  1. So we sign Looper for SP depth and he gets injured and sign Gagne for RP depth and he gets injured... talk about irony.
  2. I wonder where Fielder came on the list....
  3. I knew you were talking about the deferred value of money, but it doesn't work that way. It sounds like they are short on cash flow, so where would they get the $5million to invest? Granted, both of us are speculating on their financial situation, but who has $5M laying around right now?
  4. They still have to pay out the money, since its guaranteed... So it means they get him now, but have less money for the next 5 years to pay others. Sounds kind of like the NFL salary cap with signing bonuses. In reality, the bonus is paid immediately, but for the cap, its spread out over the life of the contract. So at the end of the contract, the team has less cap space to sign others and they get into a bind. Most NFL teams figured out this kills their future, so they stopped doing it (Washington and Dallas aside...). So it helps LA now, but hurts them later (thus indirectly helping the Brewers)... I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today.
  5. Teams generally have a game plan on how each of their pitchers will attack each team and most individual batters. So I would imagine that is what he is referring to...
  6. Mike Fetters gets on the team for "the stare-down" alone... http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  7. Except for the compensation... Or maybe I'm just bitter. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/mad.gif
  8. I'm surprised more teams with a 1st round protected pick didn't do this with Cabrera, Cruz, Dunn, etc...
  9. So by "BAAAAADDDD" did you mean nasty stuff (in a good way) or he sucks?
  10. Losing CC to the Yanks, who also signed Texieiieeiera (however its spelled), means we get dropped to a Supplemental + 2nd round pick. Sheets needing surgery means we lost any compensation for him + probably have to foot the bill. We did get a supplemental pick for losing Shouse to Tampa. Although, they aren't ST items to watch...
  11. Hmmmm.... according to the signing announcement, the Brewers have to put him on the 40-man roster by March 25th. But that doesn't mean he can't be sent to AAA, right? I think its almost 100% chance of a few people not making the team that are on the 40-man, but with no options left. So it shouldn't be too difficult to put him on the 40-man and send him to AAA, right? So let him be the first call-up.
  12. 1st: Even with the rotation setup now, I don't believe it will be the same come the start of the season. 2nd: We don't do so bad against Lincecum (well, so far...): G GS GF W L S CG SHO IP ERA H R ER HR BB IBB SO HBP 4 4 0 1 2 0 0 0 24 5.25 22 15 14 3 11 0 27 1 He is also better away than at home: I Split G GS GF W L S CG SHO IP ERA H R ER HR BB IBB SO HBP +-+------------+----+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+------+------+----+----+----+---+----+---+----+---+ Home 28 28 0 11 6 0 0 0 183.1 3.49 157 73 71 14 71 2 205 3 Away 30 29 0 14 4 0 2 1 190 2.84 147 69 60 9 78 4 210 5 Although, he does prefer pitching at night and does lights out in March and April: I Split G GS GF W L S CG SHO IP ERA H R ER HR BB IBB SO HBP +-+------------+----+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+------+------+----+----+----+---+----+---+----+---+ April/March 6 5 0 4 1 0 0 0 36.1 1.73 35 7 7 1 15 0 40 1
  13. Wow! He must really miss the Braves... His MiLB OPS rang was .828-.910 from 2002-05 with the Braves, then traded to the Indians and he went .766-/.773 with the Indians AAA, .628 in Fall and .603 in the MLB (over 3 years). And with McGehee, I think we are covered...
  14. JoeDirt - welcome to the board! You could go back for a few years to see the arguements for/against TGJ and some were very similar to yours. But just coming through the system side-by-side with Prince and Braun doesn't mean his numbers will magically improve from his minor league numbers. And as your account of his "good day" shows the problem. He doesn't have power. He lives off of bunts and bloop singles and that simply doesn't translate to success in the majors. RobertR above sums it up nicely. To change the subject: I'm wondering if his shoulder impingment is going to prevent TGJ from having a chance at the backup OF this year? How well would Nixon/Duffy have to prove themselves to beat out TGJ (esp if he doesn't play)? Of course, I'm still holding out hope for Edmonds signing or a trade...
  15. Anyone have any more information about what Gagne is working through? The JS wednesday report listed him along with Riske as on a throwing program and said Riske is closer to throwing to hitters than Gagne... I had no idea he was injured.
  16. Ahhh.... the REAL first sign of Spring. (even though many of my HS baseball games were played in snow...)
  17. Wow... remember that the only thing Macha has committed to with a ST rotation... It can still be changed later.
  18. Actually, the 40-man roster is full, so someone has to go. My guess is at least one of Coffey/Julio will be released (due to lack of BP spots) and if you are upgrading Tony Gwynn's spot, he has no options either. So if you give up an RP and Gwynn for a better OF, you've given up essentially nothing. Now that may not be enough to upgrade the OF, but that was my intent on the trade idea.
  19. I just don't think he'll be on the club on opening day since he can be sent down. So do most people think that. Thats what makes him a dark horse candidate...
  20. "There is a common theory in sports that it's better to hit opposite-handed in swinging sports, as it allows the dominant hand to lead the swing and the weak hand to roll through" Thats what I've been doing wrong! Too bad I'm past prospect age now... http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  21. If you look at the overall picture of who we lost and who we gained and compare that to all other teams, a C is about correct. However, if you consider we expected to lose CC and most likely Sheets, and have a limited budget, I would say Melvin gets a B. We will see how things pan out, but he really did fill a lot of gaps in the last couple weeks without spending a lot of money. The Cameron deal looks worse now, but at the beginning of the offseason it was more understandable. (BTW, if you take away everyone's hot streaks, they are all .200 hitters - except Bob Ueker, he becomes a .100 hitter). My personal feeling is that he isn't done yet, also... We can't keep all of those RPs, so someone will be trade bait.
  22. Given his previous history, I would think this would take some a MiLB contract with MLB incentives if he is called up. Prob more than Gagne's.
  23. Edmonds would be an idea pickup, but I'm guessing salary would preclude us from doing this. Anyone similar with a smaller salary we could pick up in a trade? There has to be a team out there with a deep OF and can't keep them all (as our BP is currently) and needs an RP.
  24. So has Seattle claimed him yet? Seriously, anyone heard any rumors about what will happen? I haven't heard of anyone claiming him, and I'm guessing a trade won't happen, but will the Brewers take him back if he clears waivers? I'm hoping he comes back....
  25. I'm really surprised at how high Dillard's PECOTA numbers are... He is my dark horse candidate to make the pen this year.
