  1. Nobody is saying it's easy to do this way. It'd be better not to have 25 million of dead money. But take this past season. Let's say Sheets resigned with us and was healthy and an ace this past year and thus we didn't have the Looper money. And also that the bottom part of our rotation pitched better. You're likely looking at a 90 win team. So, yes, we definitely can screw up our payroll a bit and still find ourselves in the playoffs. I don't advise screwing up with our payroll deciscions though.
  2. We are eating Hall's contract and I expect us to basically eat Suppan's contract by simply making him an afterthought as a long reliever. That totals over 20 million in 2010. That's a lot of money we are essentially eating. Add in Riske's as well and the point is that we can make about 25 million worth of a mistake and still be competitive. If we sign Prince and something goes bad, however, all our other money must not be "dead money" and we must hit enough on our outside free agent signings.
  3. Well, I am reading this thread from a year ago and seeing that people only want to give up our garbage (Suppan/Hall) or a minimal prospect for him. Also, no talk of him as a 2/3 but mostly talk of him as a backend guy. Not sure why you'd communicate that "very little changes in a year", End. Clearly, "a very lot has changed in a year" with regard to Vazquez's value. Heck, I think it was Buster Olney that had him second in the Cy Young this year. Nate - my point is basically that for 2/3 of the season (until injury possibly greatly effected him) Washburn's productivity was pretty equal to Vazquez even though they get it done different ways. His productivity before being dealt certainly was that of a #2. Does that mean I think it'd be smart to offer him a ton and ink him in as our #2 starter? No. My point is that it's possible he could be that productive based on how his effectiveness in a mediocre sample for Seattle was last year.
  4. Nate - you can read comments as well as me. Before this past season, Vazquez was perceived as being a guy in the mold of a Bill Hall and Jeff Suppan value wise. Slightly better, but by and large he had close to neutral value, regardless of how his "stuff" might be better than the lefties I mention. The funny thing to me is knowing how much differently you'd be talking about Washburn had he pitched for Detroit how he was pitching for Seattle. You'd probably be calling for him as a 2/3 as opposed to a 5. The point, again, is that a lot can change in a year, that we're going to have to gamble somewhat, and there is certainly a similar chance that Washburn can fill the #2 spot in the rotation just like Vazquez came out of nowhere to be able to fill it for the Braves this past season (even if he regresses his final year of his contract).
  5. I'd prefer him to Burns or Suppan fwiw. I am guessing he's used as either a AAA starter unless we run into tons of injuries in camp, or as a long reliever out of the pen.
  6. Thought this thread would be nice to bring back up. I get tired of reading about every single pitcher being "another Suppan". Here's a guy we could have gotten last season that, as you can tell by most comments on the first page, nobody wanted too badly and some wanted nothing to do with. Point is, guys like Washburn/Vazquez/Davis etc. have been good in the past and have been at least #2's before. It certainly could happen again for any one of them, just like it did for Vazquez and Randy Wolf out of nowhere this past year.
  7. I'd be fine with Johnson cutting into Corey's playing time some in RF, and he'd also be a nice utility guy to have (and bat for the bench) should Counsell and Lopez leave.
  8. I saw Kelly Johnson was a non-tender candidate. I wonder if we'd be willing to deal them Weeks and Suppan for Johnson and Lowe. Johnson could be a stopgap at second base until Lawrie arrives.
  9. I'd personally rather trade Weeks than Gamel if the perceived value is similar. Probably only because I like Lopez more than most and also I have high hopes for Lawrie as soon as 2011.
  10. Yep, I doubt we get him. Pavano we might though. I almost get the feeling we actually might get Prince signed and the plan then is going to be to get starters that are good but quite old that we'd only have to sign for like two years. With that in mind, I get the feeling we are going to wait for the starting pitching that should be at AA next year and would rather avoid a longterm, expensive contract with any free agent.
  11. Saw this on mlbtraderumors via ESPN insider. Apparently he's a 16 year old and MLB has to verify his age for the deal to go through. Does anybody have any info on the kid?
  12. Great line Rydogg. I like this move. If disaster strikes, he beats Burns imho.
  13. I mentioned simply swapping Parra straight up for Morrow in a change of scenery deal. I agree with you though. He's the only other pitcher I want from last year in the rotation other than Gallardo if we can pull it off.
  14. This trade is not going to happen with us giving up prospects. Unless the Braves eat 60% of the deal, we could maybe send them two B prospects. They won't be getting any prime prospects for Lowe though.
  15. FYI from the thread on the 3 team rumor at mlbtraderumors.com, Jason Churchill at www.prospectinsider.com posts... 5. By: Jason A. Churchill on 11-19-2009 12:12:35 Hearing the third team has changed since talks started, or that there may be more than one scenario that could involved one of multiple other clubs. One of them is Tampa.
  16. If you're on target RyDogg, then you simply pass on getting involved in this trade and I'd hope we're not the third team.
  17. Do we only control Jackson for two years then? I'd hate to give up anything more than Gamel for just two for-sure years of Jackson. In my view, we'd already be doing both a buy-high and a sell-low in this proposed 1-for-1-for-1 deal. That is rarely ever good. I'd almost rather waste money on starting pitching in the free agent market than give up MORE than Gamel for two years of Jackson.
  18. Any thoughts that Weeks could be involved, thereby allowing us the chance to keep Lopez? I thought I read of Weeks being the only name mentioned in rumors with JackZ last spring. Other than that, to get both, I'd start with Gamel, Salome, and one of our stud A ball pitching prospects to bring Morrow and Jackson to Milwaukee. ETA - another option would be including Parra in a deal for Morrow in somewhat of a change of scenery type move. We give up Gamel and Parra to get Jackson and Morrow. Not sure how I'd feel about that, although the initial change of scenery reaction from me at least would be quite positive.
  19. I was thinking Eric Munson was picked up in a similar fashion more recently, I believe in the past year or two. But Rivera won the backup job.
  20. There is just no way that this signing can light a candle to our Tom Lampkin acquisition or even when we brought aboard Jesse Levis around ten years ago.
  21. To me, this is pretty much confirmation that we'll be going cheap at catcher this season between some combination of Kottaras, Rivera, Lucroy, Salome, (and maybe even Corporan as the first catcher up to keep the time clock off of the other two if that's how it works out).
  22. Not sure. My response is sort of inferring the same type of question to Doug... "Doug, you really wouldn't make a trade that helps you most because it's with a team in your division?" I am not really sure what the thought process is of any given GM, much less the two in this case.
  23. Not sure why Harang or Arroyo are mentioned so much. My guess is that the Reds aren't happy that Doug wouldn't trade JJ in the division, so I'd expect them to now be unwilling to deal either pitcher into the division.
  24. Agreed with the above. I am basically bypassing all of the Davis negativity posts. I'm confident that I personally and probably most all brewer fans will be happy with what he does for us if signed.
  25. I'd definitely offer Vargas arbitration in spite of there being no compensation for losing him.
