That was me TLB. I'm not ready to call that his ceiling. He maybe can be a starter. In my opinion Minor > Cain Beachy = Jeffress Kawakami < Parra All in all, I think when you consider the need for starting pitching, we have to make this deal. No that it's even being talked about though...
While I agree to the end of your reasoning, I am not sure we can turn that down. Two probably good young starters that are either 2/3's or 3/4's for six years as well as a year of a guy that could be a good fill-in starter for a year trumps a possible starting CF for six years, a closer type reliever, and a high upside lefty that hasn't yet figured it out for three years. Doug would have to pull the trigger on that prospective trade.
I was thinking that may be an option if we ate all of Kawakami's salary. Maybe we throw them Parra, who they may have some interest in. That three for three trade would really be nice.
If you want to trade Jeffress, don't do it for Beachy. I would think Cain and Jeffress would get Minor for certain. But Jeffress should only be dealt in a deal for a Greinke/Garza type that is more MLB proven. Like I said, the Braves would probably accept Cain and Jeffress for Minor. ETA: I wonder how bad Atlanta wants to shed Kawakami's salary? At a time when we are arguing over the lesser of the two evils of Blanton and Pavano, is Kawakami really much worse than those two when you consider we could maybe get Beachy as a throw in? I'll pay all of Kawakami to get a trade of Kawakami/Beachy for Gomez over trading for Blanton or signing Pavano eight days out of the week.
I agree that's how it probably went down Pingman. From those two counter offers, which ever side offers the much better sweetener (us adding to the deal including Gomez or the Braves adding to a Cain deal involving Beachy) gets it done. More than likely, both teams have passed on this type of deal altogether and we'll just have to wait and see which side regrets not making a deal work more.
Wondering aloud whether people would prefer Blanton for two years at the full 17 million or Pavano for two years at 20 million. Let's also figure what we have to give up to get Blanton is roughly the exact equal of what you value the second round pick we'd have to give up for Pavano to be. Just thinking it could create an interesting discussion...
I am not sure the Phils will have to eat any salary, certainly not anything significant. If there are four or so suiters out there that will give Pavano ten million a year, there will be a couple that will give Blanton 8.5 million a year. I am guessing said team won't have to trade a good prospect for him though.
Doesn't anyone else remember when C.C. was a free agent and the last two teams standing were the Yankees and the Brewers? The "expert analysts" at ESPN were discounting the Brewers long before he actually signed for the Yankees because the "players union wouldn't allow him to leave that much money on the table" - as if they had the power to prevent him from taking whichever deal he preferred. Where are those "experts" now? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif I believe one of the two LA teams basically matched our offer, and I am not sure it ever got out whether he'd prefer LA to Milwaukee. But I am guessing he'd have preferred LA.
That group was a combined 61-42 last year. I would think if you're rotation is 19 games over .500 that it's playoff caliber. Obviously not in the same class as Giants or Phils but certainly competitive with the rest of the league. Now all we need is to sign Looper as a "sixth" starter and our record gets even better!
Plus the fact that I am positive Melvin will be done adding to his starting rotation after adding Marcum and Blanton, save resigning Cappy to compete with Narveson for the fifth spot.
Welcome to Milwaukee, Scott Blanton! I am kidding, but seriously I see no way Doug doesn't get a Blanton trade done. And I'm not really excited about it.......more Pavano-ish about it.
Well, he'd fit as a four if that's really what we are looking for. I'd rather work harder to find a two, but I guess it would solve mediocre off-season goal of landing a two and a four.
If we traded McGehee for Buehrle, that's probably not quite enough our way. I'd probably want Vicieno too. I suppose I'd do a year of Buehrle, two comp picks, and Viciedo for McGehee though. Gamel and Viciedo could coneivably man the infield corners for us starting in 2012, with Gamel most likely getting third base in 2011 as well. ETA: we could probably throw in a spare part to make it a two for two deal. Either a spare reliever or a 10-15 type prospect.
I realize they have huge pocket books. Remember when they wanted Cameron but only if we gave them some salary relief though? I think needing to shell out quite a bit more than planned for Lee might make them want to ship Burnett. Not saying they need to, but I am sure it's not their goal to have as high of a payroll as possible. They still will likely want to shed some if they have to pay more to Lee than planned.
That Beachy offer could well come and go. Atlanta obviously wants something better in center field. I am sure they'll do a stop gap move at some point, which will probably be enough to have them take the offer off the table even if it's not a long term solution.
I'd rather look into AJ Burnett is the Yankees get Lee. As Lee appears that he's going to cost the Yankees much more than they thought, I gotta think they may look to dump Burnett.
What type of ceiling or maybe the better question is what number starter would Shields probably be? I haven't followed him much, but wasn't he their one a couple of seasons ago but now has "regressed" to a 3/4. If that twitter report is correct, I almost hope Doug pulls the trigger on Shields. Not even sure what he's offering, but apparently it's something he feels comfortable giving up, so I highly doubt it would be a fleecing in TB's favor.
Yeah, I more wanted his bat for our bench. Like I said, I wish he could play some corner outfield. He then could maybe sub enough at three positions and pinch hit to be worth going after for something like 2/4M.
Maybe the question becomes, how much money are Jeffress, Rodgers, and Cain worth to us. If the answer is 20 million, we probably should look into Pavano. If the answer is closer to ten million, then maybe we should be willing to ship them for Garza.
The other good thing about Garza vs. Greinke is affordability for resigning. Greinke probably gets 125-175 million when he becomes a free agent. Garza is probably going to get less than 100 million on his free agent contract. Thus, we can afford to keep Garza forever whereas we are not that likely to have Greinke for more than these next two years.
What type of a deal do you guys see Overbay gettiing and do you think he'll land a starting job. I see him possibly as a great value signing for somebody. I am trying to figure out a reason for us to sign him but I just can't see him getting enough at bats. I wish he could handle some corner outfield in addition to first base.
