  1. Last night was also my first game to watch.. I'm guessing @homer and I swung the tide with our viewership! ๐Ÿ˜‚ The game started out very much like last year (including almost the same players) and I was a bit dismayed. But the bench was night-and-day better than last year. I'll second (third?...eleventh?...) uh, agree that Blackwell looked exciting out there. He and Chuckie in the backcourt was fun to watch. Storr was kind of quiet last night, but had his moments. How soon until the team is ranked? I'm not stamping my ticket to the final four yet, but surely they are a top 25 team (just beating #24). Fun to beat Tony Bennett also! Man he looks just like his dad... I was having major flashbacks.
  2. I remember in the offseason seeing a ranking of transfer QBs where Mertz and Mordecai were ranked fairly close together. It disturbed me at the time as I was expecting a big upgrade. I think this season just proves the lack of quality WR/TEs we've had recently. Mertz looked really good initially, so I'm guessing the last couple years wasn't so much about his arm talent as it was the talent around him.
  3. Do I marinate that tough piece of meat or smoke it low and slow?
  4. Context was "stronger, better and more skilled" than as freshman, which he did significantly a sophomore. Can't blame Gard because he jumped to the NBA before becoming an "upperclassman" (or maybe Gard developed him too well?). Clearly JD must be included in Gard's development dossier.
  5. Anders Carlson - His FG was a bit "odd" and I've seen some comments about a bad snap. His timing was certainly not there as it looked like he kicked it with a "half-leg" What did everyone else see? Carlson vs Crosby; who is better is pointless. At Crosby's age and cost, we are better off rebooting (pun intended). Carlson's brother had a few rough years with the Vikings before settling in at a high level. For his kickoffs, I'd have to imagine the short kickoff is intentional. Yes, players can fair catch it, but they rarely do. And most of the time they've kicked it high and short, the other team doesn't make the 25. So it seems like they handle it the right way.
  6. Interesting game... The Chargers really beat themselves out there, but our offense's best game in a long time. Love: Clearly his best game and putting together back-to-back good games. Had a few high throws, but clearly out-played Herbert. His pocket presence took a step back as he seemed to be oblivious to a number of rushers out there. Something he didn't struggle with previously. Reed - Anyone lamenting the draft pick now? We need to start featuring the guy. Kind of looking like a Justin Jefferson-lite player. Wicks - Really surprising ascent for Wicks. Love to see it. Doubs/Watson - well, they catch TDs... Actually Doubs had a good overall day. Watson ran fast. Kraft - hey! Nice to see a spark for the guy. Musgrave - Continued growth for the young man. Good blocking, good routes, good receiving. I'm excited. Yosh Nijman-what happened? Who turned your feet to concrete? CBs - Our young CBs are really holding up better than I thought they could. Ballentine wasn't great, but he is what... our 6th string CB at the beginning of the season? Nixon had a strong game too. Defense - Otherwise, our best defenders were the sun and the field. A very bend, but don't break day, but they had a lot of help on "don't break".
  7. Johnny Davis says "hi". ๐Ÿ˜‰ Ironically JD could be the best NBA player Ryan or Gard ever had. Bronson Koenig was a bit of a cross-over from Ryan to Gard who kept getting better. Brad Davison kept getting better each year. Ethan Happ (except for FTs). We just don't get high ceiling players so they develop up to a certain point and then plateau. Seeing someone peak their junior year and not progress their senior year seems pretty common with our players.
  8. Yeah, i can't say much about the intent of what they are doing...., but what I saw was that one guard (the one on the opposite side of the "jump" was completely free to go to the second level. And often, a pulling player (TE, FB, G, whatever) following them in the hole. Not sure we are telegraphing our plays (hello Jim Harbaugh!) or what... but they were consistently getting the gap and it was WIDE open. I could've read and ran through that. Then it was clear they adjusted to not do these jump cuts in the second half and it was a stark difference. I don't think Berry was outcoached this time... I think he outplayed himself. We went back to "simple" and did much better.
  9. Nearly every time I eat at Bluemound, the custard is half melted. Not sure what the deal is with that one... Rarely have I had that at the others. Most the time, it has been excellent. As a college student, I rarely left anything to melt. ๐Ÿ˜‚
  10. Fair enough. Misread Joe's start date. Dusty Baker - 73 at the time. Started as a HC in 1993 when he was 43. Looks like I'm not the only one assuming Weeks is heir to the throne: https://dairylandexpress.com/2023/11/16/former-player-eventually-manage-milwaukee-brewers/ No matter what direction the team decides to go, Murphy is probably not going to manage the Milwaukee Brewers for the next decade with the title given to Weeks. He is being groomed for the job, and once the clubโ€™s leadership feels he is ready to take over, Murphy will probably be given a new title like manager-emeritus.
  11. I feel like you might've missed my first statement. Of course I'm assuming. So is everyone else on this forum since none of us are in the Brewer's FO. I'm reading between the lines. You give the HC job to someone that might deserve it, but not a high ranking candidate and then name a potential up and comer (taking the same path as CC did) as assistant HC? If Murphy wasn't part of that decision, he'd be looking over his shoulder constantly. No, 70 isn't a death sentence. But Bob Uecker sitting in a booth for half of the Brewer games is irrelevant to how many head coaches have the energy and ability to coach into their 70s. Last three WS coaches: Bruce Bochy: 68 years old. Has been a head coach since 1995. So he was about 41 when he first became a HC. Won multiple WS Joe Espada - 48 years old. Brian Snitker - 68 years old (now). Head Coach since 2016. Was 61 when he started as HC. Snitker might be the most relevant to Murphy's situation. But again... the point was more about Week's being named Assistant HC than Murphy's age. Just looks like he is keeping the seat warm to me.
  12. We struggled at 2B and 3B offensively all of last year (aside from short bursts from Turang and Monestario), Toro hits 444/524/778/1302 (in 21 PAs), and still couldn't get bigger cup of coffee. Most like a AAAA or backup utility guy, but would've been nice to see a bit more of him. For Chad Patrick, looks like a high K rate guy, but also high walks and hits/9. Not a great combo. But looks like SP depth. Maybe they see something in his repertoire to tweak?
  13. I referenced this in my wrap-up of the game Sunday (I swear someone is reading our threads and stealing the ideas. ๐Ÿ˜‚). My take is scheme. It is happening on early downs and in run formations, so if they are doing pass rush stunts... it is scheme. If this is some sort of run coverage... it is dumb and also scheme related. They are getting an OL into that hole to block the MLB, so there isn't much chance of him covering it. In the second half, they did far less of this... and not surprisingly, the run defense solidified as did the defense as a whole.
  14. Clearly, I'm only guessing what is going on behind the scenes. Most people see Murphy given the job - probably the only HC job he would've been asked for an interview. He isn't exactly a "hot commodity". People see it as a "status quo" pick or a cheap solution. I guess I'm seeing the potential for more here. No idea how long he wants to coach, but sure...he could do it to 70. I'm going to guess that only the best managers actually get to manage to 70. That doesn't seem very "average" to me. In a lesser role? Perhaps, but not in the HC role. Hopefully, he leads us to 3 WS rings and retires happy! ๐Ÿ˜„ But it also wouldn't surprise me to see him helping usher Weeks to the role - given the titles and situation. If he wasn't involved in bringing in Weeks and the title given Weeks, he can't feel very secure in his role as HC... and I doubt the working relationship would be very strong.
  15. 99.9% of these trades end up impacting either club by less than 2.0 WAR. That stat was totally made up, but probably correct. ๐Ÿ˜‰
  16. Huh... CC is actually older than I thought. I'm still avoiding that distinction, but probably not for much longer. Given Pat Murphy is 64, I'm doubting he will have a long tenure as a HC. Pat's age makes it more likely that Weeks is being groomed for that.
  17. Rod Carew and Paul Molitor were infamously bad as hitting coaches (I think Tony Gwynn too?). Often it is the people that really had to work at something to be good (or even half-way decent) are the people that make the better coaches at it. Those with oodles of natural skill often struggle relating to those that don't.
  18. As much as I like Owen, he isn't the type of player to prevent us from acquiring other players at that position. Frankly, Owen's defensive flexibility doesn't make this as much of an overlap anyway. And just like the trade for Owen Miller, this is throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks.
  19. I called it a good move from the beginning. Not that I thought that much of Dobbs, but because they gave up practically nothing to get an experienced backup at a time when they had a 5th round rookie QB starting and a UDFA rookie on the practice squad. The fact that he looked great in two games has been "splashy", but only the most clueless of Viking fans are talking about him being their future. Though to be fair, "clueless" might include a lot of Viking fans. ๐Ÿ˜‚
  20. I referenced my concern with Doubs this year in the Steeler's game thread. In his second year where most players make a jump, he has plateaued. He is no better this year than he was at the end of last year. Ok, not great. Makes some splashy catches, but is rarely there when the team needs a tough 1st down. I had hopes he was a Donald Driver type player - smart, not overly big/fast, good hands, good #2/ave #1 WR. But he has flat-lined as a #3 at best. Reed and Wicks are looking more like our go-to WRs lately. I'm really surprised by Doubs lack of impact (other than TDs).
  21. Yes. If you don't tailgate, go to Kopps. Bah... do both. ๐Ÿ˜‰
  22. Fangraph's summary makes perfect sense here: Not only was Bryson Stott blocking Dunn, but Rodolfo Castro and Kody Clemens each have a similar profile but with louder tools. Both Mendez and Moore have 2025 40-man roster timelines, so the team has two full years to develop them further before either can be considered on deck to contribute in Philly. Dunnโ€™s power gives him a bigger ceiling than Iโ€™d forecast for either Mendez or Moore, despite those two each being at least five years younger than Dunn, but if Dunn isnโ€™t going to be an everyday second baseman, he has to become a viable defender at at least one more position to play any kind of meaningful role for Milwaukee. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/brewers-add-to-2024-infield-mix-with-oliver-dunn-trade/
  23. Wait... we traded for who?? Oh OlivER Dunn.... Nevermind.
