  1. Saladino is probably the safest to remain. He is versatile, good defender, and hitting well. Is he though? Good defender or hitting well? He hasn't looked like he is a near-Arcia-level defender to me. Also he hit well at first. But he has come down to earth. Last 50 at bats, he is OPS .659 and trending down from there.
  2. I would be willing to bet that no team would pick up Kratz. Don't know whether he would go back to the minors or retire though. I don't know Christian Bethancourt's defense. But his numbers look okay as the emergency 3rd catcher in the system if Kratz were DFA'd. I think I saw that he was in the PCL all star game. I assume the Brewers probably have to make a decision about keeping Bethancourt also (whether 25 or 40).
  3. Fade from the race = out of wildcard playoffs by 3+ games. Then, yes, that is absolutely a free pass. In fact, better than a free pass. That is put another plus in the column for Stearns. That means he correctly determined the talent of the team was not close enough yet. Now if we miss the playoffs by a game again, that would not be good.
  4. Whatever number equates to "put Jeffress in instead". That's my level of confidence in Knebel tonight also. When he has been off too long it seems he gets rustier than the usual bullpen guy.
  5. I don't even understand his existence on the roster so I'm probably not a good judge of why he is starting the first game out of the break. Maybe the just want to make sure he really does suck and don't want to wait until later in the week for that determination. I pray that is the answer. As no other answer makes CC look very smart.
  6. They were good moves, but acquiring players in the winter is like hitting home runs in the third inning. They're good but not decisive. He has yet to show in back to back years that he can finish the job and get the man he wants in the 9th inning with the season on the line. And there's that releasing Scooter Gennett move too. Say what you want about Doug Melvin, but when he set his sights on the playoffs, he got his man. Twice in fact. Do Homer's in the 3rd count for less than the 8th or 9th? Also, as someone else pointed out...I prefer the full season value of a player. I'd rather have the home runs in the 3rd versus the 8th. That way you are playing with the lead and actually use Hader and Jeffress.
  7. I don't see anything with the Mets being easy, even if it is in their best intrrest. We made the Walker deal last year at the deadline with the Mets. So there's some history there. The Mets probably know our farm system pretty well, which might help expedite any talks. I guess. I assume Sandy Alderson will allow whoever is replacing him to put together a Cabrera trade he can approve.
  8. I don't see anything with the Mets being easy, even if it is in their best intrrest.
  9. The Phillies will get three more games out of Machado and the Dodgers two versus the Brewers and their front loaded schedule. Three games is 4.5% of their remaining games. Which is quite a bit of value difference imo.
  10. You might as well kick in the Biloxi roster if you are going to trade those three for a rental. Yours isn't in blue, so mine isn't either. I'm not following. He said get it done WITHOUT Burnes, Peralta and Hiura, meaning those three are not in play for a rental. Which makes very good sense. Sorry misread. Went to delete and you had already replied.
  11. If the Brewers can get it done without Burnes, Peralta, and Hiura I will predict them. I don’t think Stearns has panicked in the last couple days and I believe he wants that big splash if the price isn’t crazy. You might as well kick in the Biloxi roster if you are going to trade those three for a rental. Yours isn't in blue, so mine isn't either.
  12. The only pitchers on the 40 man available would be Woodruff and Diplan. Wilkerson hasn't been down 10 days. Woodruff has been on a long rest in CS. But we should basically have everyone available to pitch except Houser. They could send Houser down for a bench player.
  13. Melvin never really did this much. There is the cost for each player for a month (est $100,000 extra), so if you are adding 5-6 players it starts adding up. Also, I think a factor was the risk the player gets hurt and then he is getting paid and earning service time. Wasn't it last year that they wanted CS to have players for the playoffs? Seems like we only called up Taylor Williams and later Wilkerson. Seems like we could have added another guy or two - so maybe Stearns thinks the same way as Melvin.
  14. I agree, I thought he had a fine season last year. But it seemed Counsell didn't trust him as much as the other relievers - so I assume he vote to Stearns was not to resign.
  15. I don't think Stearns is irreplacable. But you are criticizing him for things I disagree with. . Aguilar hadn't shown this type of power and average to date. I don't know how much is Counsell, but I don't think anybody was too shocked that Braun and Thames received time at 1B, until Aguilar got his chance. If anything, I think Stearns should be credited in seeing that Aguilar needed to be kept on the 25 man roster and not traded just to clear a spot because we had too many 1B. Saying he hasn't shored up the starting pitching, when our staff has generally been pretty good and 75% of the free agents that were highly touted have been pretty bad - is a stretch. Chacin has been one of the very best signings of the offseason. I don't know if you will see a trade for a starting pitcher now either, as our staff is pretty decent (have to figure get down to two of Peralta/Miley/Suter and Davies truly healthy), so why trade for a guy that isn't a real upgrade? And there are not any real upgrades available (Mets) (Happ and Archer have not been good lately).
  16. Because Peralta has been up for only a month, and didn't exactly light it up in his last start. Davies had been in the rotation all season in 2016 when he was sent down. I personally thought it was brilliant sending him down in 2016. Ditto on counts. My question. Is Peralta actually going to Appleton? Is a player that has been optioned to minors, but they don't plan on using him there - can he be in the major league dugout? What restrictions do they have on who can be in the dugout?
  17. Well I guess we only have the getting swept scenario. I do think that will effect the Brewers from spending tons of prospect capital, when we are only competing for the one game wildcard playoff. I do think w make moves, just maybe not big ones.
  18. And if Hauser needed to be pulled after looking poor in the 5th inning, instead of now? Who pitches then? It just pushes more guys into the fire. ... Yeah but you have guys you don't care are in the fire, Houser and Asher. That was why they we're brought up. they can go multiple innings and who cares if you leave them in for a shelling (if it gets to that point). And if we actually score enough to be close you can use the relievers that are better.
  19. Sure it does. Maybe Hauser successfully eats an inning or two. Maybe he doesn't. At some point, shuffling in your last men in the bullpen catches up with you... and you end up losing close games like last night. Do you think Counsell wants Lopez in the game in a situation last night's? Of course not.... but he had no choice. The focus is, and should be, on both the rest of the series and the rest of the season. These guys are eating a TON of innings. I'm sure getting as much as they can out of Miley or whomever was the goal tonight. Houser was always going to pitch tonight. Miley was coming off shorter rehab starts. The only variable was if Houser came in the fourth, fifth or sixth inning.
  20. I agree with all of this... The bullpen is starting to crack because they’re exhausted. I’m sure the value in the dugout is placed on SP innings at the expense of one AB. Exactly, particularly with the top of the order coming up. I disagree with all the above. You have Houser in there he should've been starting the top of the fifth inning. They should've pinch-hit for Miley with nobody out in the fourth inning, it isn't like we have many scoring opportunities. They got purely lucky that Miley didn't give up any runs in the fifth. You piggyback Houser on Miley's game, and then you ship him down to Aaa after the game is over and replace him with another arm. Doesn't affect the bullpen overusage at all.
  21. Why is Miley even starting the inning? Arghhh. I get he didn't let any runs, but the top of the order and counsell was letting him pitch?
  22. Why are they not replacing Miley with a real batter here with nobody out and the top of the order behind? I cant figure that out? Any help? Real batter = whoever on bench
  23. Saladino not showing that he is that great defensively so far imo.
  24. I do like the idea of pulling Miller or Thames for defensive purposes late in a game, especially if it coincides with them just having batted and won't be up to bat. If Machado is at that level of defense, will Counsell feel he can't pull Machado if we are up by 2 going into the 9th? If that is the case, all the more reason to get the MN guy(s).
