  1. Thats some BS location by Ben Sheets. Howard has 43 HR. Why would he give him a fastball at the waist?
  2. Whats your budget? That will base what kind of recomendations I could give you.
  3. I think these are completely different situations as well. Our team is quite young with many players only having gone through this once. The cubs on the other hand, are an older, veteran team with many starters who have been through this time and time again. Also, I agree that it would be out of character for Ned. He is not the type of manager to yell at his players through the media (see: Lou Pinella & Ozzie Guillen). He tries to remain as balanced as possible, and I think it would be wrong to change that now.
  4. Both. Packer game on the tube, Brewer game on the PC Thank God for MLB.tv http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  5. I am bad at this But I will give it a shot See the next haiku Tom Gorzy will fail Give up a homer to Braun This game will be ours!
  6. Man, crazy hearing about all the light sleepers here. I sleep like a rock. Its a very difficult thing to wake me up.
  7. I've been to NYC 2 times now and have had a blast each time. When I was there last (Fall 06) I actually got to be on the floor of the NYSE which is about impossible to do after 9/11. This was one of the coolest things I have ever done. 1. I liked seeing the USS Intrepid. It's an old carrier that they have turned into a museum of sorts. They have lots of cool warplanes there. There is also a submarine you can tour right next to it if I am not mistaken. 2. Katz's Delicatessen. If you have seen the movie "When Harry Met Sally" this restaurant is where Sally has her famous seen. FANTASTIC food. It's not a touristy place at all and there are actually unwritten rules you have to follow if you don't want to get skimped on your sandwhich b/c they think you are a tourist. I love the pastrami on rye myself. Its in the Bronx. If you plan on going, just let me know and I can hook you up with the "rules" as I remember them. 3. If you are in the market for some upscale food, I recommend a restaurant called Esca. It is one of Mario Batali's places (the guy with red hair and a pony tail on food network). Great food, and I actually ate dinner next to Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson while we were there. 4. FAO Schwartz is always kind of fun to walk through if you want to kill some time. 5. Dont get Carver's Ice Cream (I think it's called Carvers, something like that). The concierge at our hotel said it is great ice cream, so we went. It turned out to be expensive DQ. 6. I really enjoyed Little Italy. Hop on the subway and just walk around and stop somewhere for lunch. There are tons of restaurants and its fun to jsut walk around that area. I'm sure there are other things I did that I loved, but I'm not recalling right now. If I think of them, I'll put up another post later. EDIT : oh and don't expect much from Yankee Stadium, its a dump. There is a lot of history there, so as a fan of the game you can enjoy that, but history aside, I don't have any idea why NY people would pay that much to see a game in that place. No wonder they are building a new stadium.
  8. The teams would still have practices and 6/7 games against a team with a non-elite pitcher. This is where the kids can fine-tune their skills. They can practice technique off the tee, soft-toss, etc. Then they can get a chance to face a really good pitcher to see if it all pays off. In a good sized league like that, it seems that too much emphasis was placed on one player. As far as them catching up to the pitching, I wasn't necessarily referring to that season. I am saying that maybe they'll get worked by this one kid all year. Next year, however, they (being the hitters) could grow 4 inches and gain 10 lbs and hit his pitching all over the place. Do you then stop the league because one kid is hitting too well? Yeah, he should probably be placed in a more advanced league (assuming they have one), but the fact that the kids can't hit his pitching is not a reason to punish everyone by halting league play.
  9. You don't learn to swim by watching from the shores either. Seeing as these kids are at such a developmental stage, they will catch up to the pitching eventually. Like Statman said, its an 8 team league. They could get their wacks in against the "20 MPH pitchers" for 6 games and have a chance to face an elite pitcher to test their skills the other one.
  10. If all the parents let their kids take from failure is sadness, then they are losers. Failure is something that happens to everybody and is a great way to learn.
  11. I guess the flipside of all of that is: what good will it do teaching them to quit when things are too difficult?
  12. Towards that article, thats pathetic on the part of the coach to disband the team like that. So the kid is good. Who cares? Let your guys get some experience against a really good pitcher. Maybe this kid is the next Nolan Ryan, nobody knows. I don't see this as a reason to disband. Hammytime, I go back and forth with statements like this. Yes, it is good to reward effort, but I also think that is a problem with my generation at least. I think along the way, too many have been told they are "special" and things like this. I understand that we want people to feel good, and at the 9 year old level, maybe this is a good thing, but eventually we have to teach them reality. If you stink at something and you want to be good, work harder. I love the competitive nature of our country, I think it's what makes us great. What if it is apparent that your students were giving minimal effort? Would you then tell them the same thing? I think the only time I am okay with a statement like that is if 100% effort was given. Sorry to go off topic.
  13. As of this season, you can also add Francisco Rodriguez to the list of guys that annoy me. I am sick of watching him act like he won the world series each night after he gets a save. Another one that I can think of is Geoff Blum.
  14. While I agree, and I didn't mean to imply that the type of guy that makes trouble off the field can't get along with everyone, I also can imagine how this kind of guy could get really annoying to the rest of the players who go about their lives like professionals. I would bet that many people view the entire Bengals organization differently now simply because a few trouble makers have made them all look bad. I guess my point was more of how a player like that would reflect on the organization as a whole, not just team chemistry. Baseball, unlike football, doesn't really require players playing together. The batting matchups are one on one and other than a few instances with pitchers working with catchers, cutoffs or double plays, really doesn't require much interaction between fielders. I understand this, but I think there is relevance to my example across most or all team sports. It was about how one guy who insists on getting in trouble can put the entire organization in a bad light. I certainly wouldn't want a player like that on the Brewers. Thankfully, baseball doesnn't seem to have as much of a problem with off-the-field issues as the NFL.
  15. 1. Carlos Gomez 2. Jose Reyes
  16. This really depends for me. To compare this to football, if I were in the Bengals shoes, there is no way I would have re-signed Chris Henry. The guy IS a problem. He insists on gang-banging and getting into trouble off of the field. I would take a guy with less talent over a guy who gets into trouble off the field any day of the week. The latter will do nothing buy shatter team chemistry and put the entire organization in a negative spotlight (again, see: Cincinnatti Bengals).
  17. And thusfar in his career, Braun has shown to be fairly consistent. We'll know once he gets 4+ years like Wright has, but over his first 2 years, Braun has put up superior numbers to Wright's first 2.
  18. I'm not saying Braun is better than Wright, but I AM saying that I believe Braun to be a marginally better hitter: Wright career OPS : .912 Braun career OPS : .965 Wright first 2 full season OPS : .912 Braun first 2 season OPS : .965 Obviously this season isn't over yet, so these figures could. As far as stadium, according to ESPN's rankings, Shea plays only .04 runs/game less than MP. Shea is the 23rd best hitters park vs MP being the 18th best hitters park. Sounds pretty negligable to me.
  19. I'll debate you all day on this one. After looking at the stats, I would say Braun is a marginally better hitter while Wright plays superior defense.
  20. Fukudome's August line: .155/.239/.172/.411 His July line wasn't much better. He's really been mashing the ball. I'm starting to like him more and more.
  21. Ack, Lastings Milledge doing his best Derek Lee impression right there...
  22. If only Witrado did this I would have responded by saying something like: "He probably didn't know you are allowed a CF" Bummer.
  23. My money goes on Soriano for a 2 run HR later to tie it up.
