  1. So....I believe the dominoes for a Burnett salary dump are setting in. Cliff Lee was offered six years and 140 million and now Petitte says he's leaning toward returning based upon the following link. http://twitter.com/KenDav.../status/7173225112932352 Burnett I believe will be shipped out after these two guys join the 2011 Yanks...
  2. So Minnesota last year had thought Pavano was smart to keep for seven million over a year and thought Washburn was smart to add for for a year at five million a year. And Minnesota is supposed to be shrewd at handling their money, being competitive, and have a strong rotation............................... My point is that, if you take into consideration the fact that I doubt we can be a playoff team next year, why not just add Washburn for one year to fill the four spot rather than pay a guy Wolf's contract to fill that spot. If we get lucky and things go right for us, we buy a pitcher for the second half.
  3. I doubt we compete for the playoffs next year, so I'd rather fill the fourth spot in the rotation with a guy like Washburn for one year than sign a Pavano/Correija for something like 3/30. That savings will be needed and we might have some homegrown starters ready for the entire 2012 season. As an aside, I believe the Twins offered Washburn five million to start for them last year but he turned it down. What did Pavano get from Minnesota last year? I bring this up because A) lots of people like the idea of us adding Pavano and B) lots of people think the Twins are smart about their starting pitching decisions.
  4. Back on topic a bit more though, I guess my question is if you'd trade for Burnett if he's more or less a salary dump. I realize it'd maybe be better to get Greinke or Floyd or Garza via a trade, but what if we just aren't able to obtain one of those types via a trade? Is this a move you'd gamble on, would you overpay a Pavano and say a De La Rosa? Do we just punt for this year? Where would obtaining Burnett in a salary dump (if its possible) rate in your hierarchy of ideas to improve our 2011 starting pitching?
  5. I think Greinke would take KC's pick of our best FOUR prospects to obtain him. If you'd do, say, Lawrie, Rogers, Jeffress. and Odorizzi for him, I believe that's what it would take.
  6. Well, we'd have to throw in something. I am guessing they'd maybe want Narveson in case Peavey is still hurt. We win in a Fielder for Floyd deal. That would far exceed my expectations as to what Melvin can/will get us for Prince. I started a thread a little over a year ago advocating a JJ Hardy to Baltimore for Jeremy Guthrie trade. I see Baltimore as a great fit for Prince too. I wonder if Guthrie and a top pitching prospect that's around a half year to a full year away would do the trick. I don't expect people to be thrilled with this type of deal but maybe this is realistic?
  7. I guess if you give him Wolf's contract and between the two of them, one pitches like a three and one pitches like a five at least for the duration of their deals, I can handle this move. I agree that we'd still need to obtain somebody at Yo's level somehow.
  8. Just wondering if this would interest anybody. I saw someone mention this on the MLBTR board. If the Yanks sign Lee, they almost have to dump Burnett. Joba would be sort of a sweetener in a deal. Would you take Burnett and Joba for say Todd Coffey and Carlos Villanueva? I believe Burnett is "only" owed around 45 million. I am not sure we can do much better, and this way we can hang onto all of our assets and use potentially use them to upgrade elsewhere. Is this a buy low move that you'd be interested in?
  9. I feel extremely strongly that five years will be closer to accurate than the two years someone wanted. It won't be less than four, but five seems very possible. Kuroda will get three years guaranteed too, I think.
  10. I don't think it's the money of ESPN that we would be luring Valentine away from. It's the stress free life. Being a manager is a lot more stressful than sitting in a studio giving your 2 cents so to draw Valentine back into the trenches it's going to take some serious money.I agree with this part. It's like for you or I, if you can make 75K sitting on your couch, would you take a job when you are in your fifties or sixties that pays you 150K where you have to sit in an office 45 hours a week and/or travel? Many would not.
  11. I'd be extremely interested in a Brandon Belt and Zach Wheeler for Fielder trade.
  12. I agree we can hold onto Fielder until the deadline and maybe end up getting more for him. I am thinking we can have him until July and still be able to get a Daniel Hudson and like a AA type guy. Not Daniel Hudson obviously, but somebody like him that falls out of favor a bit with his team due to struggles the first half of the season.
  13. Wedding rings don't count. He has a ring as manager of the '01 D-Backs, and that's it. Rings don't plug holes...and this team has enough holes where the manager won't matter a hillabeans.
  14. Riske was a good signing that didn't pan out. Most here liked the signing at the time. We really needed good bullpen help and there was nothing in AAA. He was excellent in Kansas City.
  15. I should have worded it better, but I meant for Hardy and not for Edmonds. I think this obtaining Dickerson is excellent value for Edmonds. But I'd like to know what #5 starter type Melvin turned down for JJ only to accept Gomez. Again, I bet it was someone better than the 16 million we are paying Wolf and Davis for this year. And it is funny, as RealGenius stated, that we got better value for a a month and a half of Edmonds than we did for two years of JJ. Sad.
  16. Absolutely agree. I just would really like to know what pitchers Melvin turned down for him that were "no better than a 5th starter type". I guess I think they'd be better options than the 16 million we are paying Wolf and Davis to be 5th starters, but that's just my opinion.
  17. OK, let me rephrase and be more blunt. Dickerson is definitely the older player, but he might be a better player than Cain. And still cheap and controllable for a long time.
  18. I'd actually be interested to see how Cain and Dickerson compare. Both going into the 2009 season were ranked in the 8-15 range as far as each organization's prospects. Neither was to be a certain star, but both seemed to be on the way to possibly nailing down a starting position in the majors. People that are brushing Dickerson aside might want to look deeper at how he compares to Cain, despite being a couple years older. Judging by what appears to be Red fans comments in the mlbtr thread, Dickerson's best position is CF. The fact he can play all three positions though makes me hope Cain claims CF to himself and Dickerson becomes a cheap and useful bench guy as a 4/5 outfielder.
  19. Paul, I agree with this statement, but I think there are a host of people here that don't see Davis as somebody we'd be taking a "chance" on. I think a lot of people here are very confident Davis will pan out. If you see him just as 50/50 at making it in the majors, I agree we should target a pitcher 50/50 on making it. But I think a lot of people see him as more of a sure thing to pan out in the majors.
  20. Sanchez for Hart is ok if it happens. I'd have tried setting the trade up with different players as I mention above. Both players are probably playing above their heads this year. But both players have a lot of talent and may have figured it out this year. Seems fair, but like others mentioned, why not go for a younger more controllable centerpiece than Sanchez. Still, this trade in a one for one is a wash to me. Not excited or disappointed. Could pay off for us though (if it happens).
  21. Not sure what fair value would be there Bling. Depends how much they are willing to deal Delcarmen. Are they willing to "sell low" or is he simply the chip they are hoping can get the better end of a seller. But he'd be really good in our bullpen for the next couple of seasons. I'd definitely offer your offer though, if Edmonds and Hoffman were ok with playing in Boston.
  22. I would love to get DelCarmen from Boston in some type of a smaller deal with Boston. We have lefties in the 'pen, but they are all starters and all of Davis/Parra/Narveson might be gone next year one way or another. It'd be nice to get DelCarmen and I thought I read he was somewhat available or being dangled.
  23. Sadly, Shelmark, it's probably due to attendance and the Hell's Bells song being a hit. Or Mark Attanasio likes his baseball cards more than any of his other Brewer cards.
  24. Out of leftfield, would Dunn and extras for Fielder make sense? We put Dunn at 1B and can realistically resign him, plus whatever extra we'd get?
