  1. Inflation. I just paid $15 for a Papa Murphy’s pizza that I swear cost just $10 or $11 pre-pandemic.
  2. And that extension came after a down year. At the time, I remember thinking it was the Packers who took a tremendous risk by extending an older quarterback when they still had him under contract for 2 more years (plus an an additional 2 years of team control via the franchise tag).
  3. Thanks for the input. I inquired about a refi at the start of the downturn and I think I was told there were no extra fees associated with a cash out refi, but the LTV requirements were stricter. For example, if you needed an 80% LTV to qualify for the best terms on a conventional mortgage, you’d need a 75% LTV (after the cash is taken out) to qualify for the best terms on a cash out refi. We bought our house in 2015 for $213,000 with $10,000 down. We currently owe $170,000 and our Zillow value is about $309,000. Our neighbor’s house just sold for that amount, so we have a reliable comp to support that valuation. It’d be really hard for us to get over our skis. Having never refinanced before, I’m just weighing a few strategies. At a minimum, I think we’ll refinance to a 20-year fixed and add a HELOC. Our payment on a 20-year fixed would be similar to our current payment on the original 30-year fixed loan. It’d effectively cut 4 years off the life of the loan. I don’t have any plans to use the HELOC, but it’d be nice to have as an emergency line of credit.
  4. My wife and I haven’t refinanced our mortgage during this current cycle and could potentially lower our rate by a full percentage point. I’m considering taking anywhere from $10K to $30K out as part of the refi and investing that money in equity index funds with the idea being that the long-term return on that investment will greatly exceed the 3% mortgage interest. I believe my wife and I have the financial discipline to let those funds ride for 10+ years. Aside from the obvious market risk (it’s possible my ROI doesn’t exceed 3%), am I missing any pitfalls?
  5. It shows that players can’t demand a trade or renegotiate their last mega deal with 3 years left on their contract. That may not be worth 2 or 3 first rounders, but there is some value in holding firm.
  6. The Packers just signed a street free agent WR named ‘DeAndre Thompkins’ and Packers’ Twitter has jokes. Gute: ‘Aaron, come back. I got you DeAndre Thompkins and Odell Meachem.’
  7. Apparently, ‘vaccine shopping’ is a thing and we’re all entitled. https://www.yahoo.com/news/canada-covid19-vaccines-moderna-pfizer-vaccine-shopping-173906735.html
  8. I don’t see a reason to hang on to Adams if they trade Rodgers. He’s probably worth a late first round pick now vs a 3rd or 4th if they let him leave in free agency next year. Plus they’d get some cap savings.
  9. Very few things in pro sports surprise me, but cutting a week of gym class and passing on a half million dollars? Yikes.
  10. I read a story on what Rodgers said on ESPN last night, but it’s still unclear to me what he wants.
  11. Today’s ‘Ask Vic’ column pointed out how the Packers’ history is littered with betrayal: - Curly Lambeau wanted to move the team to LA - Vince Lombardi left to coach the WFT - The Packers fired Bart Starr as HC - Mike Holmgren bolted to be HC/GM in Seattle - Favre found his way to the Vikings We’re just on the next chapter. https://www.askvic.us/
  12. I guess LeBron violated the league’s COVID protocols by attending a promotional party for a tequila brand. [sarcasm]I’m sure the commissioner will suspend him any minute now.[/sarcasm] https://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/262677/LeBron-James-Violated-COVID-19-Protocols-By-Attending-Promotional-Event
  13. Piggly Wiggly was about 50% masks today (possibly less). Down from 66% last week and 99% last month. I’m starting to feel like a bank robber when I walk into some places.
  14. Interesting. I tried to watch some of LMS and found it really hard to watch. Jokes felt forced most of the time. Must just not be my type of show I got into Last Man Standing in its 6th season because it had just started in syndication and we had a newborn at home. It was a good family comedy that had a nostalgic feel to it. I still have a season and a half of LMS on our DVR. I just haven’t been able to get into the FOX re-boot. There were some cast changes and it just feels clunkier. I hope to finish it eventually. Like most shows, it really hits its stride in Seasons 2-5.
  15. The Jaguars’ GM said the NFL made them wait on the clock for 7 minutes before taking Trevor Lawrence. So I guess the NFL really was messing with us in the name of selling more commercials (shocker). I thought it was the vanity of the owners dragging this process out (ie they want the broadcasters to talk about their team for the full allotted 10 minutes). https://www.yahoo.com/sports/jacksonville-jaguars-nfl-made-wait-draft-pick-select-clemson-trevor-lawrence-urban-meyer-trent-baalke-174239391.html
  16. I’d argue anything more than 4 teams per conference is silly, but here we are. It’s obviously about the money. This is from a league where players (and coaches) strategically plan to take losses in the name of ‘load management.’
  17. My company has been working on a ‘return to the office plan’ for months. They recently announced people are welcome to return in June without masks. Interestingly, an HR colleague told me the company was worried that OSHA might prevent them from having separate mask rules for vaccinated and un-vaccinated employees, so it would have been an either/or thing.
  18. Is baseball a revenue sport? I honestly don’t know. I’m guessing it’s similar to men’s hockey where a small number of programs are revenue neutral (revenue exceeds expenses, but doesn’t fund the athletic department like football or men’s basketball). When North Dakota dropped women’s hockey, they re-allocated the scholarships to other women’s sports and remained Title IX compliant. They consulted with a law firm specializing in Title IV issues beforehand, but were sued anyway. They successfully fought off the legal challenges, but it was costly. Most colleges should have fewer sports, not more.
  19. Oakland has already lost the Raiders and Warriors in the past two years. Amazing to think they could lose a third major franchise. I’ve been paying a 0.5% sales tax in Brown County for my entire adult life. Alameda County has roughly 6x the population of metro GB. They aren’t getting a ton of sympathy from me.
  20. I also wonder if the stimulus has helped drive the recent boom. Presumably, if a person has been fortunate to have maintained a steady income the last 15 months, the stimulus has allowed for more discretionary spending. And since opportunities to watch live sports have been limited, sports cards seem like a natural outlet for some fans.
  21. I wrote a stats paper in college about whether teams who plan on MNF were at a disadvantage come the following Sunday and concluded there was not a statistically significant difference in win-loss outcomes. The disadvantage of playing on 6 days rest (instead of 7) shouldn’t be of great concern (especially now that most teams only play on MNF once per year). But playing teams coming off a bye or TNF? That might be a different story.
  22. True. My wife and I are fully vaccinated, so our risk is sufficiently minimal. However, we have a son in day care and I’d hate to be the family that gets COVID and causes day care to shut down for two weeks. We’d be fine, but it might put 50 other families in a jam and cause the care providers to be laid off.
  23. 99%?? Mine have been 2/3 at best for quite some time. Yes, 99%. I’ve cut down on unnecessary errands over the past 14 months, but still make a weekly in-person trip to Piggly Wiggly. I live in a suburb of Green Bay (very much a ‘purple’ community), and the shoppers here have reliably been wearing masks for the past year. I was surprised by the drop off I observed yesterday. On the one hand, I’m pleased we seem to be trending in the right direction, but on the other, I’m worried some folks are letting their guard down too soon.
  24. Interesting article on ‘net rest edge’ in the NFL. Unsurprisingly, the Packers get a raw deal by playing two teams coming off their bye weeks. Overall, their net rest deficit is 5 days. Carolina enjoys the greatest net rest advantage (+12), while New England has the most punitive deficit (-15). In the age of analytics, it’s disappointing that the NFL can’t figure out how to balance out schedules better. In fact, I think they’re headed in the opposite direction by adding an extra inter-conference game to juice the TV schedule. https://www.yahoo.com/sports/why-nfl-schedule-matters-hurts-151145139.html
