  1. Not all trades are for short term players and not all trades are for negligible production increases. But way to assume what I may be referring to. So here is a little icon back for you. That makes my argument that much stronger. What if it is June, we are in it and both Segura and Bianchi are injured or are just not producing. Are you going to stay status quo or find a player available and trade for them. And yes, I would do that CC Sabathia trade all over again if you guarantee me that type of production.
  2. I wouldn't trade both Schafer and Maldanado. I would go Maldanado and a Bucci or Bradley (or someone along those lines that the Brewers and Mets could agree upon). I would entertain an extension for Dickey, bumping the 2013 salary and tacking on a 2014 year - lets say $16M. If he wanted more, I would just let it ride and qualify offer if he is worth $14M. I wouldn't then go out and sign another pitcher, as this is my signing. Gallardo Dickey Estrada Fiers Peralta Rogers Narveson With Thornburg, Hellwig, Stinson as possible backups. Then if we are in it, we have the funds and prospects available for a trade as needed.
  3. I don't know that I would call it falling off the cliff, but I always fear he could revert to his flailing at everything way low and outside like the end of the 2008 season. That said, if he is willing to take a discount, I would see about bumping his 2013 pay and tacking on two more years as someone else posted.
  4. We have had the Livans and Dillards as the last man in the pen. No matter how bad Rogers looks in spring training, he would have that spot as I wouldn't risk losing him. Can Narveson pitch in spring games and then go on a rehab assignment without fudging an injury? Just curious. I would definitely be looking for a free agent on a 1 or 2 year deal. I think anyone good enough to get more years is going to get a ton of money. The teams are flush with TV money and it will be spent. If the team is still in it in July and needs help, they will have the money and prospects to acquire the help.
  5. IIRC, Riske had no injury history and had 4-5 decent to very good years in the bullpen for Cleveland/KC. Sign me up to sign that type of bullpen guy this offseason. You can't shy away because of one injury one guy had.
  6. How did the Brewers get this guy if so many MLB GMs were so hot after him? Was there a claim order and he fell to them (which would imply Gammons tweet was BS) or did the Brewers pay him a little bit more than anyone else as some sort of free agent.
  7. What is the scenario where the old team can't sign their "ex"-players until May/June?
  8. http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/8543736/drew-storen-washington-nationals-arbitration-players Milwaukee catcher Jonathan Lucroy missed by three days, costing him $2 million. If had been arbitration-eligible, his contract called for his 2013 salary to escalate from $750,000 to $1.9 million, for his 2014 and 2015 pay to rise by $300,000 a year and for 2016 to go up by $250,000. Others eligible this winter in the so-called Super 2s group are .......Milwaukee closer John Axford;.....
  9. Am I the only one that hates the idea of Aoki playing CF? We better get Segura and Weeks on a running program if that is the case, as they will be expected to pick up all the short fly balls as Aoki plays on the warning track (half blue).
  10. http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/8516175/livan-hernandez-yorvit-torrealba-milwaukee-brewers-players-become-free-agents
  11. If he is 2yr/$25M and the Red Sox would be willing to part with him and not expect a big haul, then yes I would get behind that trade. He looks like he had an off year in 2012 but is only 29 in 2013. Two years would be the most I would want to go, so that would work out.
  12. I am going to guess more for Narveson and Loe and less for Axford. I was hoping the brewerfan.net salaries page was correct and Estrada wasn't arby yet.
  13. Yes, some young arms may be two years away, but that doesn't mean I want to trade young talent for two expensive seasons of a pitcher who will then leave in FA. The Brewers don't need to sign a FA to a long contract precisely due to what you outlined, and none of the posts you quoted said they should do so. I wasn't talking about trading for anyone. Since Melvin feels the need to acquire a veteran starter, I would hope it would be a shorter FA deal versus a trade. And yes, the posts I quoted were all saying they want to acquire someone for more than a two-year deal. Which usually means to me that you are using resources that you wouldn't have to. If a pitcher is getting a four year deal, he must be pretty decent - so you are either trading away pieces or paying a premium if a free agent. Why use resources that way? Sign Dempster to a two year deal and he could transition to the pen the second year if that is in the best interest of the team.
  14. If the Brewers are trading away young talent for pitching, they need to get far far away from trading for these two-year stopgaps. If Melvin wants to trade for pitching, he needs to do his due diligence & make a move for a player the Brewers will control for four seasons or more. Shields is a good pitcher, but so was Marcum. Now he's gone, & Melvin is back to square one. Time to move on from that short-term vision. Why? Two years would be about perfect. That will give the Brewers time to sort out the young pitchers and get settled into the starting lineup. You don't think the Brewers can find 4 starters out of Estrada, Fiers, Peralta, Rogers, Thornburg, Hellweg, Burgos, Nelson, Jungmann, Pena etc (and don't forget Narveson) by 2015? Obviously these pitchers are going to be cheaper than the 3rd and 4th year of whatever FA you are going to sign for that long.
  15. Who said I would take out the better starter based on money? I just said why acquire a pitcher that is signed for more than two years to begin with. I think it may be a faulty assumption that all of those young pitchers would pitch as well coming out of the pen as if they were starting. Yes, we should be able to trade excess pitching, but if that pitching ends up in the bullpen working the 6th innning, what kind of value do you think we will get? You don't have to worry about that if you keep flexibility.
  16. If the Brewers bring in a FA, I don't think youth will be the biggest factor. They may look for a Dempster type that would only be looking for a shorter deal. Why sign a guy for a longer deal and potentially block other min wage pitchers the Brewers are developing?. What happens if more than 3 of: Estrada, Fiers, Rogers, Peralta, Thornburg, Hellweg, Burgos should be in a MLB starting rotation, but are blocked by a FA signing? That would seem to be paying more to get similar results plus wasting an asset(s) by shuffling them to the bullpen or keeping them AAA.
  17. Boy are you contradicting yourself. In the post right above this you talk about being worried to an injury to your starter even after a good 3 year run and now in this post you want to extend Gallardo to even more years than the three we already control.
  18. We obviously aren't going to give him away, as he is good and cheap. But if we can get someone of value that is going to have more of an impact on the team than a catcher that plays 30% of the time, than I am all for it. We can probably squeeze another year out of Torrealba. Just can't trade Maldonado to the Pirates - it is too fun running on them.
  19. I would think that is the endgame, as the Brewers would be losing money in credit card fees (a lot more than whatever interest they make) by taking the transactions for NLDS tickets, etc and then refunding the money a few weeks later.
  20. I'd be interested to see this link or where this came from?
  21. Of course there is. My advice, don't switch to a job in the accounting field.
  22. Thanks for the info.
  23. They will have to have Rogers on the 25 man or lose him, so the pen is the default if he doesn't do well in the spring. The Brewers will want to keep at least one of the young guys who doesn't make the MLB starting staff in AAA stretched out as the injury replacement.
  24. Does a minor leaguer on the 40 man roster get paid more than if he isn't on it? Yes, of course the level he's playing at also matters... AAA vs AA and so on. Thanks. Another question then. If the min wage for 25 man roster is $480K, is there a min wage for the 40 man roster?
