  1. I'd actually be pretty good on an Alvarez-signing if the economics worked out right. I'd sacrifice the defense in what's sure to be a down year for a LH-bat that could play up tremendously in Miller Park.
  2. I couldn't agree more here. All you have to look at regarding the catching market is the qualifying offer handed to Matt Wieters and the early deals done for Iannetta, Flowers, Bethancourt, Ryan-Murphy etc. There is an absolute urgency when dealing for a catcher and especially so when dealing for your starter. No team in their right mind contending for a playoff spot is going to disrupt their organization and pitching staff by having to acclimate a new catcher into their system at the trade deadline. At least, without checking I would imagine it's super-rare. There's also no guarantee that there would be a suitable situation for Lucroy to be traded into AT ALL pre-trade-deadline. At least you know what you're playing with pre-season.
  3. I think some of you are taking this list too seriously. The author is up front about this being an experimental model. This is more about a statistical model/algorithm in development than actually predicting prospect outcomes.
  4. I only see a couple of target teams for Lucroy at this point. Immediately tossing out all of the central teams as I don't see it probably whatsoever that Lucroy would be dealt in the division, the Angels, White Sox, Diamondbacks, and Rangers would all see an upgrade with him behind the dish. Other teams may receive an upgrade with Lucroy but have more entrenched catchers at this point who the systems seem committed to. If you notice any I'm forgetting let me know. I don't see the Angels with the right prospects or starting pitching to obtain Lucroy, and I'm really not sure what mode the White Sox are in. The D'Backs and the Rangers seem like the best candidates to me at this moment. The Mariners seemed like an appropriate fit before they signed Iannetta. If you play along with the D'Backs or Rangers what get's it done for you? DBacks: Package involving Aaron Blair, Jake Lamb? Rangers: Package involving Gallo, Rodriguez
  5. This makes me chuckle a bit. One could argue that Will Smith has more immediate value than anyone on the Brewers. I would think Will Smith would bring three or four Vogelbachs.
  6. I know we're flush with OF'ers, but its amazing to me the Phillies didn't protect Carlos Tocci. Doesn't show much power but a very notable prospect.
  7. Wouldn't surprise me either. Smith, to me has the most value on the team when you take his contract into consideration. He could be packaged with one of those mentioned to create a hell of a package. Smith would be coveted by virtually any other team in baseball as well.
  8. Yes, I thought about this the other day. Although I don't see this happening I would be so stoked at an infield of Profar and Arcia. Lucroy certainly fits in Texas as well, and we have a strong trade history with them. I would think, however, if Lucroy was going to be dealt to the Rangers they would try to get Gallo instead.
  9. I see a lot of similarities in our situation now vs. the Cubs from a year or two ago. We need to remember the market differences, however. Our main problem as I see it playing where we do is that there are very few avenues to gaining an ace. I'm sure most of you would agree with this. The Cubs didn't have that. They knew they had the luxury to draft high-end hitting in recent drafts because they have the wallet to later sign Jon Lester (...and David Price, and whomever). They happened to strike gold on Arrieta who was never scouted to show these results but that certainly doesn't happen frequently. I just don't see how we couldn't draft Hansen or Puk at this point if they happened to fall as we also don't have the luxury to wait around for a HS-ace to develop (a la Kershaw) and we certainly can't afford to miss on the pick. Most of the initial mocks I have read show us going Robert Tyler (which I am against - delivery issues). I am usually for a BPA-approach, but missing on this pick would stun this organization for another year, and at this point there really isn't a scouted IF'er that would go in the top-10. I believe Arizona's Bobby Dalbec would be the highest scouted one at the moment. (Things are obviously going to change though)
  10. I could see Howard as being a way better bet to reclaim some greatness at Miller Park than Garza doing it there.
  11. Outside of making a small deal for someone like a Lonnie Chisenhall type or signing someone like Gordon Beckham to a cheapie deal (both of whom are defensively sound) we may as well stick with Perez who can at least field the position. I don't see how we put a playoff-caliber player at 3B now, and for a long time frankly.
  12. If you had to sign one free-agent from this list who would you endorse? http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/09/2016-mlb-free-agents.html Who do you believe would be smart to sign or is there a free-agent your eyeing for other reasons? Post yours and explain.
  13. Hoffman has buoyed into a top-20 arm already post-injury. I'm betting they would still balk at trading Hoffman unless Lucroy was included.
  14. You want to deal Gomez and Lohse/Garza to the Stros' I'm absolutely in for Derek Fisher, Michael Feliz, and Colin Moran. I'd pull the trigger immediately if it was for Garza but they both have to go IMO.
  15. I don't think Lucroy and Lohse get it done. I'm guessing the other teams in MLB are viewing Lucroy's great 2014 as a fluke at the moment.
  16. Ron Roenicke needs to go. I'll leave it there.
  17. I have booed Ron Roenicke's decision making several times in person at Miller Park.
  18. Anyone hear anything on Medeiros' stuff during this start?
  19. I actually view this as a point of strength vs. RHP.
  20. With almost 100 double-A innings in the books, if a LH reliever went down I don't think it's totally crazy that Jed Bradley could "help out" towards the end of the year. Ready or not.
  21. I am really excited about Nelson. He was great in his initial callup with The Crew and looked to me like he hit (a very understandable) wall in his first taste.
  22. The scariest thing to me about the Pirates is that I don't think we've seen what Garrett Cole can do. We're about to get 175+ innings from Cole and they were pretty good when he put up 138.0 and 117.1 respectively. Assuming health I would expect Cole to breakout in his third year. In contrast, I see the Cardinals like you see the Pirates. I think they feel something from letting a strong arm in Miller go for Heyward who I see having just another blah year. That's a net-negative to me there. At this point I am more weary of the Pirates then the Cardinals.
  23. Five Things To Be Excited About (In My Book): 1. Braun's thumb - I know we're all worried, but he seems to think he's at the very least in a better position then last season 2. Young, Controllable Pitching With Some Upside Remaining - It's difficult to appreciate in most circumstances, but it's a luxury we should all be aware of right now 3. Gilbert Lara 4. Jonathan Lucroy - Post Braun-saga, we have a player we can all look up too who is mature enough to be our team leader and face of the franchise 5. MiLB Depth and System - We're starting to climb out of the cellar with a more respectible crop of youngsters, we may be out of the bottom ten systems in MLB now
  24. If we're truly out I hope they do. The OP isn't taking into account that our minor league system, which we didn't completely gut and is showing improvement, won't bare any fruit whatsoever. We also have some contributing, young, controlled players. If we do fire-sale it opens a lot of payroll as well. So far Mark A. seems willing to give a competitive payroll.
