundball to end his one inning of work. In the D.R./Canada game, Jonathan Villar checked into the game at 2B for the Dominican Republic in the 9th inning (replacing Robinson Cano), but did not get an at-bat. Also of note, Gallardo started the game with pretty mixed results.
  24. Well spring is never very meaningful for wins but this year even more than most since so many players are in the WBC.
  25. My brother convinced me to play fantasy baseball this year and after doing my research I would like to raise my 71 win projection to 76. There is a bit more to this team than I initially thought. My surprise player is now Broxton who I expect to have an all star season and my bust is no longer Guerra but it is Thames who I haven't been impressed with at all this spring.
